Just Saying HI! (Kellie)

Well I just wanted write a post and say hello, I have not posted in a while.  I have been so frustrated with the journey as I have not lost in like 3 weeks now.  I know my thyroid is to blame and the meds I am taking are slowing everything down, but man am I irritated!  To top it off my hubby keeps losing every week.  He has lost 57.5 lbs since January.  I am so proud of him, but want to be hanging in there with him.

Oh well enough grumping, looking forward to Easter Sunday.  How blessed we are to have a RISEN Savior.  We are steadily getting packed up and get the keys to our new house next Friday.  Then it will be crazy trying to get everything moved as quickly as possible.  My prayer is that everyone has a wonderful and blessed holiday weekend.  Talk to you all soon!

  1. I have not had a symptom in over a year, and I had a thyroid “crash” yesterday. My temp dropped dramatically and I could not get revved back up. I haven’t lost but half a pound in almost two weeks now - and I fought for that. It seems like the fat is putting up a battle!

I have done some things suggested in the in the past and had great success. I started a mild herbal Liver Detox today.

Have a wonderful holiday - you are so right that we are blessed!

Another First (Bird)

This diet is making me do things I would never have dreamed about before. Today, at work, I ditched my first pizza party. Yes, it’s sad. Pizza is, probably, my favorite food in the whole wide world. :-p It’s YUMMY.

You see, this guy at work was moving on to another job so it was his last day. Naturally, the peeps at work decided to throw him a pizza party as a final farewell. Before the pies arrived I darted out of there before I could even get a whiff. From what I later gathered, it must have been a feeding frenzy because when I got back there wasn’t as much as a crumb on the floor. And that was only 20 minutes later!

I can’t wait for Phase III.

SPUNKed by a . . . what?

Okay, so my first spunk is from a dress - does that count?

I want to look nice for Easter Sunday, right?  I’ve lost 15 pounds in the last 7-8 weeks, so I thought for sure I could fit into that dress that was a little snug last spring.  It’s one of my fave’s, and I was very excited about it fitting well.

I tried it on today, and …blech!  I looked like I had thrown on a garbage bag!  It will need to be taken in almost 10 INCHES before I can wear it properly.  And even then, it is too wide on my shoulders.  Add to that, not a single dress in my closet fits me!

It’s just 15 pounds!  I notice it in my face and my shoes are falling off, but with my elastic pants and t-shirts, I had no clue that my body had changed.

What’s a girl to do?

  3. Its weird isn’t it. you really have to adjust your thinking. i have rediscovered some clothes that were too tight but I couldn’t quite bear to get rid of (fortunately as it turned out). Other things I am having to reluctantly realise are just too big. And its a bit sad isn’t it. We do get emotionaly attached to clothes. Shopping is hard too when you know your shape is changing and you don’t quite know where you will end up. You’re not sure how much to spend even if you have it.
So best of luck with the shopping. Hope you can find something to wear to carry you through till the next change.

Poll Questions (Blest)

Two important, One not so much…

1.  The OWOA Ladies Weekend:  This Summer or This Fall?  And final chance to suggest location.

2.  The QOM Competition: It has come to my attention over several weeks that, although I did my best to make it as fair as possible, it still isn’t quite fair.  There is a competitive advantage to the people towards the middle of the weight loss spectrum.  I propose to make a change in the prizes.  Instead of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd - I suggest dividing the competitors into two groups - those with higher starting weights in one group, those with lower in the other. Then there will be a first prize winner of a $45 Amazon gift certificate in each group.  This would leave a $15 gift certificate to be awarded by email ballot - I’m thinking something like “Most Encouraging”.  WHAT DO YOU THINK of this proposed change?

3. I believe that all people are either Salts or Sweets - by which I mean that they are either tempted most by sweet treats or by salty/savory stuff.  Which one are you? Which is your spouse?

  1. 1. Fall is my preference.
    2. Sounds great to me! But then, I’m not participating.
    3. I’m salty - chips are my downfall, unless chocolate is related. My husband is neither. Sometimes he even forgets to eat. That dirty dog. My brain is always thinking about food. It’s something I’ve had to work on and pray about.

    Comment by Anita — April 5, 2007 @ 9:10 am

  2. 1. Not coming :-( , so no preference.
    2. Yeah, that sounds fairer. What would the weight categories be?
    3. Sweets, definetely. Especially ones involving chocolate.

  3. 1. Fall is my preference too!
    2. That sounds fine to me too. I would like to know what the categories are as well…out of curiosity :P .
    3. Sweets. Especially chocolate. And ice cream. And my hubby has to be reminded to eat. Especially if he’s at the computer or reading. I echo Anita’s statement…the dirty dog!

  4. 1. Fall.
    2. Well it’s my idea - so yeah, I like it. I’m still trying to figure out the split.
    3. I’m salty, hubby is sweet. (in more ways than one!  ) You should see that man tear through a bag of candy. But you know he’s got that lean mean Marine thing going on. I’m just so glad we don’t look like Jack Sprat and his wife anymore…

  5. 1)Fall. Summer is too hot around here (assuming midwest)
2)I love the idea. It might even put me back in the running;P
3)This is hard to answer. I don’t really like “sweets”, but I do like chocolate which is often in something sweet, but by itself (when dark) isn’t. I guess I’ll go with salty as I love nuts, especially the bad ones.

  6. Now see… I love a good piece of dark chocolate. And I’m very partial to mild sweet things like shortbread and cinnamon-y muffns. BUT they still aren’t my true weakness. I didn’t get fat from sweets - though they didn’t help! I got fat from Santitas tortilla chips and pizza and…

  11. 1) Fall - the way it keeps snowing here, the kids’ll be in school through July so summer family time is in danger!
    2) Whichever way puts me in the lead :D (hehe)
3)75% sweet/25% salty - and if it’s together (choco Frosty and fries or choco covered pretzels!) even worse.

  15. 1. Fall, if Hubby will let me come.
    2. I had thought about that, too. I think that sounds fair. I had also thought about percentage of your goal lost. Like if you started the competition with 50 lbs to lose, and you lose 25 (including challenge points), you score 50%. Then whoever’s closest to 100% wins. But your way may be fairer.
    3. I usually go for sweets, but if I’ve had too many sweets, I want something salty to even things out. I love snacks that combine the two, like Chocolatey Chex Mix, or chocolate covered pretzels.

    Comment by Jana — April 5, 2007 @ 1:21 pm

  17. Good thinking on the comp. Our mathematical family thought it didn’t quite work so this sounds like a good compromise.
Sweet or salt. I would have said sweet. ceratinly chocolate but I think my tastes are changing. And can depend on the occasion, mood etc so not very conclusive. sorry about your theory.

  23. 1. I prefer fall but don’t plan around me. I’m hoping to be able to make it, but it all depends on what’s going on at home and work and where/when the trip will be.
    2. The changes work for me.
    3. I’m definitely a sweet person. I mean, I prefer sweets but I’m sweet too…ha ha ha! But seriously, I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE chocolate, preferrable milk chocolate. As for my husband, he prefers salts but if sweets are the only thing available…he’ll take it…ha!

    Comment by Cristina — April 5, 2007 @ 6:48 pm

  24. 1. I can’t come… too much stuff going one with moving cross-country most likely sometime around then.

    2. Sounds fine. Blest, I trust your decision of what’s fair. :)

    3. My mom is a salty and my dad is a sweet — and I’m cursed with both… but maybe slightly more salty.

    Comment by Anne — April 5, 2007 @ 8:20 pm

  25. 1. I’m available either time however if we decide to go in the fall we might reap the benefits of beautiful fall colors.

    2. It sounds fine to me. Blest, I also trust your decision.

    3. I don’t know that I am one or another. It depends on my hormones really. My body is a total cycle. At certain times I crave brownies or ice cream and at others I crave Mexican food or pizza. When an emotional upheaval happens…what I want to turn to really depends on my emotions. I would say that Jeff is a definite sweets person.

  26. I don’t get that homesick, and anyway you ladies would all feel like family (that was responding to my Mum saying I get homesick, in case anyone else is confused!)

You know Missy, I might just have to take you up on that offer..! It would be so amazing to spend some time travelling in the states, coming to stay with as many of you as I could… (I’ll babysit for you in exchange!) Think I might just have to think and pray this through a bit, but seriously I don’t want to continue my school job beyond the end of July, and people keep saying to me ‘do things when you’re young, free and single, before you get tied down’, so maybe I ought to start thinking big!

Are You Still Doing That Thing? (Bird)

As Brandi said in her previous post, we’re doing this Southbeach “the Blest way,” that means no cheating!

With that said, this is an exchange I had with a gal at work the other day:

Chick: We’re going to CiCi’s Pizza, do you want anything?

Me: Nope. I can’t have anything from there.

Chick: Why not?

Me: I’m doing Southbeach, remember?

Chick: Huh? Are you still doing that thing?

You see, this chick has tried many diets herself, but has apparently abandoned them in favor of pizza and other goodies. Hopefully she’ll be inspired by my weight loss pretty soon. :-)

Then there was this other chick today who said, “How long are you going to be doing that diet?” I said, “Until I’m skinny.” She was shocked! Maybe she thought, “This dude’s so HUGE that’ll take years.” I don’t know, but I explained to her that my goal is sometime around late August to September.

So, all you folks out there in the same boat, keep doing that thing you’re doing! And stay away from the Peeps this weekend, peeps.

  4. Peeps are these disgusting little Easter candies. They are made out of some kind of marshmallowy stuff and coated in sugar. They come in shapes - traditionally little chicks - and are much more fun to look at than to eat, in my opinion. Personally, my faves are Cadbury Mini Eggs and malted milk Robins Eggs….but naturally I won’t be eating them this year!

High Fructose Corn Syrup (Anita)

What is the U.S.’s deal with High Fructose Corn syrup? There is an interesting post at Not Martha about Coca-Cola and the use of sugar in other countries versus high fructose corn syrup here. I swear it’s a nation-wide conspiracy to make our residents fat and dumb. Seriously, is it cheaper? Is it easier to use in recipes? What? Look at labels when you shop. HFCS is even in chicken broth!

  1. Oh yeah. HFCS is of the devil. People think I’m joking when I say that -but I’m not. I really think that it’s from the evil one. I mean really - take stuff God made, suck all the good out of it, make it more intense then God designed so that people will crave it more than the healthy pleasures… Sounds like Satan to me!

You know - there’s that verse about receiving and enjoying the foods God created with Thanksgiving - and not saying “Do not taste, do not touch”…but God didn’tcreate HFCS, white sugar, and white flour.

    Makes me go Hmmmmm.

    Comment by blestwithsons — April 4, 2007 @ 7:35 am

  2. I’ve noticed it in really weird things too! I was shocked to find it in things in my kitchen that I had assumed were okay!! I agree….it’s EVIL!!

    Comment by Bethany — April 4, 2007 @ 7:36 am

  3. My college economics professor said that it was due to US subsidies to the sugar industry which make real sugar cost much more in the US compared with other countries. Whenever my friends went to Mexico during college, they would pick up “real” Dr. Pepper with sugar!

    Comment by Emily — April 4, 2007 @ 7:52 am

  4. Oops - I meant protectionist import laws, not subsidies.

    Comment by Emily — April 4, 2007 @ 7:57 am

  5. Amen, Blest! God didn’t make preservatives or artificial colors and flavors either!

I don’t know about a conspiracy or anything (I wouldn’t doubt it, though) but all I know is that whenever we used to go to Mexico on mission trips in college, one of the highlights was getting “Mexican Coke” (Coca-cola make with sugar…..YUMMY!) And we would still get one once in a while from the local taqueria…that was “before.” ;-)

    Comment by Brandi — April 4, 2007 @ 8:07 am

  6. No, seriously. HFCS is really bad. The worst thing about it, I think, is how it’s led to supersizing and complete portion distortion. We’re now consuming twice as much in a single “serving” - the norms are just so off.

It has everything to do with agricultural subsidies. EVERYTHING! Basically, the U.S. govt. subsidizes the corn produced in the U.S. Farmers get paid for corn regardless of market demand. So they overproduce, leading to vast surpluses…and literally, entire markets rise to absorb the surpluses. HFCS is one of those. It’s so much cheaper to produce, so it gets added to everything, and food manufacturers “add value” by making products much bigger. So you get more for your $ - which in the case of things like soda and sugar cereal is not actually a good thing.

The corn surplus has also created a bunch of other problems, like e.Coli and antibiotic resistance (the short story there: we stuff corn into our livestock, because it’s cheap. Creates cheap meat, but since the livestock hasn’t evolved to eat corn, it wreaks havoc on their digestive system. We medicate them, leading to antibiotic resistant superbugs…and cows now have acidic stomachs, which means that there are bugs like e.Coli that can withstand acid, and can thereby withstand the acid in OUR stomachs)….oh, yeah, and the livestock corn diet also totally changes the ratio of omega 3s to omega 6s, which scientists now think is at the root of heart disease and other health problems.

I could go on and on and on. And on. But the BEST BOOK EVER, if you really want to understand our messed up food supply, is Michael Pollan’s The Omnivores Dilemna. Seriously, it is one of the best books I have ever read. Anyone who cares at all about what and how and why they eat should read this.

I’ll stop now. Great topic, though.

    Comment by ali b. — April 4, 2007 @ 8:58 am

  7. It almost is a conspiracy. The US government subsidizes corn farmers to such an extent that corn syrup is dirt cheap, so it’s in everything!

    Comment by Jessica — April 4, 2007 @ 9:36 am

  8. Wow, I had no idea that there were so many others out there that feel as strongly as I do. I wish there was something we could do to change the food market in our country. It is such a pain to check every ingredient list. Even Whole Foods Market isn’t safe.

    Comment by Anita — April 4, 2007 @ 11:09 am

  9. It’s what happens when any group, like corn farmers or food manufacturers, develops such political clout. That’s good old fashioned lobbying right there. I think there’s some talk of changing the subsidy system to support smaller farms (which grow real food, promoting real health, as opposed to commodity products) and I’m trying to learn more about it. I’m also thinking that if ethanol truly becomes an alternative fuel, it could change the dynamic - suddenly, there won’t be such a surplus. BusinessWeek just did an article about how soda manufacturers are examining using sugar in case of such changes.

It is funny, though, how one thing - ag subsidies, in this case - can lead to so many unexpected consequences. When I was reading Pollan’s book, I kept shouting “That corn! That danged corn!” This from a former Iowa resident.

    Comment by ali b. — April 4, 2007 @ 11:58 am

  10. Now see…I can understand why subsidies and such would lead to using that devil’s elixir in sweet stuff - but why why WHY put it in stuff that isn’t even supposed to be sweet?! Unless it is truly to make us addicted to it in some strange way. Aiieeeee! Don’t drink the KoolAid!! (no really -Don’t.  )

    Comment by blestwithsons — April 4, 2007 @ 12:26 pm

  11. Blest, I totally agree with you. Sugar or HFCS, why do essentially non-sweet food items need sweetener?

And Ali B, I grew up on a farm in Iowa too. I think I need to go find that book at the library just so I can be informed.

What is an athlete? (Bethany)

Okay, so here’s my question:

My scales, which keep all my information (age, sex, height, etc.) so that it can tell me my body fat percentage, has an athlete setting. I remember that you have to work out x amount of hours a day to be considered an athlete, but I don’t remember how much that is.

Does anyone know?

I would like to make it one of my goals to be considered an athlete in the near future. But I’m curious how much more working out I have to do to get there…

And on that note, I did an hour’s worth of cardio at the gym on Monday, plus weight training. Yesterday was my first spin class, which totally rocks….if you’re not crazy about being able to move the next day! :P It was a lot of fun though…just harder than I thought it would be. It lasts for about an hour and fifteen minutes. And boy the seat of that bike is….ummmm….uncomfortable.
I’m hoping that I’m on the road to dropping my little “I’m a former athlete” phrase forever. I despise saying it!

Anyone else on the road to athleticism?

  1. Good for you Bethany! You are amazing!

I’ve never been an “athlete”. What does one need to do to get there?

  3. I’m definitly not an athlete. But I do like to be able to go hiking, etc., without getting winded. Last night I played a few “holes” of disc golf, and there was a LOT of uphill walking (next to a certain guy I like), and I’m pleased to say that I was able to walk up hill briskly, and talk at the same time, and not feel winded.

Two spunks and a prayer request (Debs)

Prayer request first:

Most of you probably know that I look after ‘the little one‘ one day a week. (Used to be two days, but now it’s one). What you may not know is that his Mum is pregnant, and is in fact now in the hospital being induced. (A bit more info on that can be found here andhere) I just got a text from little one’s Dad saying that things have slowed right down and asking for prayer that the baby could be born tonight (right now it’s 9.50pm for us). I thought that not only could I pray, but that I could get some other lovely people onto it as well. So if you have a moment please spare a thought and a prayer for them. And I promise to update you as and when I hear anything.

Now for the spunks:

Today I looked after the little one and this morning when I picked him up from his home his paternal grandmother remarked that the weight had just fallen off me since we last met, which was really encouraging to hear :-) [In case it sounds odd that I was looking after the little one instead of her, I left her to do a tidy up on the house and get things ready for when mother and baby come home, something many of you will realise is ten times easier when there isn’t an active toddler under your feet!]

Then later, when I took the little one home again, his Nanny and Grandpa (maternal grandparents) got back from visiting his Mum in hospital, and his Nanny couldn’t stop commenting on how different I looked and how well I was doing, and asking me how I’d done it. I told her all about south beach and this website (not easy to explain to a woman who freely admits technology is not really her strong point!)

UPDATE: Baby girl born at 3.25am weighing 9lb 2oz

My First Spunk!

I got my first spunk yesterday afternoon.  I was leaving the grocery store and a friend stopped me.  “You’ve been losing weight!  I can tell!  You look great!”, she said.  I confirmed that I’ve lost almost 15 lbs, and she was delighted for me.

I hope it’s the first of many spunks to come my way!

Drinking Game!! (Blest)

It’s time for this week’s QOM challenge!  Get ready, get set, GO! (and go, and go, and go!)

It’s time to drink that water, ladies and gents! (not that it ever ISN’T time to get your water)  Here’s the deal.  First, you must go to the Hydration Calculator and take the quiz (why does the word whiz automatically come to mind?) to find out your recommended water intake.  Here are the results I got:

95 ounces of water today, or 2.9 liters.
If you eat a healthy diet, about 20 percent of your water may come from the foods you eat. If you eat a healthy diet you can drink 76 ounces of water today, or 2.3 liters.

Now notice that it says that if I eat a healthy diet - which I do! - I can go for 80% of my recommended amount - or 76 ounces.  There’s your goal figure.  Not my result, of course, but from yours.  Whatever that 80% number is for your quiz, I want you to get that amount at least FOUR days this week.  And keep track of how you feel…other than desperate to find a potty    .

This is another one where all you have to do is let me know you did the Challenge in next week’s Weigh In.

  3. That is a nice resource. It’s good to see how our water intake needs to change depending on what’s happening in our lives.

  4. Wowie Kozowie! I need 117 ounces a day! And that is IF I eat a healthy meal!! I had a fever this morning though…I’m gonna re-figure when it’s gone!(I probably got close to that yesterday…)

  5. Mine says 75.2 oz. I have been doing really well with 64 oz since posting last week and feel great. Another glass and a half and I’m there. Good thing I’ve been practicing!

Blest, how do you find all these cool toys?

  6. It says I need 78 oz. of water a day, not counting healthy meals. I drink nearly a gallon a day, or close to 128 ounces. Does that mean I am drowning myself? :)

  7. I guess 96oz it is…I gotta start counting.

    gulp…

  8. Mine is 107 which I reckon I get most days easily anyway - I think I’m a bit addicted to drinking water! I’ll have to keep an offical record and see just how much it is (although I very much doubt it’ll be less than that :-) )

    Comment by Debs — April 3, 2007 @ 10:56 am

  9. Mine said 176.5 ounces a day. How fat does that make me. I thought I was doing great with my 64-80 ounces a day!

    Comment by Kellie — April 3, 2007 @ 3:33 pm

  10. 80% for me is 56.4 oz…no problemo….I am a water-addict!
