  5. …not to mention that faint sulphur smell… ;)

We had church dinner today and I did good until I got to the Berry Torte - I made it so it is my own fault… Well, it did have fruit in it. (and a bit of sugar and white flour and butter…) but it was so good and I had a tiny sliver of it with coffee. I make it for church dinner so I won’t eat the whole thing myself… :D

Stand up straight young lady! (Lady Laura)

I have been doing a lot of power walking this week which in itself is nothing new. Except for the frequency–6 days this week! (Ah, Spring, how I do love thee) This time around I have been really concentrating on my posture and keeping my arms a’swinging. Let me tell ya, it has made all the difference in the world!

I feel it in my abs, back, and arms as well as my, uh.. lower regions. I do find it hard to maintain at times, especially on the steep inclines; I find myself all slouchy and when I remember to stand up straight and pull in my core, the going is easier as I have more power behind my movements. I hope against hope that keeping a strong posture will become habit, but if not, I am thinking about investing in a good whalebone corset for my workouts. Wouldn’t that be cute?
All that to say, form is muy importante. Mucho! :)

  1. Oh but Laura, if you get the whale-bone corset you have to get some of the beautiful costumes to go with it. Wouldn’t that make an interesting workout outfit!

The joys of spam (Debs)

Sorry, I haven’t rediscovered a taste for that pink stuff we used to be served for school dinners, instead I want to share with you one of the many spam emails we recieve on a daily basis. My Mum (Elly) is treasurer for a local charity, and the email address for the charity is on their webpage. All their emails come through to us and luckily we have very good anti-virus protection! Probably about once a week we get a real email, but the majority of the emails we get are spam.

We get a large number of money laundering type ones ‘we have discovered a bank account in Nigeria that has not been touched for over twenty years, and we want you to help us claim that money… blah blah blah‘, only in much worse English. But today we had one advertising a weightloss product. It made me laugh so much I just had to share some of it with you. (I have replaced the product name with ***)

Do you know excessive body kilograms kill very much people around the world? Or, maybe, you got no will to resist a siege of your pernicious eating habits. If it sounds familiar, then we got something for your consideration! Here you may see what people say to us on this product:

“This is a great thing! Instead of always glutting myself with food and watching TV continually I became rather more interested in exercise. *** made me stride on confidently.” Victoria K., New York

“I tried some passive weight losing, but with no result. I could not restrain my ravenous appetite. Once I was told about *** the media by and I was really effected at the information. I had tried taking it, and my wife said I’m not more a weighty man now, 5 months later.” Mike Brown, Bellevue WA

*** helps you to understand you got no such great need for the constant eating. It raises your spirit, provides you with additional energy, and attacks needless kilos. All thanks to its mighty newly-elaborated formula!!

Well there you have it. Who could possibly fail to resist that product?!?!

On the Menu? (Blest)

easterdinner.jpg

So…. Next Sunday is Easter! Can you believe it? It’s coming up so fast!  And although Easter is not quite as calorically hazardous as the winter triumverate of temptation (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s - to be specific), there is still that tradition of feasting to face.

So whatcha cooking?  Or where are you going?  Do Peeps serenade you with their gooey song?  Are you weak in the knees at the sight of a Cadbury egg?  Do tell?  And if you have some great healthy Easter recipes, please share!

  1. Peeps and Cadbury Eggs do not tempt me in the least. But Hot Cross Buns, ham, trifles and cake do. I’m not sure what we will be eating. We’re hanging out with friends.

  2. Oooooh. Potluck for me. I must be strong!!! And bring something healthy myself! :D

  3. Peeps are disgusting to me. But Cadbury Caramel Eggs? Love ‘em!

We are having an Easter brunch at church and that will be the only unusual eating activity of the day. In other words, we’ll not be having a feast for lunch or dinner. Then, just a quiet afternoon at home, as far as I know.

    Comment by lady laura — March 31, 2007 @ 9:04 am

  4. I ADORE CADBURY EGGS!!!!!!!!!! PEEPS ARE OF THE DEVIL!!!!!!!!! LOL I get one Cadbury egg and ONLY one every year (we discovered the mini version last year and I only had ONE of those instead) and then I am good for one more year. I eat it VERY slowly and savor it. It is too sweet to eat more than one for me anyway… I don’t know if we will even buy any this year. We have had MIL do the eggs for the past few years at her house and the kids get one egg with jelly beans and malted robin eggs and such. None of that is tempting to me.

We will be having lunch at MIL’s though and I am in charge of cooking the leg of lamb, challah (my whole wheat version) and tabouli (bulghur wheat salad - which is EXCELLENT for you, btw…) and maybe some falafel (garbanzo/tahini vegetarian style meatballs) this year. I know there will be a dessert and some other stuff but nothing too temptingly bad. We tend to do good stuff with Dan, his dad and mom and others being of the High BP and heart disease persuasion in recent years.

    Comment by Leann — March 31, 2007 @ 2:18 pm

  5. Oh yes…I know mini cadbury eggs like you would not believe. They are oh so sweet BUT I love it…I could live off of those! Ok, maybe not, but close…ha!

We’re heading to an Easter brunch buffet at the Lake with some friends and my brother. We did this last year and even though I’m not one for buffets, this one was awesome. So not good for you. So I guess I’m going to have to be extra good before and after and maybe get some extra workouts in to make up for that…and practice self control too I guess. :) ~

    Comment by Cristina — March 31, 2007 @ 7:30 pm

  6. What are Peeps?
I usually get lots of lovely fairly traded dark chocolate and some Cadbury’s creme eggs. In the past these haven’t lasted very long, but these days I’m good at eating chocolate little bit by little bit and savouring every bite. Don’t know what I’m having for lunch on Easter day though. I think it depends on whether I stay in Cambridge or go home to my parents’ in London?

    Comment by Bekki — April 2, 2007 @ 2:20 am

  7. My fav Easter candy has been the Reese’s peanut butter eggs for as long as I can remember. None this year by my choice :-) I love them so much, though, that just typing about them feels like cheating….

We will be having a big family gathering. I usually bring about three dishes so I will have to make them all “good” so we will have something to eat! I will no doubt get some flack because I am always the one to bring mac n cheese, banana pudding, etc….oh well!

I am thinking about roasting a turkey breast and making the spicy cauliflower. As far as dessert, that will be a toughie. I have to make a gluten-free, dairy-free dessert because my son is on a special diet and so it will have to be something that is not SB-friendly….a little torturous for me, but if I can bake homemade bread without eating any, I can do ANYTHING! ;-)

  8. This is my very first Easter EVER without my family (Mom, Dad, brothers, sisters and all their families). I don’t think I will eat anything - too sad. :(

Ups & Downs (Bird)

I haven’t gotten any official, dang-you’re-gittin’-skinny type SPUNKs yet. A few people at work know about my diet and they’ve mentioned that they can tell that I’m losing weight, but to me that’s not a full-fledged SPUNK just yet. I’ll get there, probably next week. :-)

Just two days ago, an older gal at work (a bit chunky in her own right) offered me some sweets. I politely declined and she said, “Why?” Just then her daughter, who’s also an employee, said, “He’s on a diet.” The chunky mom then looked at me and said, “Who’s gonna’ believe you?”

There was sort of a language barrier, because they’re from another country and not native English speakers, but I think the gist of her point was that I’m such a lard who’s going to actually believe or think I’d lose weight? She was sort of saying, “Come on, eat it, you won’t ever lose weight anyway. Admit it and eat!” I thought, “Get behind me, Satan!”

Later that same day, a new employee from a Northern State was talking to other employees about regional accents. I queried, “Do I sound like I have a Texas accent?” He looked at me and said, “No, you sound like a fat Mexican.”

Now this guy is supposedly a Christian, but he’s young and probably not-too-bright. I guess most people don’t understand how offensive some things they say can actually be when they hit other peoples’ ears.

Instead of letting those setbacks get to me, I allowed them to encourage me to press on. I’ve got to shed these LBs and it’s going to be sweet victory when I’m dropping pounds and the same people are wondering how the heck I’m doing it.

I can’t wait!

Me again (Tami)

In case any of you didn’t hear it in the title, there is a big sigh up there.  Guys, could y’all keep this family in your prayers.  My little man (2 yrs) now has rotavirus.  It came on suddenly today (just like Emma last week).  He is currently drinking and that is a state we’d like to keep him in.  I will be sparse.

Thanks.

Busy - please pray! (Bekki)

Please can you pray for me this weekend. I’m working at a weekend conference, running around doing admin things and filming all the sessions.

I’m a little stressed out that I’ve not had a hand in choosing the menus and therefore don’t have a say in what we’ll get given for meals. On the other hand, I can choose what I eat from what’s on offer and I’ve got a supply of good snacks. Pray that I’ll work well, make good food choices and that all goes well.loan 800 san bernadino cas atv 4×4 motorcycle loanadministrators processor 215 loanvintage loans pamphlet gi 1954 vaquicken party anniversary 20th loanamount 2003 loan jumboexperience loan abacusloan chapter 13 bankruptcyMap

The Eagle-ette Has Landed (Brandi)

I am so excited to be an official member of the coolest weight-loss site on the planet! My name is Brandi and I live in beautiful Waco, TX with my wonderful husband, Bird and my 3 adorable children Nathan-7, Daniel-6, and Abigail-3. I have been a committed Christian since the age of 14 and love growing closer and closer to the Lord. He truly is my all in all and I love Him!

I (mostly) stay at home and homeschool my children and LOVE it. I say “mostly” because a few hours a week I work as a behavior therapist with children with Autism utilizing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Besides God and my family, Autism is my greatest interest. I have been working with children with Autism for over 14 years and find it truly intriguing and rewarding. And to make it a bit more personal, we realized about a year or so ago that our oldest son, Nathan, has Asperger Syndrome which has a lot of characteristics in common with high-functioning Autism. So that puts a whole new spin on things! Thankfully, with God’s help and direction, we are seeing improvement in Nathan little by little.

I have tried almost every diet out there at one time or another and am currently doing South Beach with my dear hubby. I really like it a lot (especially how much healthier I am eating…and I already thought I was a healthy eater!) and am looking forward to getting to my pre-pregnancy size for the first time in 8 years!

Ummmmm...what Debs said... (Leann)

Yeah, we are a little swamped here. There has been a bit of medical upheaval with Dan the man in our home. There are details at the link if you are interested. I had a bit of a breakdown moment yesterday. Prayers are totally appreciated. He has come to the realization that he has to do something or die. I know, harsh… but he is finally serious about getting down the pounds. He said to me… “Did you know I am in the obese catagory? I have to lose 5 more pound just to be overweight.” He is a bit depressed about that and about the number he has to be to be healthy again. When he gets through with this he will be the same as the day I married my darling man. We are back on the DASH diet for his blood pressure now - his choice. I am so proud of him!!! Now, if I could get my preacher man to blog like Bird… ;) *whispers* (it ain’ta happenin’ and I know it)
Welcome aboard Brandi and Bird!!! We are delighted to have you both… :)

  2. praying, Leann. I know what it is like to watch my man not getting a handle on something. Though in our case, Norvasc has brought down his BP. But he just keeps gaining and now there are other things. sigh. I may be the very obese one, but relatively speaking, I’m healthier than he is.

but this is about you and YOUR man - and I am adding you to the list on my bulletin board.

The Eagle Has Landed (Bird)

Yes. I’m a big, hairy, smelly dude and I’m now a posting member here at good old OWOA. Sorry if the transition may be hard for some of you gals, but never you fear, I won’t be asking for any digits or passing any “do-you-like-me?-yes-no-or-maybe” notes because I’m a married man and my lovely, thin, beautiful wife, Brandi, will be joining me in this OWOA adventure. I’d like to thank everyone for the warm welcome you’ve given us already. We feel the love around here. :-)

In addition to OWOA, I blog over at Thinklings and Brandi and I both blog with Blest over at ASKIDSARECOOL.com. We’re both evangelical Christians, saved by the power and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

My mission is to lose 70 pounds and I’ve got a good start so far. I’ve dropped about 14 pounds on Southbeach the past 2.5 weeks and I’m ready to shed the remainder as soon as possible.

I’m sure you’ll learn tons of new factoids about me and Brandi in the days and months to come. Hopefully we’ll both be able to encourage you all, and maybe even make you laugh, while we get rid of our “fattys.”

Oh, yeah, Brandi said these things are better with a photo so now, for your entertainment, I offer you this picture of a monkey smoking a pipe … er … me:

We’ve got a local tobacconist here who’s pretty good. They sell pipes, tobacco, cigars and fine coffee and teas. Just walking into that place is a delight for the nose.

    Where are y’all from?

  12. Ok, Tami, I’m smoking it now and it’s a coooool smoke. It smokes like icecubes. ;-)I like it!

  13. Oh, yeah, Tami, if you all ever want me to buy something from my place here and ship it to y’all let me know. I think all of their aromatic tobaccos are like $3 an ounce. And remember, smoking a pipe is always calorie free!

Hello! (Debs)

Ladies and Gentleman, this is just a short interuption to your usual broadcast to inform you that I am alive, just really really busy and tired.

Life has seemed extra extra busy these past couple of weeks, however an end (sort of) is in sight. Tomorrow at 2.30pm I school breaks up for two weeks for the Easter hoildays. However, I will still be taking care of the little one, and the two boys I usually care for on a Wednesday and haven’t yet created internet names for. That’ll be on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays in both weeks, and I’ve got millions on things I need to do on the other days, but still, it’s a holiday of sorts…! I can’t wait :-)

  1. We have Spring Break beginning Saturday as well. But only one week off! I wish it were two!

Take it easy and enjoy yourself. I’m planning to garden and houseclean! Maybe a trip to the park and possibly the zoo…we’ll see.

Review ~ Podfitness (Blest)

Now of course, it is probably no surprise to you when I say that I LOVE Podfitness.  But what may surprise you is that Podfitness likes US!  I got an email from them saying that they enjoy our website, and would I please officially review their product?  So of course I said “Sure!!”

If you don’t already know Podfitness is a website which allows you to mix your own music with workouts designed by well-known professional trainers.  There are over eighty trainers to choose from as well as a variety of workout options.  You select a trainer, select an exercise, select your music, and hit mix.  In just a few minutes, your new custom workout is sitting in your iTunes, ready to be downloaded to your iPod!  Coolness!

There are other options to be explored as well, which allow you an even greater degree of customization.  You can set your workouts to “Home” or “Gym”, and tell Podfitness what equipment you have access to.  I, for example, have hand weights, a stationary bike, a treadmill, and stairs.  With those options checked, Podfitness “knows” what options to use in my workouts!  There is also a dial for controlling workout intensity, and a feedback section where you can rate your workouts and tell Podfitness what exercises you don’t want to reappear in your workouts.

The best feature to me, hands down, is the ability to have workouts set to the music Ilove.  I firmly belive that music is absolutely essential to a successful workout.  Without it, I can’t go ten minutes! With it….who knows what can happen!

Recent research shows music, often used in healing, can actually affect brain wave patterns. It can definitely get one energized. Music can oftentimes put you in a more positive mood (often an outcome of exercise in general), which is also beneficial to your health. The more fast-paced the music is, the more adrenaline you might experience. ~Liz Noelcke, Sparkpeople

Of course, the music that motivates one person to exercise may not work for another.  For example, I love working out to Rockapella!  The beats are not superfast, but the harmonies are incredible and the beat makes me happy!  I’ll keep pushing on through all sorts of tiredness because I want to hear the next song.  I also enjoy sweating to high-energy Christian pop like the Newsboys.  Someone else may prefer Metallica, or Bob Marley, or Sarah Brightman…who knows?  The beauty of Podfitness is that you can have your workout with the music that works for you! The only caveat is that the software doesn’t work with music that you have downloaded through iTunes.  (something to do with file format issues) However, if you burn your music to cd and then import it back into iTunes from the cd - it will work.  Minor hassle, but worth it to get the perfect tunes for your workout!

Of course, having access to professional trainers is no small advantage either!  The workouts I have downloaded from trainers like Kathy Smith, Kathy Kaehler, Michael George, and Chris Klughe have all pushed me and stretched me (literally) far beyond what I was doing on my own.  After eight months of working out at home,  I was getting a little complacent…and a LOT bored. Podfitness has fixed that.  Having a friendly and encouraging voice in my ear telling me to up my intensity, tighten my abs, and push harder…   It helps like you wouldn’t believe!

I hate to be bored…and Podfitness definitely fights boredom. I can mix up the music, change out the trainers, pick a new exercise…  all with a few clicks while I drink my morning coffee!  It’s awesome!

What else can I tell you?  I really love this service!  If they had a t-shirt, I would have bought one already!  Even their customer service people are great. I’ve had to call a few times over minor issues, most related to my making sure I really was entered into theNational Fitness Challenge - and the guys on the phone have been very pleasant and helpful.  Oh - and speaking of the Challenge, it’s not too late to sign up! You have until April 29th to start your 12 week run for the prize!

  1. Thanks for the review. Just today I was little bummed that my gym’s fitness challenge is over (names will be drawn for prizes next week) and wondering what I should do next. I’ve been going a little easy on the workouts this week. I’ll have to check out this Podfittness virus that has infected you. ;-)

  2. So, do they speed up or slow down the beat of the music you choose to match their workout? I’m trying to envision this…

    Comment by Brandi — March 29, 2007 @ 2:27 pm

  3. No. They don’t mess with your music except that the volume of the music decreases while the trainer is talking. You just need to choose your music pretty well to have a tempo that will work. I tend to just pic stuff that is medium to medium high in speed throughout for cardio, medium for toning work, and slow- of course- for stretching workouts.

Good quote (Jana)

I get an email every day from The Organizer Lady, and often she has quotes in there that apply equally well to weight loss as to organizing your house.  I thought today’s was really good:

Change is a process, not an event.

Real change can only happen slowly. Make progress, solidify your
gain [or loss in our case], make more progress. Participate in the process. The change will come.

Water, water everywhere... (Blest)

But what are you drinking?  I was linking along and found this article on beverage choices and hazards via this blog

Check this out:

About 21 percent of calories consumed by Americans over the age of 2 come from beverages, predominantly soft drinks and fruit drinks with added sugars, the panel said in its report. There has been a huge increase in sugar-sweetened drinks in recent decades, primarily at the expense of milk, which has clear nutritional benefits. The calories from these sugary drinks account for half the rise in caloric intake by Americans since the late 1970s.

21 percent?! WOW.  I know that before my grand lifestyle overhaul, I was knocking back 7-10 cans of Pepsi a week and a Cafe Mocha or two.  (That’s probably about 2000 extra calories a week.)  Now, my only caloric beverage is 1% milk.  I drink water and black coffee the rest of the time.

I found this paragraph interesting:

But calories from sweet drinks are not the only problem. The other matter cited by the panel, in its report in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, is that beverages have “weak satiety properties” — they do little or nothing to curb your appetite — and people do not compensate for the calories they drink by eating less.

See now, that is the problem with working sweet drinks into your calorie choices for the day. You get nothing from them but the taste! The article goes on to list many health risks that have been associated with different drinks.  However, I am pleased to say that several paragraphs are devoted to the virtues of caffeine.    And of course, milk does a body good.

Speaking of milk…I forgot to mention in my checklist the other day that studies have shown that your body needs to be getting its calcium to lose weight effectively.  Plus, women who are losing weight can be losing bone mass if they aren’t getting their calcium.  So take a quick break from the water for a quick glass of moo juice!  And check your supplements!

Cheers!

  1. A note on the calcium . . .

I’ve seen that several of you are doing SB, so wanted to share that high-protein diets may impede calcium metabolism; people on high-protein diets need to make sure they are getting extra calcium.

In addition to helping with weight loss and bone mass, calcium also appears to improve insulin sensitivity, which is a good thing (expecially for Type 2 Diabetics and women with PCOS).

BUT, calcium is a tricky thing to get into your body. Your body can only take so much at a time, so taking a huge dose of it all at once does not mean your body can use it all.

Also, the easiest way for your body to get it in supplement form is in the gel caps–not the hard pills. So a small dose gel cap twice a day is better than a large dose once a day in the hard pill form.

Sorry my 2 cents is so long. :)

  2. I also had a pharmacist tell me that Tums were a great way to get calcium…

  3. Funny, I used to drink quite a lot of milk, and now I never do. On the other hand, I seem to eat a lot of dairy products these days, reduced fat cheese, yoghurt etc, so I think I’m probably still getting my calcium.

Sugary drinks on the other hand, I never touch now. There are several bottles of squash (how to describe squash? It’s sort of concentrated sweet fruity liquid stuff, you add water to drink it) sitting on the kitchen work top that I haven’t touched since starting South Beach. I should get rid of them since they’re probably undrinkable.

  4. […] Ok. So I know that I shouldn’t really be drinking soda (which I knew already, and also was reminded of from Blest’s post earlier this week). […]
