Progress... (Kimberly)

last night I wore my favorite pair of capris.  Really cute, with elaborate stitching on them.  Adorable, and $40….so you know it was worth it when I bought them.  Where are they now?  In the garbage can.  They literaly fell down around my ankles while I was doing the dishes.  Sad to see them go, but I couldn’t be happier about the reason!

  1. Ah Kimberly! So cool…the garbage though? You know, there may be someone here that might be able to get use out of them. We used to (and probably should) share clothing that was too big.
    How exciting for you though!!

All about me (well not all) (Katherine)

I should have written to ya’ll long ago. So sorry gang. So here I am to share a bit of the low down on silly-ole-me.

I am totally from the south! Born in the south and lived in the south all my life. Now My people back home would tell you that I don’t live in the south really, not any more. But I am sorry to hurt any feelins or anythang but the part of the Carolinas we live in is with out a doubt The South!!

As a child we lived on a farm. All total about 500 acres. My Parents divorced and after my dad remarried he moved to Louisiana. I graduated from high school early (G.E.D) and went to stay with him for a little while.  I went to  Cosmetology school and graduated from that at 17 and started a career. While I was in school I worked to pay my expenses and I kept that job also. I worked 2 jobs all the time. I had a friend that owned a house keeping business and needed help so I started working with her also. Plus I got a job as a waitress. Let’s just say I worked ALL the time. One of my best friends, also my roomate at the time, introduced me to my awesomely handsome husband.  He was a millitary man. We came here 20 years ago. This is the only duty station we have had with one exception. A 2 year tour in another southern state, then right back here.

My husband has a son from a relationship befor we met. We have 6 children together. His son Josh has only lived with us once , recently for about 7 months, and he has moved on.  We have loved him and prayed for him since the day he was born and in our heart he is one of our children just like the rest. So we always say we have 7 kids.

For the most part since we came here I have been a stay-at-home mom. We have homeschooled our kids from the very start. Our oldest son, at home, graduated from high school last year. He entered the dual-enrollment progrom when he was 16 so he had two years of collage credits when he graduated from high school. He is a totaly awesome guy! He and the next one down, also a son, have chosen not to date. Not for now anyway. This is not easy for the girls that know them because they are ridiculously handsome!

I said for the most part I stayed home. For a few years befor he retired my husbands job was a shift work position. 4-on 4-off kind of thing and one set on was days the next nights. During this time I started helping my neighdor, who was a friend. She was a pastry chef and needed an assistant. Cooking is just in me and I’m pretty good at learning that kind of stuff really fast. She tought me most everything she knew. After she left I was given the job she had and worked there until I got pregnant with my last baby.

Now I help our church with the food ministry. School my little punkins and work myself half-to-death in the process. I am a total work-a-holic. I have had a hypo-thyroid isue for many years. My weight gain is not due to pregnancy. I get VERY sick during that time and weigh less when I birth than before I got pregnant.  The most I have weighed was 220. I got down to 178 once but for the past 2 years maintained at 182-186. Sometimes I would go up 4-6 or down 4-6. Then around Oct. of last year I started gaining a pound at a time til I was back to 194. That’s when I said enough with this. And here I am. I started with you all on this walk at 194. This week I am down to 179.5.

I’m so glad to be here with ya’ll. I’m a total computer freak. I never get on and I never check my e-mail. Sad but true. (A couple times a week I do get on and read the post here.) So please forgive me but I’ll try to do better.

Oh, by the way. Blest is my dear old pal! I knew her before she blogged. I have been the “blessed” recipient of her kindness. I have eaten her food, slept in her house and held her sweet babies in my arms. What a lucky girl am I!!!!! Blessed I would say!!!!

  2. Well hi Katherine (or are you Kellie in disguise?)
Pleased to meet you. The cooking sounds fun but hectic, How many people for Easter Breakfast? Does your family miss out when you are cooking for others or are you training them to be good cooks too. I mean the sort that will get on with the meals when you aren’t available. Or do they only want to make the fun stuff, cakes, easter nests (that’s my daughter HP’s thing this Easter)etc, etc. Actually though that is a good way to start as long as it doesn’t stay there. I am glad to have 3 daughters who enjoy cooking and cook for me often. Well HP is coming on now as she has to cook for herself at uni so is learning fast.

It's Raining SPUNKs (Bird)

After a SPUNK-less three weeks of Southbeach, I got SIX unique SPUNKs today at work! Even the token “tough guy” at work said, “Man, are you losing weight?” I said, “Yeah, I’ve dropped 16 1/2 pounds.” He said, “Dude, I can tell!”

This is awesome!

New Feature! (Blest)

Per Bird’s request, I undertook the extremely daunting task of having our site fitted with a new feature.  (actually, I just asked my brother. I think I said please -but maybe I didn’t…)  If you look to the right, you will see a link called “Recent Comments“.  Clicking on this will take you to an interesting page which gives you the top fifty most recent comments, grouped by post.  The most recent comment on the most recent post is what you will see first.

This is kinda cool, because it helps you stay on top of ongoing conversations on posts that aren’t on top anymore!  Check it out, see what you think!

Busy two weeks... (Christy)

I just wanted to let ya’ll know that we are leaving tonight to head up to a major Navy Hospital so that my husband can have laser eye surgery tomorrow.  It’s not Lasik, it’s supposed to be safer, but very painful for about three days.  We’ll be up there until Friday.

Then we’ll come home, do laundry, and on Sunday take off for househunting in Mississippi for the week.  So I’ll probably be offline, unless the various Navy Lodges we’ll be staying in have computers!

Send me some strong will vibes for making good choices at all the restaurants we’ll be eating in over the next two weeks!  And prayers for my husband’s surgery and the househunting would be appreciated (we’ll be buying our new house and have to get it settled before dh deploys in June).

OK well no change as of today, but let me tell you there were lots of changes last week. With my thyroid I was up 5 lbs then lost 3 and finally over the weekend the last 2. So even though it is no change from last week, I will take it happily. The picture will be coming shortly blest!

  3. Hooray for April! It really feels like spring here.

    200/170.8/160

Down 2.4lb. And I weighed myself on Friday morning as a check to see if I lost or gained over the weekend and I went down 0.8lb. So that’s good. The weekend went well, though I’m quite tired.

Ooh, and I sent blest my progress pic.

  4. 220/182.2/175
Down 3.6. I think thats good but suspect it might creep up a bit again. I have been ill this week. I have just spent 3 days when I didn’t get out of my PJ’s with a flu type virus. The only exercise I have had is coughing (my ribs ache)and filling in crosswords which i have been doing to keep my brain exercised. I did eat although can’t say I have had much appetite. So it suprises me I am down so much although earlier in the week before I got ill I did seem to be on track.

Anyway now have to concentrate on getting well, I am still very weak and wobbly and so taking life quite easy. I am on holiday from school which seems a little unfair that I should be ill. I missed the last day but that hardly mattered much from a teaching point of view. I just lost the sorting out time I would have had on that last day. And I missed church which feels awful.

Anyway this is just a comment and it is getting very long. Look forward to hearing how everyone else is doing.

  5. Oh Elly! I agree! It seems unfair to be sick while on school holidays! I’m on Spring Break this week too!

  6. 210/169.8/135 - I’m down 1 this week. I was down 2 most of the week but my husband and I started taking a supplement called Creatine to help build our muscles. It is common to carry about 3-5 extra lbs of water weight when you are on it (probably since you are supposed to drink about 1-2 GALLONS of water a day on the stuff). About 6 years ago we were doing Body for Life and were taking all sorts of supplements. We are just starting the supplements again. The only other things we are using are protein shakes (for after a workout) and L-glutamine to help muscle repair.

Down 0! I’m stuck in these 190’s!! Driving me nuts!! But, I plan on upping my exercise this week. I joined the gym and plan on making the most of the money spent on it!! Hitting the cardio section as soon as my babysitter (husband) gets off work today! And I’ll be joining in on two spin classes a week. I’m really looking forward to that.

  28. Actually not doing too bad here……I’m 36 weeks pregnant on Thursday, and am at 224. Considering that this time last year I was at 227 or so, then dropped down to 199 by middle of August, I’ve gained about 25 pounds this pregnancy.

Hard to believe that in just a few short months I’ll be watching what I’m eating more closely again and hoping to see the numbers on the scale go down rather than up! But I’ll definitely be counting on all of you to help me break a few bad habits that I’ve gotten into. :-)

    Hey Sisters & Brother(s?)
Oh my goodness what a week.——- On to another crazy weekend this week. We’ll have a huge breakfast for Easter at church Sunday after sunrise service. We’ll be doing food for about 300 people. That’s a full breakfast, not just a little snack. Last week I did our first Seder(Pass Over) meal. I did sit-down full service food for 130 people. Lots of fun x LOTS!!!! of work. Everything was made from scratch. From the chicken broth for matzo ball soup to desert, matzo cake meal brownies. I’m looking forword to a lesser busy time!!! I think I worked a little to hard and had a pinched muscle/nerve in my back. I could hardly move my head for 2 days. Still a little tender but much better.
Great jod to everyone this week. So much fun to be in this walk with ya’ll.

  36. Man am I running in here to post my weigh in. Just got home. The kids are finally over the sickness however they are SUPER fussy. Just brewed myself some majorly strong java for this nasty “kids won’t stop crying” headache. No change this week for me. Still at 185. I am bummed but not about the lack of change. Bummed about the horrible decisions I have made in regards to food choices for the last week and a half.
I will make better choices starting now.

  3. well thats great for your son. You must be so proud. I always enjoy basking in reflected glory from one of my offspring. Sounds as if he has real talent.

Couch-to-5K, countdown: 1 week! (Anne)

That’s right, ladies (and Bird)! The couch-to-5k challenge officially starts in one week. If you missed my first post, you can find it here — and if you want to look at the program again, you can find it here. So far I know that Blair, Missy and Bethany are going to be joining me in the fun, and I wanted to remind everyone that we’re starting in a week in case you want to come along for the ride! It’s a program for people who’re starting at being able to walk 30 min, 3 times a week so don’t be intimidated by the whole “5k” thing.

Let’s do it!

  3. I am resting this week in anticipation…

Just kidding! I plan on doing a lot of stretching exercises and taking the dog for longer walks this week to get ready.

  4. You know, there is actually a “Couch to 5K” podcast for free on iTunes. It features music, with someone speaking over it to tell you when to slow down and speed up. I think I might just join y’all!
