Hi Ho Hi Ho to camping we shall go (Tami)

Yeppers.  I’m out of here…momentarily.  We are heading out bright and early tomorrow.  I am excited (and a bit anxious with a 1 and 2 yr old and 2 dogs) about getting out of Dodge.  I LOVE the great outdoors and have missed it over the last 3 years with the pregnancies and births of little ones.  I have been very conscience about what we shall eat.  Ya know, I really think it is going to be easy to eat healthily while camping.  I am forgoing smores this year for all of us.  We’ll have 1 next year after the weight is gone.  I have spent the last 2 days cooking food to take along.  Things that I can throw in a pot to reheat.

It looks like it will be a beautiful first weekend of summer here in East TN.  I’ll be back Sunday night and will check in Monday morning.  Have a wonderful weekend.

NOT a Spunk. (Blest)

Okay… so I was out at WalMart last night on an emergency “the gate for the kitchen broke” run…  I was in a cute little flowered chambray sundress (brand new with-tags-on Liz Claiborne gotten from Goodwill!) and kicky white sandals.  I had on earrings.  My hair looked good.  Very little make-up… but enough not to look pale.

I get to the cashier - who was probably all of 22 -and she’s all “Wow - you’re perky!”  and I said “Oh yes. I’m OUT of the house! I have four boys…”

And she says “Oh. Are they teenagers?”

!!!!!!!!!!

For pete’s sake! Do I look old enough to have teenagers?!!

So if any of you were thinking I needed to be taken down a peg….well consider it done.  Phooey.

ps - here’s my new haircut…

newhaircut.jpg

so don’t think I look that old.  So maybe the taking down didn’t work after all…

  1. Of course…now that I think about it. I actually am old enough to have teenagers. If I had started anywhere between 15 and 22 having kids - I would have at least one teen by now. Whoa.

    Okay….now I feel old.

    Comment by blestwithsons — June 20, 2007 @ 8:27 am

  2. Blest you look great.

Age is a funny thing though. You don’t feel any different to when you were 16 or at least not much - a bit older and wiser. And yet in my case I am old enough to be a grandma. Thank goodness I am not yet but I am old enough! When I was 16 anything over 30 was ancient but when you get to these ages you thought were old you discover you feel just the same.

So don’t worry about how old you look( or indeed are) just be yourself. And enjoy that new person you have dicovered that was there all along just hidden under the extra pounds.

    Comment by Elly — June 20, 2007 @ 8:42 am

  3. No! You do not look old enough to have teenagers! People are sooooo oblivious sometimes. I was in Walmart a couple months ago with a girl friend, and a man asked if I was the babies GRANDMA!!!!!!! I am 28 years old for crying out loud! What is it with Walmart???

    Comment by Nikki — June 20, 2007 @ 9:02 am

  4. I love the hair
I get comments about ‘Mummy’ when I’m out with kids I’m looking after. Fair enough if it’s the babies, cos for all people know I could be their Mum, but when it’s the 8 or 9 year olds I think ‘just how young do you think I got pregnant? There’s no way I could be his\her Mum!’

    Comment by Debs — June 20, 2007 @ 9:58 am

  5. Well. As a mother of a teenager, I don’t understand the problem. Just what are you saying anyway? LOL!

You look real cute. Cute hair, nice tan, rockin’ earrings.

  6. Oh I don’t have a tan…that’s just bad lighting!

  7. Don’t worry, it’s Walmart! I’ve had FOUR grandma comments over the past 3 years since I had my youngest, and every one of them was at Walmart!

Though I am old enough to be a grandma, if I’d started my family at 19…

You don’t look old at all :-) . Just consider the source, as a dear friend said to me when I was appalled at the grandma comments!

  8. That teen was clueless…you look young and cute :-)

  9. Hair looks great! As for not looking old enough to be a Grandma…ya never know these days! My mom was 37 when my nephew was born! Ya…my sister started SUPER young. My grandmother turns 60 this year and the oldest grandchild is 25 and oldest great grandchild is 5. Hence she was 35 when she became a grandma and 55 when she became a great grandmother.

    Comment by Tami — June 20, 2007 @ 2:05 pm

  10. Okay, so when I was 13 and my brother was 7 I was asked if I was his mother. I think people are just dumb!! I may have looked older than 13, but I had braces, I was skinny, skinny, bony, 13 year old skinny, and had a Walkman on, chewing bubble gum. Yup. People are dumb.

Anyway, I went to my ten year class reunion last weekend, and do you know what I think? I think everyone looked better older. Way better. So, maybe it was a compliment! :D

    Comment by Bethany — June 20, 2007 @ 2:46 pm

  11. Not that you look old, cause you don’t! You look young and spry and peppy! :D

  13. Cool beads and snazzy ‘do. ;-)

    Comment by Bird — June 20, 2007 @ 3:35 pm

  14. Most of the time people think I am a lot younger than I really am (which is 31). I got “carded” at the movie theater this weekend. HAHA Now, I KNOW I look older than 17! After she looked at my driver’s license she said, “Wow. Ok.” But, a few years ago when I was in my mid twenties a woman that I was at a training class with asked me how old I was. I asked her how old she thought I looked. She said, “Well I know you’re probably a little younger than I am.” I asked how old she was and she said, “37″. I was so upset. I asked my friends if I looked that old. Of course they all said no.

So, I wouldn’t worry about it. People are just clueless sometimes. My boss is about your age and she interviewed someone once and asked the applicant how she felt about relocation. The lady said, “I don’t think I’d want to do that. Are you a grandmother? Because if so, I am sure you understand how important spending time with the grandkids is.” Needless to say, she didn’t get the job!

    Comment by Gina — June 20, 2007 @ 3:38 pm

  15. I never guess people’s ages because I’m generally wrong and it’s so easy to offend people. I blame it on never having looked my age myself. I was always tall for my age and so looked older than I was. Now, I’ve no idea. Occasionally someone asks who’s older, Debs or me. (Me, by 2 1/2 years). That’s always nice! And I did get ID-ed in a pub last summer. And I was the oldest person in the group of friends I was with. Crazy.

    Comment by Bekki — June 21, 2007 @ 6:57 am

  16. Was she a teenager? Maybe she thought getting away from four teenage boys would make you perky, cause she knows what teenage boys are like! :P

    Comment by Bethany — June 21, 2007 @ 1:19 pm

  17. When I was a teenager I had no idea about age gradations. Over 20 = old, is what I thought.

Maybe she was picking up on your being wise beyond your years. :-)

Check-in & tiny SPUNK! (Anne)

Ladies (and Bird),

I apologize that I have been MIA recently…. there has been a lot going on here in the Midwest and in my life. A few exciting things to note:

  • I officially weighed 134.0 this morning — which is 10.4 pounds down! I have been through the wringer and back over the last year, stress-wise, and to be 10.4 pounds down and not up is a testament to God’s grace and all of your support and encouragement — THANK YOU!!
  • I did 2.0 miles yesterday in 25 minutes and 34 seconds — that’s 1.75 miles of running and 0.25 of walking. This is possibly some of the farthest that I’ve ever run. Learning to do something that I’ve always told myself that I “couldn’t” do, and beginning to conquer it is an amazing, empowering thing and is all of God. If there’s something in your life that you’ve always said that you can’t do, I challenge you to engage God in conversation and try it out! I think I might actually be ready in time for the 5k at the end July ;-)
  • I wore shorts last night, on a “date,” and was confident in them! Not a SPUNK per se, but close enough for me!

On top of all that, I am currently planning a cross-country move (my first “grown-up” move with real movers instead of me, my dad and a U-haul) while also trying to spend the next 9-10 weeks living life to the full here in Chicago spending time with friends, seeing all the nooks and crannies of the city, and oh… also trying to get as much research done as is humanly possible since the lab set-up on the other end in California may leave me with some down time.

So, I promise that I am here. And I’ll continue to comment when I have a free moment. But I may be fairly MIA with regards to posting until mid-September when I am settled and in Cali. If someone wants to take up the weekly (ish) exercise check-in postings, I would love that — I don’t want to see that dropped with my absence — because I know that it’s been the exercise that has kept me sane the last few months.

  3. Anne, WOW! You are winning the bull-fight it seems, but it doesn’t make the fight any easier! I hope the cross-country move is as incredible for you as mine has been for me. I hear Cali is great place to run :)

I would love to jump in and post weekly for the C25K for a time, if that’s okay? I am hoping it will keep me as motivated as it did you, and I need a focus to post on more frequently here. I don’t think my progress will be as motivational as yours, but who knows?

I hope we hear from you more than not. You are an incredible encourager. I’ll be praying for your journey, sister!

Tailspin (CJ)

On Friday I got up and found I’d lost two pounds after being stuck in one spot for a while.

On Saturday I got up and finished a 5K without re-spraining my ankle.

But over the weekend an old problem reared its head in my life again. Instead of responding with prayer and trust in God’s sovereignty, I responded by eating ice cream. The ice cream solution is as effective as ever — which is to say not at all.

So this is just me checking in, to say (a) God is in charge and I am not, and (b) He is bigger than this trial, and (c) I am getting back on track with food today. I am feeling a little discouraged, though.

  1. CJ — it’s only Wednesday, which means that you’ve only been “tailspinning” for 3-4 days. How long would the “old” you have let yourself spin before making a change? Probably a lot longer — so be proud of yourself and praising God that you are back on track now instead of 3-4 weeks from now — congrats!!

  3. CJ, well done - you’ve recognised where things were going wrong and tried to change them. God is in control, and you can do this. Forget about the weekend, it’s gone and you can’t change it. Just say it’s a new day, and things are gonna go well. And of course we’re all thinking and praying for you and sending loads of big hugs :-)

You know you've changed when . . . (Blest)

A spoonful of natural peanut butter is an incredibly yummy treat…

You binge eat…on brussels sprouts.

You get excited over leftover edamame for breakfast.

You chortle gleefully in the Wal Mart check out line as you put your new - and heavier - hand weights on the check out.

You lick a tiny drop of maple syrup off your finger while making muffins and find yourself reeling from the unaccustomed sweetness. (gaaaah)

What else?

  1. And let me tell you, standing in the sport section of WalMart, wearing a dress, pumping iron while listening to your iPod is one sure way to get funny looks.

But I wanted to make sure my elbows could deal with the new weight. They’ve been a little cranky…

  3. Blest–funnily enough, I just bought smaller weights! I had a five-pounder that I got for Nick that I started using. I was beginning to feel a bit to bulky in the biceps instead of toned. I got a 1.5 and 3 lb to use for a while and see what happens, doing more reps.

For me, I know I am changed when I choose a cup of yogurt with granola for breakfast instead of hashbrowns. Never would have thought it ;)

Also when a summer treat is sucking on a cup of frozen grapes instead of eating an ice cream sandwich.

Biggest Loser fans (Lady Laura)

I saw an article about The Biggest Loser in the same Time magazine that had the pictures of people-around-the-world’s groceries. I have only seen the show a couple of times so I don’t know much about it, but this was surprising to me.

Things like dehydrating themselves so they weighed less, and other manipulations of the scale. I guess the pressure to win that cash and stay on the show can encourage people to do really stupid things. Not something you see in the show’s advertising. :) movies hardcore teenhome movie pornhorse clips moviemovies hot pussymovie xxx gallery hotteen japanese moviesglamour movies latexmy clit lickMap

  1. To “weigh” in on this…

    1. The article states that “contestants often drop more than 20 lbs. in a week.” Now, I only have watched 1.5 seasons of this show, but to drop 20 pounds in a week was rare. Maybe in the first week, or maybe if you were Erik (last season’s winner who started > 400 pounds), but definitely not often.

    2. If I was going up to try to win $250k a week from now, would I eat sugar-free Jello and asparagus for a week? Heck, yeah… for longer than that, no way. Wouldn’t you?

    3. I don’t think they can manipulate the scale with dehydration every single time… the last time, maybe. But again, see point #2.

    4. The season 2 winner and runner-up (the couple that got married) did a cameo on season 3 to talk about maintaining and what it’s like. Granted, all we got to see was what the producers deemed important, but still… they both were 10-15 pounds over their final weight but still looked great.

    5. I think the shock value of this show is that you can take a person like Erik, who was over 400 pounds, and he can actually learn to work out, eat healthy and lose weight — I think the inspiration of that for most Americans is so worthwhile.

All that being said, the Time magazine article seemed very bent on showing that it didn’t work or something like that… It’s an amazing show, and I’m excited to watch it again in the fall! :)

And thanks, Laura, for posting this… it was interesting to read and fun to respond about ;-)

    Comment by Anne — June 19, 2007 @ 12:30 pm

  2. I love this show and find it much more inspiring than stuff like Extreme Makeover. I know that the losses while on the ranch are completely unrealistic for me (and should be for anyone in the real world!) - but the 6 months at home for the finalists always amaze me. They take what they learn, start living their normal lives and keep it up - usually averaging about a 2 pound/week loss. The eliminated folks usually do just as well. This encourages me that it can be done if I can learn what to do and do it.

The part that helps me the most is that the girls don’t come away with all the lose skin I expect and have seen with women I know who have had gastric-bypass. I’ve always been afraid that effective weight-loss would end that way for me, too. They’ve shown me that exercise can really make the difference (as well as Blest’s admonishments!).

I have kept up with Matt & Suzy from season 2 (they got married last September) and they still look great and continue to inspire people.

  3. I’m glad ya’ll commented! As I haven’t followed the show, I didn’t know if the Time piece was accurate or not. As both of you said, the show is probably inspiring to a lot of people or it wouldn’t be so popular. :)

Not the direction I want to be going in but I can’t say I’m surprised.

I fell off the wagon earlier in the week and I let the wagon run over me this weekend. :) Stress was my excuse! Well, this week is going to be another stressful week at work, but I won’t let it get me…not this time!

I also re-injured my knee, so even though I worked out 6 days, I took it easy and tried not to push too hard. This morning my knee was feeling better, so hopefully I’ll continue to see improvements.

  19. Ok, this is a little bit confusing, but here goes.

    I am at 263.4
That is down 2.4 from last Monday’s weigh in.
    But up 1.2 from last Tuesday’s weigh-in.

I think that my body has been a bit screwy with fluids lately, and I know I had some salty stuff over the weekend (I let myself have some nibbles at a Golden Wedding Anniversary party which was for a couple in my church).
Sooooo, I’m gonna take it as a loss (cos that way I feel happier and more motivated to do better this week ;-) )
It’s not perfect, but it’s still better than what it could be.

Well done everyone. Most people seem to have a loss this week. Christina you just jump right on that wagon (or better still walk alongside it - more exercise that way!) and concentrate on making this a good week. Last week is gone, and never coming back, but this week is gonna be great!
Oh, and stick in there Jana, Laura and Brandi.

  23. 220/178.4/175
oops up again (2.6)not quite as much as I was down last week (2.8)
Actually I think it was that same weekend party that did for me but really don’t feel too bad about it. It was a great occasion celebrating a golden wedding and the food was yummy. I should have stuck to water but the non alcoholic punch was rather good. A bit down on the exercise as well last week only managed 1 swim.

On the plus size lots of compliments in my new dress. And some male friends brave enough to coment on my weight loss. I think it must really show. I realised I haven’t been this slim for at least 10 years so current church folk, work colleagues etc have never seen me like this.
    I like it.

  24. Ack! 216/190/145

I have no idea what I weighed last week. I think it was 189, but I’m too lazy to look it up! Argh! I’ve been terrible!! But, I’m heading to the gym tonight and my week is looking relatively calm compared to last week (VBS, doctors appointments, gifted testing for my daughter, step kids moving in, throwing a big ole Father’s Day party….kinda crazy!)I have big plans for losing weight this week. I’m sooooooo ready!

Congrats to all you LOSERS! Ya’ll are doing awesome! What a great weigh in week…er, except for me….:(

  25. Ok, this is really annoying!!!! I have been using other peoples scales because I didn’t have one. By the ones I used I had lost nearly 4 lbs this week. 185/181/160 But my hubby got me a scale today while he was out and ahhhhhhhhhhhh it says 185!!! I’m super annoyed. Now I know next week I’m going to be disappointed because I was shooting for the 170s by next Monday. Very frustrating! But on the plus side (people who use that saying must never have been a plus size) I hit the treadmill for 40min today and feel great.

  26. Way to go everyone! Nikki, I had the same thing happen last year when I got a Tanita scale that measures body fat…it is consistently two pounds higher. It’s an adjustment at first, but you’ll get used to it next week when you’ll be down again!
    My numbers…
    216/212.6/150

That’s down 2.2, I think from last week. Still aiming to be back to my lowest OWOA weight of 209 by the end of June, but hopefully next Monday!

  27. I’m a day late, a dollar short…

    249.2 - down .4 this week. It’s a loss. I’ll take it.

CJ, I never officially “signed on” but I have been trying hard to stick to this challenge this week. Thanks a bunch for the motivation!

I often have the recipe below for breakfast when my thyroid is sluggish, and was pleased to discover that just one serving has 5 servings of vegatables! If you like asian food - you’ll love this (I got it from the South Beach cookbook and made a few mods).

Tofu scramble (1 servimg):

1 tsp olive oil
1 tblsp garlic, chopped
1 cup onions, diced
1 cup bell peppers, diced
1 cup extra firm tofu, cubed
1 cup mushrooms, sliced
1 tsp Bragg Liquid Amino (EXCELLENT soy sauce substitute)

In small skillet, saute garlic, onions and bell peppers in olive oil until aromatic. Add mushrooms, cooking just until they begin to release liquid. Add tofu and stir fry for a few minutes. Add liquid amino and heat through.

cal:334, fat:16.4g, chol:0, sodium:247mg, carbs:29.4g, fiber:5.5g, sugars:11.7g, protein:30.7g, Vit A:58%, Vit C:312%, Calcium:46%, Iron:27%

Going well! Surprisingly, I naturally eat at least five servings of veggies a day and drink close to a gallon of water. I have gotten the exercise going now (5 times this week!) and snacking is greatly diminished, but not gone

Thanks for the challenge!

Mind Over Matter? (Missy)

After reading about Blest’s version of CJ’s cookies, I decided to bake some yesterday.  I had all the ingredients plus 2 bananas too ripe to eat raw, but not too ripe to toss.

The kids always say, “Yuck!” when I present them with a healthy version of their faves.  But after reading Lady Laura’s mention of mindless eating, I decided that maybe the kids should help me make them so I could explain the ingedients and why I used them.

I announced we’re baking cookies, and you know they are game.  Hands are washed, aprons donned, and we begin.

“Mom, where’s the eggs?”

“Mom, aren’t cha gonna put some sugar in there?”

I explained why those were out and what goes in their place.  I even let them feel the difference between regular white flour and wheat and told why one was healthier than the other.  I explained how the bananas sweeten the dough and make it stick together.  They tasted each ingredient (even the baking soda - yuck!) before it went in.  They decided we should put in both the cinnamon and the vanilla and chose walnuts instead of pecans.  Finally, they pressed one chocolate morsel on top of each cookie.

The two littlest pulled up a stool and sat about a foot from the oven and counted to 720 (approximately 12 minutes :) ) and giggled.

“These are going to be the best cookies ever!”

I moved the cookies to a cooling rack as the kids began to count to 600 for the cookies to cool.

We finally tried one.  I bit into mine and loved it, but thought, “Uh-oh, they won’t like this, it’s not sweet enough!”

Then I heard, “Mmmmm!  These ARE the best cookies ever!”

  1. This is great! Think it would work on my husband? Can’t you picture this whole experiance with a grown man? How funny. I can win the kids over pretty easy with this kind of stuff, but not my sweet hubby. Oh well, I guess you can’t always win!!!

  2. I am stilll amazed how nice these are as they have no sugar. Obviously the bananas have natural sugar whcih is why they work. so glad your kids enjoyed them.

  3. Nikki, I have other methods of mind control with my husband! ;)

    Mostly guilt. :(
    Shame on me.

  4. Oh that is funny! My poor hubby has to learn to eat healthier. He is 28 and just had to go on high blood preasure meds. Poor baby. He isn’t even too over weight. I’ll have to try guilt.
