Pan-Tastic! (Blest)

I was reading Prevention awhile back, and there was an article spotlighting various healthy items a body might want to have around the house.  One that caught my eye was a grill pan.  Grilling indoors….hmmmm! See, I hate to be all chick-ish and stuff, but I have never learned to use the gas grill, and don’t really want to.  I’m accident prone, y’see.  I’m perfectly happy letting the grill be part of Man-Land.  But my man has been known to wander off, courtesy of Uncle Sam, and then what do I do?

A Foreman grill? Yes, I have one of those.  But it’s rather small…and Foremans have their limitations.  After all - can you do this on a Foreman?

Mmmmm. I’m hungry just looking at it.  The zucchini, by the way, was brushed with olive oil and sprinkled with salt and pepper - and was DELISH!  I’ve also grilled asparagus, mushrooms, peppers, steaks, chicken, and turkey burgers.  I love this thing!!!  I have to say too, that these past four weeks with my husband gone (VA for three weeks, home for 36 hours, and then off to Florida), the grill pan has been invaluable.  I could cook my entire healthy dinner on one pan! AND it goes in the dishwasher!  How cool is that!

  1. Hi Blest,

I love both your blogs! You’ve inspired me to start South Beach as well, and I’ve been on it for 5 weeks and have lost 13 pounds. Sheesh, the older I get the slower it comes off. My friends in menopause tell me it just gets worse…

Anyway, I guess I’m not totally following your post. What exactly is that thing? Does it just fit on a stove burner? How do you use it? I’d love some easy way to grill. The only thing I can do is broil, which is a pain you-know-where, because it’s so cumbersome to wrap the entire thing with foil (to avoid having to wash it), so I basically never use it.

    Thanks for any info!

  2. Hi Caroline! Thanks and Congratulations!!! What do you mean slow?! 13 pounds in five weeks is GREAT! You are welcome to start weighing in with us, by the way. We do weigh-ins on Mondays.

The pan goes right on top of the stove burner - just like a skillet. Isn’t that cool?!

  3. That looks sooo good! I have a big ole GF grill, but I hardly ever use it. I find it to be a pain to clean. But, you have inspired me to try again so I can have me some of that yumminess!

  4. I had a GF a while back. Got sick of cleaning it (it didn’t have removable grill plates) - the last time I used it I accidentally burned some chicken on it….I scraped and scraped and then pitched it in the trash. I did like it though. I agree it was really too small even at the time (we had two small kids and another on the way).

It goes right on the burner? Now that’s my kind of grill!! Where did you find it? How much? Details woman - I need me one of them thare thinga.ma.jigs.

  5. It’s a Circulon. I got it at Kohl’s. I think it retails for $30 - but you know Kohl’s. Everything is ALWAYS on sale. So I actually paid, I think, $20 for it.

    Worth. Every. Penny.

  7. I’ve been thinking about one of those. It’s a toss up between a panini grill and that. Some brands come with a press that can be heated up as well. You may have pushed me over the edge to go get one. My small kitchen can only handle so many gadgets.

  8. I have one of those!! I got it as a wedding gift and it’s still under the cabinet waiting for me to figure out how to use it! Can you use it for any recipe that is really meant for a grill? I’m getting reinspired to get it out!

  9. I don’t see why you couldn’t, Stephanie! I’m using mine for grilled Mahi Mahi and asparagus tonight. Plus I’ll be roasting some brussels sprouts…. Mmmmmmm.

  10. Does your husband come back from these tours of duty and then trip out on how much weight you’ve lost since he’s been gone?

    Comment by Bird — March 22, 2007 @ 5:22 pm

  11. Well now….see…One has to know my husband. He doesn’t trip out about ANYTHING. You can not imagine a man more - uh- emotionally consistent. (I call him Robbie the Robot - but I say it with love!  ) He is quietly pleased. He doesn’t say much.

But I know he likes it. I think what he likes the most is that now I’m interested in stuff he’s interested in. I can babble about obliques and quads and discuss the finer points of icing knees. We talk about fuel for muscle building. I get him to teach me different weight lifting exercises. It’s cool. After all, Marines are really into physical fitness. He’s running a Marathon on Sunday!

Now if he would just develop a sudden interest in close-knit harmonies, cool key changes, and the finer points of breath support…
