On the weigh out

The last weigh in of January! Wow that went fast!! One 12th of 2008 is already gone, how’s it going for you? We’re heading into the final few weeks of Happy Heart, put those shoes on and finish strong! Even if you think you don’t stand a chance at winning, let these next few weeks set the pace for the months to come!!

    I did something painful to my back gaining the first 4 points of the week and I’ve been hobbling around, taking as many painkillers as possible and not lseeping very well for most of the week, and comfort-eating in consequence. My back’s feeling much better than it was, but it’s still achey.

    January has not been a healthy month. I’ve been ill for much of it, only managed to get to the gym once (and injured myself when I did) and have gained rather than lost over the month. I’m hoping February is a better month.

  8. On November 12th (the Monday before I got here) I weighed 263. Today I weigh 238.4, so that’s 24.6 down while I’ve been here. Not bad I reckon!

    (and to anyone that just noticed I’d got my maths wrong - I had made a typo, but now it’s fixed!)

    So when I weighed yesterday morning I was 218.8. Somehow I gained 3.2 pounds in less than 24 hours!

    I earned 15 HH points.

    Lent begins next week. Even though I’m not Catholic I always chose to give something up during that time. I’ve decided to fast from carbs because I love them too darn much! If anyone else is interested in sacrificing something during that time as well, let me know and we can keep each other accountable. We can even make it “official” if more than one of you is interested.

  14. Boo, don’t panic. It’s bound to be water retention. Did you eat a lot of salty stuff over the weekend? Drink lots of water today and you’ll be ok I’m sure :-)

  15. Wow Debs, you are doing awesome! How long have you been in El Paso now? 2 months? That’s 24lbs in 2 months?!?! I want secrets…all SECRETS! How are you doing it? What’s the biggest difference between what you’re doing now that you are staying with Blest vs when you were back home? I know you are exercising more but what else are you doing? Why do you think you are loosing so much more and so consistently now?

    Hmmm…is Blest not feeding you??? :)

  16. I weighed in at 210.4, so that’s .6 down from last week.

    Grrrr….

    I just want to get below 210 once and for all!!! I know what I’m doing wrong (I think) and I just have to fix it. I eat fine all day and I work out like a mad woman but I snack way too much in the evenings, even if it’s snacking on healthy stuff like south beach snack bars or peanut butter or almonds or sugar free fudgsicled…I’m going overboard. I need to stop the madness!

    I just snack for no reason. I’m not hungry. I shouldn’t be board, I have plenty to do but I think I end up looking for stuff to eat so that I don’t have to do what I need to do. :(

    Oh, I did get all my HH points last week, 28.

  17. DebbieBoo, are you giving up ALL carbs?

    I’ll give up something too. I can’t decide what to give up though. Here’s what I’ve come up with:
    1) my daily coffee/cappucino. I buy the Hills Bros sugar free vanilla and usually drink 2 of those a day. Sometime I splurge and drink the toffee flavored and that’s not sugar free.
    2) give up sweets…all sweets. candy, ice cream, cookies, etc. except for my protein bars…i don’t want to give those up. but i will give up the south beach snack bars and cookies. :)
    or 3) give up snacking after dinner.

    Any thoughts?

    Yes, blest feeds me!
    I’ve been here 2 1\2 months.
    I’m exercising more than I was at home, and actually sticking to the diet (whereas at home I’d kind of fallen off the wagon and got stuck there).
    I have days where I might only eat one carb, and some days where I might eat 4 (although not so many of those, and if I do overdo the carbs I’ll try to stay off them the next day).
    There really isn’t much junk stuff in the house, and of what there is I don’t really like, so am not tempted to eat it! And I’ve never got into eating any of the south beach bars or anything like that. Does that help?

    I am the same as last week…

    Hopefully my last appointment with my OB/GYN is this coming Friday… this has been much too long for me not to be able to really exercise. (8 weeks since surgery with a few complications along the way) I feel good though eating vegetarian much more so I think I will stay with that a while longer. :)

    All you ladies (and one man) are doing so great! I love reading about the progress and the things you all are doing for yourselves to be healthier. Remember the journey is about much more than what a scale says. Better eating habits, adding exercise, thinking before you put food in your mouth, feeling better and better along the way, lowering blood pressures, cholesterol, triglycerides, lipids and sugars, etc… are all great things to accomplish, too. It is very encouraging to read about all the little successes and look back to realize they were part of a much bigger success in the long run!!!

  22. One of these days I’m going to have to get back to El Paso to meet Blest. :) I lived there for about 8-9 years but I moved away after college and after I moved away my parents moved away too due to my Dad’s company moving him, so I don’t get back there mcuh.

    Well Debs, you are rockin! Keep up the good work! I think I just need to concentrate on not snacking between meals…especially after dinner!

    HH points - 9 . Just managed to equal last week’s total which is not so great. Fortunately managed to persuade husband out to walk with me yesterday else it would have been only 5. I am not good at walking on my own without a reason to do it. It was a lovely day so I think he was glad we did. And we saw three herons.
    Will try to do better this week, the challenge is a great help though. My problem is usually that there is so much to do that taking time out to exercise seems difficult and is easily skipped without the accountability of this blog. Since much of my work (and travel - I drive) is sedentary I do need to for my health’s sake.
    Great Job everyone. Jana have you worked out your BMI because maybe you have reached the right point for you and that calculation might just help you to decide one way or another.

    Christina.. I am hooked on the SB protein bars too!They are yummy. I eat one for breakfast every morning(great with coffee) and usually another SB meal for lunch. Maybe I should go back to phase 1 for a little kickstart?

  25. Elly - according to the different charts and calculations I’ve looked at, I could weigh as little as 133 and still be healthy. I think my BMI is 23.3 right now, so a little lower would be good. And I know a lot of it is muscle - Hubby was pointing that out to me. It just is a little discouraging to realize that the number on the scale hasn’t changed in almost 3 months!

  26. Christina… Kellie and I live in El Paso, too… (although my days may be numbered here). Did you go to UTEP? Did you go to high school here? I don’t know how old you are and I am guessing not as old as me or my hubby but hubby went to Irvin high school way back in the 80’s. Would love to meet you if you get this way sometime. :) Blest is great about having all of us over to chat together when she can, too.

  27. Hi, everyone. We’re crushed for time, energy, whatever. I’ve had two sick children, myself sick, etc., and our little guy has his BIG developmental center (hours of appointment with several people) next week. I’m in full blown survivor mode.

    I stepped on the scale this morning after two weeks and was actually delighted to see that I’m staying steady - 241. I just keep going up and down around 240 +/- 2 lbs. I guess that’s good in a way, since I’m really not thinking about it much, just trying not to overeat.

    I have to get through next week, then I’m going to try the couch to 5K. I’m not a runner, but I want to do this very much.

  29. Hi Leann, I did go to UTEP. I moved to El Paso my junior high year, so I went to Morehead Jr High and then on to Coronado High School and then on to UTEP. After I graduated from UTEP I got a job in Iowa, so I moved to IA, lived up there for 5 years, met a wonderful man while up there, got married and we moved to Dallas in 1999.

    I know Irvin HS. :)

    I don’t get back to El Paso much because I have no family there but I have lots of friends out there. Hopefully someday soon we can make a trip out there, I’d love to show my husband and daughter where I used to live and would love to meet you all!

    I have not been doing so great with HH..Sorry :(
    After going home to NC for almost a week and coming back home to a lot of work..HH has taken a back seat. I haven’t even made it to the gym since Ive been home!

    I know I am going to have to get back into my exercise routine to break through the 141 point. This is a new week!

    I slept in because there was no school..but I have to work tonight.. Hair still needs to be cut on MLK Day :) .

    Down 2.5!! Thank you thank you thank you, Jana, for helping me brake through! I was actually 1 pound less yesterday, but I didn’t drink much water so I’m likely retaining a little now.

    I did not reach my goal of 30 minutes of exercise every day, but I did 30 mins for 5 days, so give me 10 points!

    Can I tell you the bonus points this week were HARD! And earning them was the best thing I’ve done all week. I had read all the posts before, but didn’t feel like I had anything important to say. If my own feeling of encouragement is any indicator, having something I think is important to say is not what matters - it still feels good to get comments. Thanks for the encouragement, friends!

  11. Ok, here’s the sitch…

    On January 1st I weighed in and found that I was back up to 160 from the surgery and no exercise since September and all. At that point I began eating vegetarian again and today I am 6 pounds down from that date. I currently weigh 154. The doctor has finally given the ok for more exercise so I am going to plug in a Pilates session a few times a week and some walking.

    I also colored my hair this weekend and had three people at church tell me how young I am looking and that I looked a bit on the trimmer side. You have no idea how I needed that after this surgery and all I have been through. I am happy! :)

    Could use a bit of prayer, too. I am still rejecting stitches… nuff said, so pray this too shall pass quickly and I can be done with this part of my life forever! Thanks!!!

    As for the holiday part, I am taking a day off homeschooling and getting some more cleaning done. I might pop out and spend a bit of Christmas money on some new boots. I purged books, shoes and clothing this weekend and have some sewing stuff to go through and some bread to bake today. (finally!) Blest, want a loaf??? I know it is late but it has been a mad, mad, MAD world in my house for two weeks…

    Ok no change in weight, which is fine by me.
    Only 9 HH points and I felt I worked hard to fit those in. At least its more exercise than I would have got without the challenge.
    Well done Jana and Missy and Debs and Debbie Boo who are all reporting good losses. But well done everybody even if you went up a bit. Everyone is keeping at it.
    I suppose a holiday in January is nice cos its a holiday but no we don’t get it here. However my Monday 8 am lesson dropped out last week so I can get up slowly on Mondays which is nice as the day goes on a long time. I get in just after 8 pm and husband always cooks. Generally a curry of some sort and its ready when I arrive. Bliss.

    Down 2.4. I don’t know how, I was ill last week, got not much exercise (12 points) and didn’t eat very well. All I can think is that it was a water-retaining time of the month last week. Ah well, take it as grace, thank God and keep on keeping on. It feels like a struggle at the moment though.

  15. Well awesome Jana and Cristina, full marks for your happy heart points. But actually well done everyone. I know what my life is like and how hard it is to fit exercise in so I guess for each one of you its what you could manage with maybe a little push to do better next week.

    So me. Up 1 this week to 167.4 (Goal was 168).
    Happy heart points 13 which I was quite pleased with.
    Not sure my eating has been great. I keep nibbling the chocolate that’s around from Christmas at home and at school. I suppose that as meals are still South Bech friendly It is keeping me ok but I mustn’t get complacent.

    Great reading everyone’s thoughts and feelings on their weight loss journeys. Thank you for sharing. It was a real challenge Blest.

    I’ve got a long, hard week ahead. Prayers are much appreciated! Today was the first day of Stanford 10 testing and 70 of our Kinder students were out because of a virus going around. It bad enough that these babies have to take a standardized test, yet some of them are taking it while their still sick!

Hurts so Good

I know it’s naughty…but doggone it that is a good workout song!! :lol: How was your movin’ and groovin’ this week? I know I pushed myself HARD, and my quads have not forgotten it! :eek:

And of course, it’s Monday - so it’s time to REPORT! Let’s have those weigh-in stats and for those of you in the Happy Heart Competition, your exercise points puh-lease!!

(Debs edits to add: Please only tell us your exercise points, and then blest will add the bonus points afterwards. That way it stops us getting confused! Also, remember Happy Heart started on Tuesday, so you can’t include any points you earn last Monday!)

    I got my 28 points in for exercise (4 points each day). Yes! I really did! While I was out of town I joined a gym where we were at for 1 week and I went every day and put in 1.5 hours. On New Years Day they were closed, so I went for an hour long walk with my husband and the day we drove back…we were up at 4am, on the road at 5:30am, back home around 2pm and I was at the gym around 3pm…that’s crazy nuts!

    I didn’t realize we already had a challenge…guess while I was out of town I missed that post. Is it too late to post a pic?

    Um, yeah, that’s up A LOT from two weeks ago. Some is water. Hopefully MOST of it is water!

    22 HH points. I tried really hard to wake up at 5 to get in a 30 min walk before work, but my body’s sleep schedule is whack so I couldn’t fall asleep until well past 1. Maybe tomorrow . . .

  12. Christina - WORKOUT CLOTHES! So unless you opened your presents just before or after working out, it’s unlikely that any of the Christmas pics will work.

    It was great last week going for long walks with my dear SIL, Boo. She has a cool bike/jog trail behind her house. Now I’m back in the big city running around with all of the cars and trucks!

  15. I feel so out of the loop since I am not doing the Happy Heart thing. Oh well, I love you all and I am so proud that you are all working so hard for your health. I am down 1 pound this week. 3 More to go until I get where I was before December. I have at least 13 to go in all and then I will re-evaluate. But 150 seems like it should be a good weight for someone my size and shape. Good luck to you all this week!!! Keep up the good work!!!

  19. No no, but thanks so much. I never make time to exercise. I know I need to and I really want to but I just don’t do it in the winter much. I plan to start moving more, but I didn’t at all last week and who knows if I will this week. Thank you though Debs! And Tami, we will just have to cheer everyone else on!!!

  23. 166.4 down 3 and back to about where I want to be. I am going to continue with south Beach principles though (say stage 2 ish) and see what happens.
    Exercise points gained - 11. Maybe the best I will do but we’ll see. Having the challenge does help with the motivation. There was only 1 day I did no exercise.

  25. Char, you must have done some exercise this week though, right? You can count one point for every 15 mins you did, up to an hour a day.

    You can always follow Bekki’s example and draw a picture of yourself using paint or something, or if you have a scanner get one of your kids or your hubby to draw you and scan it in.

    Or you can just not worry about it, and work extra hard at getting this weeks bonus points. Talking of which, blest needs to get that post up. I am off to remind her…

    Up 4.5 pounds! Yikes. I ate everything in site over the past two weeks.

    Ok, the good news is I did good with my eating today (only 1500 calories consumed) and I’ve going to kick this thing in!

  32. Debs, be warned, it’s harder to kick Bird than you’d think. It greatly humbles me to say this, but he’s got some jedi reflexes and always blocks kicks and hits. It’s uncanny! And frustrating!
