TEAM talk

Okay…so I did some data crunching. I never did get all the data for the week before last -but since both missing people are from my team, I’m proceeding with announcing the winner. The winner for the week ending in the Weigh In on November 27th was…

Team Stepping Stone!

Every team member contributed in this narrow victory, and it was actually the bonus point for naming the team competition which gave them the edge over Team Tigger! Congratulations Team Stepping Stone!!

As for this week, I am missing data for two people. Everyone has weighed in, but I still need exercise, water, and verse info for Kat and Stephanie. C’mon ladies! Let me know what you did last week so I can announce the winner!

Now…. Let me ask everyone a question. I could be wrong, but it seems to me like what with the busy holiday season and illnesses and and and…. That perhaps enthusiasm is waning for the competition at the moment. What do you think? Should we put it on hold until the New Year when everyone will be fired up again? Or do we power on through to the end of the year? I welcome your input!!! t e loan htax credit loan repayment studentbank student loans tcfloan personal teacherhome in teachers arizona loanssloan templetennessee loan calculatorpaid loan timeshare off Map

  1. Wow! I’m amazed it was our team
Weigh to go you guys

Um, I think the competition is helping me to be aware of how much I exercise etc, but illness seems to keep getting in the way. I’ve got a stinking cold and sore throat, and my voice comes and goes (and is gone more than it’s here!), so I may need to be on the ill list again this week Blest - I’ll confirm that on Monday, but I seem to need most of my energy for just living, let alone exercising and all that jazz!

  3. I think for me it would help to have a break … I’m barely keeping up with family stuff that needs done with my rapidly diminishing quantities of brain cells … and while I drink lots of water and break into a sweat cleaning, I’m not remembering to keep up with it or get verses memorized. Maybe by January, once Christmas business is past I can focus better…

  4. Was your ‘kkeep’ going eagerness Anne? Or just a typo?

  5. Ohh I’m so sad that Team Tigger lost due to the bonus point because I was going to suggest the name that won and didn’t!!!! ARGHHHH! Anyways I am all for a break. Honestly my head is spinning right now. My kids have performances and practices at church, I’ve got Christmas parties, homeschooling, work, you name it. I’m lucky that I get my dishes done each day (and that is mainly because I finally taught my 8 yo how to do it). ;o) Take today…I have a Christmas party to be at in 2 hours and I haven’t even had a shower yet….plus I still have to make my party dip. Yeah I should probably get offline and get my b-u-t-t in gear!!

  6. I will continue to try either way, but I admit that it’s getting rough right now with all the stuff going on. I’m room mom and we have 4 parties to attend in the next 8 days, and presents to buy and I really need to concentrate on the kids after that. (they’re in public school, out next Friday at 11 a.m.

  8. I’m one for a break. Right now I am dealing with a house full of strep throat, ear infections, bronchial asthma, hand foot and mouth disease, coughing, puking, fever… I’m tired just typing it out. I suggest we start up again on January 8.

  9. I guess stopping the competition wouldn’t mean stopping the site (guys, I couldn’t live without checking back here every so often - it’s a part of my routine!)
However, stopping the competition might take off a bit of the extra stress. Maybe?!?!

    Comment by Debs — December 8, 2006 @ 3:17 pm

  10. Oh no worries, Debs. If the competition goes on hiatus, we will still be blogging!! And you and I will both still be on the Beach….RIGHT??? We’ll still weigh in and all that - just no official tallying of competition stats until the competition resumes. Not that I’ve made a decision yet. I’m still processing feedback!

After all, on top of everything else - a lot of people, myself included, will be on the road soon. I’ll be away from home for three weeks! I plan to take my scale. And I will be sticking to plan - but still, it will make the tallying and data crunching more challenging. Plus, I think I’ll be hard pressed to get people to weigh in on Christmas Day!

    Comment by blestwithsons — December 8, 2006 @ 3:23 pm

  11. Hmmm, I’m going to vote with my teamie to press through (maybe take the Christmas Day weigh in off lol).

I do know that things are crazy right now though. We’ve got plenty going on too. The next few weeks could be quite chaotic for my family.

I’ll go with whatever is decided :)

    Comment by Blair — December 8, 2006 @ 3:37 pm

  12. I am going with Stephanie and vote for a break — I am having a hard time keeping up with life in general this week.

    Comment by Maria — December 8, 2006 @ 3:56 pm

  13. I’m all up for continuing. This is life. We can’t just put our efforts on hold AGAIN. That is why we are all here. We are tired of taking breaks. We need others to be accountable too. C’mon ladies!!! WE can do it!!!

    Comment by Tami — December 8, 2006 @ 4:48 pm

  14. I could go either way, but I don’t want anyone to feel bad about their efforts either. It is a busy time of the year and it is good to have some sort of reminder to not get to relaxed about healthy eating and stuff. We all are just doing the best we can.

I’m wondering if the contest could be simplified from now until the New Year. Then, maybe after the holidays are over there could be a grand finale contest of some sort that would get everyone excited again.

    Comment by Anita — December 8, 2006 @ 9:32 pm

  15. I could use a break. It’s been easy to get my water in, but not so easy to find time for exercise or memorization what with birthday parties, holiday stuff, and today’s trip to the Nutcracker. But I’m okay with what everyone else wants.

    Comment by Carrie K. — December 9, 2006 @ 10:32 am

  16. I’m last in on this… but I will go with what everyone else decides. On my own I will continue with everything, but if we take a break, I won’t have to try and remember to email Tami with my stats. :)

Another small victory (Anita)

Suddenly, two posts in a row from me. Ha! Enjoy it because it might be awhile until I resurface again. *smirk*

I’m a little bit excited about my workout at the health club today. About 2 months ago I started riding the bike at the club instead of doing the eliptical machine. I had the impression that I wouldn’t get much of a workout riding the bike so I purposely chose the cross country program that changes the resistance to similate a series of hills. I was surprised that I had to reduce the resistance by 4 levels! And my goal was to work my way up to the normally programmed resistance levels.

Today, I didn’t reduce the resistance at all! Yeah! I’m psyched.american scoring family credit5 groceries gas card credit4series accreditationaccreditation yvcc renewalachieve finincial union creditcredit fedral plus union affinityvaccinal centers accreditation andcorporation acceptance agricredit Map

Hitting the slopes (anita)

Filed under: Just Life Anita @ 7:11 pm

We finally made it up to the slopes today for the first-for-us skiing of the season. We were a little discouraged that last week was perfect weather and this week wasn’t as good. Well, we decided to go anyway. The snow was a little crusty, but we still had a good time. Skiing mid-week feels like pushing the reset button on life. We almost always come back a little more relaxed (although a little more tired) and with much better attitudes.

But two things were really great for me. When I put on my ski pants this morning they actually fit. Yeah! That was a really cool feeling. Last year I could barely breathe when I put them on. Also, I’m thinking that the weight lost helped me overall because I didn’t get as tired as I usually do.

Secondly, my attitude about weight loss has really been changing thanks to all of you. You guys really are inspiring!

Before, I didn’t think that I could actually lose any weight, even if I put my mind to it. I felt like I had no control over the ups and downs of my weight. Wrong. I have lost some weight. And it feels good.

And before, I felt like food controlled me rather than me being able to control what I ate. While I walked past the coffee bar today I had a huge craving for a yummy looking chocolate peanut butter bar. I looked at it longingly for a few minutes. And then I walked on. Wow, that wouldn’t have happened in the past. Little by little I feel like I am getting better at making a choice about whether I want to something sugary and fattening or home made and healthy. We packed our own lunches today and only purchased one hot chocolate and shared it. So, it is good on our pocket books as well.

I just wanted to say thanks to all of you for being a part of those changing attitudes. I couldn’t have done it without you.

A SPUNK when I wasn’t sure I deserved it… (debs)

… was so much sweeter!

It came from the same lady as last time, and she said “You’ve lost some more weight since I saw you last week haven’t you?” I told her that actually I’d put a bit on, but she was convinced all the same! Maybe it was that fact that my trousers kept needing to be pulled up - I wasn’t wearing a belt like i normally do

I’d been beating myself up a bit over the last couple of weeks, but she could still see a difference. And that’s what I’m clinging on to right now! (Oh, and I will write about my meeting on Monday, but not till the little one is down for a long nap ;-) )

Pilates and Posture

Back, years ago, one of the things I was complimented most on was my posture. Whether is was military training or what, I don’t know, but keeping my back straight and abs tucked in became a habit. So much so that I didn’t even realize I was doing it all the time. Obviously by my girth, I traded that habit (as well as others) for bad posture and sagging abdominals.

Having been the “crunch queen” in the past, I was skeptical when Allie introduced me to Pilates after the birth of my second daughter (mind you I delivered another after her). When we went through the 20 minute tape that first time, yes, I felt I lacked some coordination but I truly didn’t think it was working my abs that much….until later that day. I remember laughing at something and realizing that my abdominals were sore! She was like “see, I told you!” Well, I did the Pilates tapes consistantly until we started trying to get pregnant again (during which time I undid all my hard work….again).

Well, fast forward to recent months and the incident where my youngest broke our VCR. If I did pilates, I would have to do the upper body one only. In November I broke down and purchased (ebay) the DVD versions to the videos I’d had. I remembered how relaxed I would feel after Pilates and how it seemed to give me more muscle control for everyday chores. This is my fourth week of doing Pilates five times a week (I do cardio too) and I can see a big difference in just my posture already. I’m sitting up taller, standing taller and looking slimmer. Of course, my measurements in a few weeks will tell more than my “feelings” but I actually looked in the mirror yesterday and thought, “hmm, interesting.”

Food has been such a focus for me that serious exercise had been on the back burner. It’s nice to get the body moving. When I have less around my middle, the moves will be even more controlled and smooth but for now, I’m just feeling good about doing it at all.loan small credit business cardbusiness loan equipmentgrant and loan businessloan faqs businessloans business neededuk business loansmortgage home loan camonthly calculate loan personal save and Map

  1. WOOOHOOO FOR BLAIR!!!!! I know what you mean about feeling it and coordination issues. LOL I felt that way the first couple of times I did pilates, too. I love pilates!!! I need to get my DVD back out and give it a go over the holidays while it is so cold outside. I can do those anytime of day and not have to rely on Dan being here to get it done.

    Comment by Leann — December 4, 2006 @ 3:44 pm

  2. I’m not really familiar with pilates, but I find yoga to strengthen my posture and it’s great for relaxing too. In fact, sometimes when I have a tension headache, I do some back-postures and find it goes away.

How is pilates different than yoga, do you know? Does it require equipment?

    Comment by lady laura — December 4, 2006 @ 5:58 pm

  3. I have a DVD for floorwork. I just use a mat and a DVD and I am set. I think it is a combination of yoga and basic stretching and callisthenics (msp?) without the spiritual aspect of yoga. There is a lot of ballet stuff in it and that is why I like it so much. I used to be a dancer if you can believe that. ;) A guy named Pilates came up with it. There is some expensive equipment that some trainers have but you don’t need it to do the basics.

    Comment by Leann — December 4, 2006 @ 7:09 pm

  4. ohhhhh thanks for the reminder! i’ve been meaning to start back on pilates (especially now with the healing broken toe).

    Comment by anne — December 4, 2006 @ 8:12 pm

  5. Thanks for this Blair. I desperately need something to do in my house. Up until now I have been running but now it is FRIGID outside. My husband is still running but with my rheumatoid I cannot tolerate the cold. If my hands and feet get cold they go numb and it takes hours for them to start “working” again. We have FitTV so I am going to set up my DVR to record some of the Pilates classes to do in my bedroom. I could for sure benefit from having better coordination!!!

    Comment by Mandi — December 5, 2006 @ 7:25 am

  6. I don’t know much about yoga but is it more stretching than strengthing? There are a lot of isometrics in pilates coupled with all the stretching.

Oh and like Leann said, you don’t have to have equipment for pilates (I hear the machines are very expensive). during my upper body workout I use light hand weights. I would like a mat but currently use a quilt lol. I use the Winsor Pilates DVDs but there are lots of them out there by other people.

Leann, have you seen pics of Joseph Pilates? He was seriously fit and toned! A dancer - very cool! I do like the graceful feel of pilates. My darling hubby has a hard time calling it exercise because you don’t really do much sweating but he does admit that it is quite challenging (yes, he’s done them with me from time to time).

Yes Anne - pilates would be perfect for while you wait for that toe to heal!

And Mandi - I could see how it would be beneficial for you as well. How cool that you can get it on fitTV.

  10. Anita - for the water do something like divide it up into little chunks (Ok what comes next is a bit geeky, but I am a mathematician!) Say you’re awake 16 hours a day, that’s only 5oz an hour, and you can do that easily right? Or, if you make yourself drink water 4 times a day (set a timer) that’s only 20oz each time.

  11. I’m up again :-( But only .2 (think that’s right, I’m at 279.6 - you get check the maths Blest!)
I’ve had a really bad week with regards to my mental state, health and exercise, so I’m not surprised. I had my meeting with the headteacher today, and things are looking more positive (I’ll try and post more on that tomorrow).

    water 7\7

exercise 1\7 (I’ve been battling my cold, and am feeling yuck today - sneezing and wheezing, but don’t think that’s really any excuse to have not exercised)

memory verses 0 - it’s especially these and my mental state that I’ve struggled with this week, so I’m gonna make a conscious effort to work on it this week.

SPUNK in any language! (blest)

Hee hee…I just got my first non-English SPUNK! I was outside measuring my van (she is dead and must go on a trailer…long story) and my neighbor was walking by. She is the sweetest older lady. I really like her - but we can’t talk much since she knows about as much English as I know Spanish. And I haven’t seen her in quite some time.

She asked if I needed any help with the van and I told her we were fine. And then she said “Oh! Your face!!” and she cupped her hands around her own chin. Then she made hourglass figure motions with her hands in reference to the rest of me. And that was with me in a sweatsuit! I’m pretty sure that translates to a SPUNK, don’t you think?!

I'm back - Jana

If you’d like to see some pics from my cruise, then cruise on over to my place.

I am happy to report that I followed my diet on board to the best of my ability. I did not take any Slim-Fast with me, so I improvised for breakfast and lunch, but I really was very careful what I chose. And believe me, it was hard! They had a 24-hour pizza bar. Guess how many pieces of pizza I had? Go ahead, guess. NONE!! I also decided ahead of time that I would allow myself either one dessert or a bite of three desserts per day. I stuck to that. I also exercised every single day. They had an awesome gym on the ship and I alternated cardio and strength training every day.

I won’t be home to my own scale until Monday, so I’ll have to wait until then to see how my actual weight held up, and really I’d be surprised if I didn’t gain a pound or two because of altering my breakfast and lunch from Slim-Fast to regular food. But overall I feel great, I didn’t overeat, and I am feeling so wonderfully relaxed!

The one thing I disliked was all the mirrors all over the ship. I don’t like the constant reminder of what my body looks like, especially in a bathing suit, LOL! My only consolation is that I was FAR from the fattest person on board. And I guess seeing myself all the time kept me on track, too!

Laura's snow

It came, that promised snow. Some places got 18 inches; I haven’t heard our official count yet. I cannot open my back door, if that is a clue.

In my paranoia that one of my clients will actually try to bring their children to me today, in spite of the interstate and major hiways being closed, I was out shoveling at 6:00 a.m. It is like, 12 degrees outside, but I only felt it for the first couple of minutes. After that, it was all about the dance of the snow and the shovel. It was a beautiful thing!

I couldn’t do it all at once, there is simply too much of it. So, if I do two more dances today, does that count as exercising three times, or only one? Okay, I know that wouldn’t be right, and that sore muscles and sweat are their own reward, but I’m grasping at straws here….. we are out of milk. No hot chocolate for the Lady.:( Not even any milk in my coffee.

This is a day that could go either way: sensationally snowily silent, or cold, crabby, and crowded. But it shore is pretty.

*Edit: If anyone is interested, I have more pics on my blog and I’m sure there will be even more later. The sun is shining brightly and it is gorgeous out there!
