Pass the potatoes and skip the pie

To the weigh in post we go

We cheer as we weigh

And wait for the day

That the final pound lets go-o!

Working together to change our weighs

With good food and exercise

We cheer on each gal

And our favorite fowl

As we slowly change our size!

I think my Christmas fitness gift to myself is the fact that I’ve started losing again after being pretty much stuck for so long, and that I may well be becomming addicted to exercise!

  2. 216/179/165 stg - up 2, but I was at a wash yesterday so I’m holding out for better. :)

I ate a few things this week that were not on plan, but was amazed how easy it was to eat small portions and not go hog wild! Get some water and some exercise in me and it’ll be all good.

  3. 168/148/130..Down 2.. total so far..20 lbs..YAY!!

  4. 220/166.2/168 down 2, but the scales are a bit variable at the moment. I can get several different answers straight after each other fortunatley all around the same place ie between 165 and 169.
Anyway I conclude I am holding steady which is good.
I am at home with a cold today and feeling very lacking in energy. Well done Debs for all the exercising. Good for you Missy for your positive attitude.

  5. I forgot the Christmas fitness gift. Um maybe should be investing in gym membership. i just get no exercise at the moment. Debs and Bekki are putting me to shame.

  6. 210/149/140

Down 1.4 or so (I am at my grandmother’s in FL and her scale doesn’t do decimals). Pretty good for as much as I ate, but then I didn’t eat anything I wasn’t supposed to.

I won’t be able to weigh in next week - I’ll be at Disney World.

  8. 200/166.8/160

Down 0.8, I wish it were more, but down is down.

In a sense, I think my current fitness level is already a gift to myself. I’m fitter and slimmer than I have ever been. EVER! I want to keep it all going in the new year, keep going to the gym, keep eating well. I’ve got a good medium term goal of a weekend away in the Lake district in May, when I want to be able to climb lots of mountains/hills and a) not be at the back of the group all the time and b) not be dead (well, very achey) for a week afterwards.

  9. 190/160/150

Stayed the same. I need to start exercising so that will be my gift to myself. I am losing soooooo much slower as I get closer to goal, so I need to start working out!!!

  14. 232/222/149.9

My scale is OBVIOUSLY broken because it’s showing a 1.2 lb increase, even though the past two mornings I was weighing in around 219. Stupid scale! But my theory is over the holidays I was getting 8-10 hrs of sleep, giving my body more time to lighten it’s load, whereas last night I only got 4 hrs of sleep. Oh well.

My fitness gift to myself? Well, I bought myself an ipod shuffle which will be a lot less bulky to work out w/ than my reg ipod. And I need to convince my grandma to give me the treadmill that’s collecting dust in her garage. Oh, and go back to the gym. That will be good, too. I’ll be in 2 weddings next year. One is for my friend Greta who’s marrying John, my “trainer,” so it might be good to go back and see him and see what he can do w/ me by the time the wedding comes along in May.

Fitness gift? I need a scarf (hint, hint! you know who you are!) to help me out when I go running in the cold.

    Great going, all you losers!
Boo–I doubt the scale is broken. As females, our weights fluctuate for a number of reasons. Seriously. I know it can be frustrating, but the good news is it can go both ways–down as well as up.

    Up 1.2

Well, I hate that I have a gain BUT I’ll take 1.2 considering how I ate last week and no exercise. So, I’ve got some work to do to get where I was before my vacation.

Fitness gift? Hmmm…well, I have 3 gym memberships already…ha ha ha! And yes, I use them…well, 2 out of the 3. And I have an mp3 player (dell dj) but I sure would like an ipod (but can’t justify it since i already have an mp3). I would also like bicycling shoes since I started a spin cycle class BUT I don’t need those either. So, I think I’ll just continue using my gym memberships and be happy.

A friend of mine is contemplating getting a group of women together to do karate. I mentioned it to my husband and he sounded interested - even though I’ve mentioned it before and he wasn’t. So, if the ladies don’t do it, maybe my husband and I will. I think it would be a great!

(down 2 from last week! I can’t believe it!) Can anyone explain why it is that the number can fluxuate within an hour or less of waking up (and not eating)? I’m excited about this week because my tap class is back on…that could be my gift to me this Christmas. :)
    Happy Monday!

  20. Brandi, I was just being facetious, as usual. And I assume that scarf hint is for me, since I’m the accessory queen of the fam.

Speaking of scarves, I mean to point out earlier to our English friends that the scarf I’m wearing in the pic w/ Brandi is a summer scarf from Accessorize. I love that place!

And Christina, I hear ya about not feeling justified in buying a 2nd mp3 player. I got my ipod shuffle from the online Apple store and it’s refurbished, so it was $30 cheaper. That made me feel a bit better about it. Or you can always ask for one for Christmas. Here’s the link if you’re interested: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=44BD9AA2&nclm=Certified
Sorry, don’t know how to make it a pretty little link.

  21. Debbie, thanks for the info on the refurbished, I’m going to check those out. So you’ve had good look with refurbished?

    Comment by Cristina — November 26, 2007 @ 11:56 am |Edit This

  22. Yeah, my computer is a refurbished Macbook and one year later it still works great! Bird is always coveting it.
Plus, everything comes w/ a one year warranty and their customer service is really great. I’ve only had one prob w/ my ipod last year and I took it into the store and they fixed it for me.

  25. Do any of you South Beachers have new tips on snacks that don’t need preparation or refrigeration? I’m going to a conference and am worried that I may need a nibble between meals…perhaps fruit? I’m in phase 2, thank heavens!

    btw, thanks Nikki!

    Comment by elizabeth — November 26, 2007 @ 2:35 pm |Edit This

  26. I always carry nuts they are so portable. Fruit is ok but don’t overdo it. Veg sticks don’t take long to prepare with houmus, I pack it in an insulated lunch box with an icepack but don’t know if that is possible for you if you are away from home. And baby bel lights are easy to carry but again probably not good too long away from the fridge.

    Comment by Elly — November 26, 2007 @ 2:53 pm |Edit This

  27. Elizabeth, for snacks I’ll usually do a South Beach Diet snack bar or I’ll take some turkey slices with a Babybel Light Cheese or nuts like Elly suggested.

    Comment by Cristina — November 26, 2007 @ 2:58 pm |Edit This

  28. SB bars and nuts are something I do too. Take a small ice chest and get ice in the Hotel you are staying in. Then you can take cheese, veggies and anything else.

  33. Hi everyone,
Blest who goes to the same church I do turned me on to this website. Speaking of turning, she made my head turn when I saw her and saw how much of change she had made thanks to South Beach and the Lord. I have tried off and on but most guys don’t really care about losing weight so I was basically on my own. I played sports in High School and for the last year I have started to go back to the gym and work out everyday. I have gone down a waist size however, I want to look like I did back in college. I told my doctor I just retain water but he said, ” So does the Hoover Dam” Sometimes, I just tell people, I am a recovering anorexic. Ok Ok, just kidding, I spend 20 years in broadcasting the last 4 anchoring the ten o’clock news. By the way, tv adds 20 pounds to you. Since 1990 I have been teaching Journalism at the University of Texas at El Paso and also reporting for NPR. I also host four talk shows and teach College writing and Public Speaking part time at the University of Phoenix,
Well enough of that, Lord willing with Blest’s help and encouragement along with you all and of course the Lord I will be able to shed about 30 pounds.
You all have a great evening. I am bushed after grading what seemed like stacks and stacks of essays.
    Louie

Don’t o’erindulge

Cause if you do…

You’ll feel like a turkey!!

Okay - it’s not fine art. But what do you expect?

It’s the pre-Thanksgiving Weigh In!! Gimme those numbers and tell me what you’re thankful for!

I’m up 1 pound but I really expect to see it go by tomorrow a.m or Wednesday at the latest. AF was 7 days late and finally decided to come along this morning. Let me tell you how prego my tummy looks at this moment. I really am figuring I’ll be down several pounds due to this bloat.

I am thankful for a little girl that is so girly. Would you believe that I was scared of it while I was pregnant with her?! I am thankful that God gave me a little one that loves every single thing that her momma makes for her. I’m thankful that she stands at my side touching and exclaiming “pretty, pretty”. I’m also thankful for the financial ability to be able to do things such as sewing and knitting for her.

  13. Hearing about all the losses is exciting! Way to go, everyone!

I had to check back in and tell you about my friend, Melissa. She’s my friend here at work I started South Beach with. She’s lost 20 POUNDS!!!! And I’m actually not the least bit jealous that I’ve only lost 12 in the same amount of time! I’m so proud of her! In fact, the pants she’s wearing today are falling off of her! How exciting is that?! Not necessarily for any students that might see a bit too much of their teacher, but for HER!

Ok, back to work. I apologize for my overuse of exclamation marks; I’m just so darn excited! 20 pounds! And that’s ’cause we haven’t even started our exercise regime yet!

up .5 from last week, but the other day I was actually down 1 from last week. Decided that I have to try harder to not stray from plan, even for a nibble. Although I’ve been warned not to weigh at night as well as morning, I just can’t help myself, and am encouraged that even at night, I’m still much less than when I began three weeks ago.

I’m thankful for second chances, my crazy puppy, my husband, and my family and friends who are always there for me, even when I forget. I’m thankful for a changed outlook on many areas in my life, for the chance to always do better, and to live in a country where I have to choose NOT to eat too much or the wrong things. Many blessings to you all for a Happy Thanksgiving!

    Down 3!

Work has been very stressful. We have a field trip tomorrow and Family Night tonight and we had to change our theme at the last minute. That meant lots of time not focused on instruction, which makes me feel like a bad teacher; it doesn’t help that the stress makes me more moody than usual. Oh, and then our principal decided Saturday that she wanted all the students’ names printed on the program. Good thing I type fast and was able to type out all 300 names in less than two hours!

All that to say, I stayed on plan and even lost 3 pounds despite the stress! Yay me!

  15. I was so busy reading everyone else’s weigh-ins that I almost forgot to post my own.
I am 263 which is exactly the same as last week.
Next week I will be in a different and using different scales so I have no idea what I’ll be!

    Comment by Debs — November 12, 2007 @ 12:31 pm |Edit This

  16. Hello I think I have managed to change it to me and not Debs. Next week I won’t have to bother as she will be somewhere else entirely. I may miss her just a bit you know.

Anyway today at 167.2 about the same, still just below goal (168) so holding steady.
I really think my tastes have changed over the last year. At the social on Wednesday I did have a piece of desert but I was very choosy, some things just seemed too sweet to tempt me. And when I had eaten it I realised that actually it wasn’t that great - I could have lived without it. That is a real surprise to me.

Well done to all you losers (doesn’t sound quite right that - I mean it in the nicest way!). O I actually had some exercise today. Debs was borrowing my car (hers has gone to live in Cambridge with her sister for the next few months) so had a 30 minute walk between schools at lunch time. It was a beautiful day for a walk and made me feel very virtuous.

Although yesterday was a good day for the SBC, Saturday was not. We joined 4 other couples in starting our first Supper Club. We will rotate around to each other’s house about every 2 months, the host makes the main dish and the rest of us each brings one of the courses. Saturday’s Supper Club Kick-off theme was British and it was Oh So Yummy! I need to learn how to politely eat only enough and not go overboard. Oy! Thank goodness the next one isn’t until January.

Up one pound. I’m gaining at slow rate. I need to work a little harder this week; I know if I set my mind to it I can gain at least 3-5 pounds in the next 7 days.

    Argh! I’m eating too much.

NOvember

marv-mon-weigh-in.jpgWhat is a vember anyway - and why must we say it nay? I’m just wondering….

Good Morning and welcome to the final sixth of 2007!!! Just think - you have the chance to greet 2008 at least 10 pounds lighter than you are now! That’s pretty cool! Anyway, Weigh In, tell me what vember should mean, and then go hit the check in post for the first day of the fabulous Shoebox Challenge!

  1. YAYAYAY! I like weigh-ins this week ;-)
    Well last week I was 269.4. This week I am 263 :-)
That’s down 6.4 people. That’s so exciting. I have been so aware of what I’ve actually put in my mouth and it’s really paid off!
This week I plan to keep on phase one, but to begin to add in fruit. And also pack and stuff and be excited and try not to panic!

    Comment by Debs — November 5, 2007 @ 6:14 am |Edit This

  2. Ok, it looks in my last comment like I have lost 6.4 people. Actually, I have lost 6.4 pounds and got over excited about telling all you people  !

Yeah people…let this be a lesson to you what cheating and eating a couple pieces of pizza can do to you. Particularly if you are prone to retaining water. I worked my bum this week to…until last night and my fat mind said, “Oh, there’s a new challenge tomorrow. Let’s have pizza tonight. It’s one of those evenings Jeff where I just feel like snuggling down.” SO, does anyone have any ideas what eat when your having one of those evenings where you just feel like tucking in to your living room with your family and throwing a blanket over you and eventually having a cup of hot chocolate? No I didn’t have any of that.
Alright, I’m with Debs this week. It’s back to Phase 1.

  4. 216/179/185.5 - I am down 6.5 lbs from my last weigh-in (keep in mind that was over 4 weeks ago) - but it’s actually 9.5 lbs down from where I hit my highest and decided to go back to SB Phase 1. But…

    I’M IN THE 170’s!!

I think I could have lost more as it was originally coming off at a rate of 1/2 lb per day, but I started to eat less and less and then start working out HARD. Well, there went the metabolic momentum - skreeeech! So I’m using a Debs-tactic and starting today. I have to make sure I do not skip any meals or snacks and continue to stay on plan.

    Oh, and YIPPEE to Debs!

  5. Ok Tami, I let off bugging you towards the end of the week, and I apologise. But I will be right back to it this week because I love you :-)
Most of that has gotta be water, so make sure you drink plenty today, and get right back on the south beach wagon!

Down 1.2. I was down a little more earlier in the week, but ah well, down is down. Sticking to the Beach, mostly, and sticking to my plan of going to the gym three times a week and working out as hard as I can for an hour or so. Onwards and downwards.

Up 2.2. Blah! I overdid the good carbs.

I’m begrudgingly going back to Phase I. My friend Melissa wants to, plus my parents are starting today! You can say a prayer for my dad — he’s a diabetic who’s majorly addicted to carbs and is home alone since mom’s back at work. I fixed his lunch and snacks, so hopefully he’ll stick with it.

There’s also a couple of teachers here who are starting South Beach because they’ve seen the difference in Melissa and me. How awesome is that?!

  14. Ok, you are not going to believe this, but I am down 7 pounds this week! I know it sounds like WAY too much to lose but I ate…a lot. I found that if I eat a lot of veggies then I lose a lot more. I have been eating like crazy!!! Keep in mind that I gained 3 pounds last week, so really I just lost 4 after getting rid of those pesky pounds.

    Great job everybody!

  17. Boo– (short for Debbie, Bird’s sis :-) )
I’m praying for ya, girl…you know, the cheesecake was one of those things I could never quite handle without gaining…I just couldn’t stick to one serving! Don’t know if that was one of the culprits or not.

But I am thinking maybe we need to do the pumpkin cheesecake from Kalyn’s Kitchen for Thanksgiving…you interested in tackling it? You have proven to be a superb cheesecake maker! ;-)

You’ll lose the 2 and more this week on phase 1, I’ll bet. I’m rooting for you!!!

  18. 239.8/214/207 (stg for Thanksgiving)
    Down 1.4

Not sure that I’ll get to my STG by Thanksgiving, but I’m going in the right direction. I’ll needs lots of willpower these next 2 weeks to stick to plan, because the week of Thansgiving we’ll be at my in-laws and unhealthy foods will be in full force. My goal during the week of Thanksgiving is to maintain!!!

Wow Nikki, 7lbs! That’s awesome! What kind of veggies are you eating? I have been so so so bad about eating veggies lately. I’ve hardly been getting any veggies in. :(

  19. Debs, thanks for the encouragement and prayers! We surely do need them!

Brandi, yeah, I didn’t think about that. But I was good . . . if you call only having 3 pieces over 3 days good . . . it is for me! And I used the cream cheese with less fat. I dunno. I’m not too worried about it, though. And I’ll look up the pumpkin recipe and see what I can do. It sounds yummy!!

  21. Asparagus is my new friend. I always hated it because I hate the way my mom makes it. Now I love it!!! I eat that twice a day and broccoli. I try not to do too many carrots though I love em! But I will eat whatever is in the house. I just try to eat as much of that as possible. It seems to cut the cravings a bit.

    Comment by Nikki — November 5, 2007 @ 12:46 pm |Edit This

  22. Tami- do you get the same retention if you eat one of the frozen S. Beach pizzas? I tried buying one of those and a frozen pizza, and my husband and kids would finish the frozen pizza so it was forced portion control for me!

    216/195/150

I’m down maybe 1 pound since the last weigh in. That’s like three weeks! Too many good carbs and too many cheats.

  23. Christy,
I honestly haven’t tried it. I want to get through phase 1 and then try a whole wheat crust and some other goodies on top as our Friday “treat” but staying within the parameters of phase 2.

  27. 241.8. Up 1/2 a lb, I think. I’m not happy about it.

I’m sick, guy and gals. It’s a viral crud thing, not really all that terrible, but I keep coughing. and I’ve been coughing hard enough that I seem to have pulled something and OUCH. But I’m getting better now.

I managed to do the Curvivor contest at Curves successfully - went 3x a week for 6 weeks straight. I’m pleased to have done that much at least. I have been walking 2x a week as well. Slow - but getting quicker.

time to work on food again. It’s been hard this past week - R3 learned the sign for candy and keeps asking :-) . I am supposed to “hop to it” when he asks for reasonable things - and a few pieces of candy isn’t going to hurt him in the long run and it’s certainly helping to get the point across that these signs mean actual Things!

but then I want the candy too :-( . Mostly managing to be the adult and say no to myself, but ow, it’s hard!

  29. Oh Tracy, hang in there friend. Yes you are my friend whether you want it or not! You can resist the candy. You can resist the candy, You can resist the candy. I have the worst sweet tooth ever and for me I have to have none or I will have all. I do mean all. I have been known for eating more than you can imagine. You can so do this. Just don’t be too hard on yourself. Food is so much harder than most addictions because he HAVE to have it.
