Yes. I know I'm obsessed. (Blest)

I just thought I would get that statement out of the way.

I’m sitting here on the couch, having just gotten my vegetables in a whole new way. I had frozen lima beans on one knee, and frozen edamame on the other.  Sigh.  I tried my bike for a whopping two minutes today….Bad. Idea.  So I’m trying very hard to accept that I’m truly out of commission for the next who-knows-how-many days…except for arm and ab workouts, of course.

Now. Because I am totally obsessed, not to mention extremely paranoid about going “backwards”…and because I’m trapped on the couch with my laptop (to some extent. I canwalk - it just seems prudent to be off my feet as much as possible) I am spending some more quality time with the wonderful website known as Calorie Count.  After all, if I can’t move as much, I shouldn’t eat as much.  Don’t you agree?  So I went back andrecalculated my BMR with a much lower activity rate.  That gave me “Calories to Maintain”. I don’t want to maintain, so I’m aiming lower.  I went ahead and decided everything I’m eating today and plugged it in to Calorie Count.  I even put it enough detail that I could run an analysis of my diet. It’s pretty cool - check it out!

My calorie total is 1376, which is a few hundred lower than my BMR.  If I stay on track, I should be down a little next Monday.  One thing I found very interesting with this analysis was that almost 50% of my intake is composed of carbohydrates. That’s with having only 1/2 of what South Beach calls a carb serving.  If I had my allowed 3 servings… that percentage would be even higher.  I think this demonstrates what I have often observed. People are quite mistaken in thinking that South Beach is a “Low Carb” diet or “just like Atkins”.  We don’t just get carbs from grains, after all.  Carbs are in veggies, fruits, beans, dairy… pretty much in everything except a plain piece of meat!  I eat plenty of carbs. I just don’t eat a lot of grains.  Though I do usually eat more grains than I’m having today.  I usually have a grain at breakfast - today I had soy sausage.

Anyway…I mainly just wanted to show you that analysis feature. I thought it was cool.  And did you see? I got an

  1. Blest, all the text is coming out bold, from “My calorie count is…” downwards. Is there an unclosed tag or something somewhere that’s throwing everything off?

  2. Ok, so I know you already said it, but you ARE obsessed

Don’t you dare do anything with those legs for at least a week - we don’t want you to do permanent damage.
Lots of love, hugs and prayers :-)

  4. Take care of those knees!

SB just gets rid of the “bad” high-glycemic-index carbs, right? Potatoes, sugar, white flour, etc?

  8. Actually, Atkins does allow more carbs after the induction phase than most people realize. Below is a link to a little breakdown of the similarities and differences. Really, the major difference as far as what you are actually “allowed” to eat is the fat and “how” carbs are counted (not necessarily a difference in allowable amount). I’ve read both books and have known people who do and have done both plans - they are actually quite similar and after the first phase of both, I would consider them “moderate carb” not “low carb”. Of course, they’ve been labeled and will probably always be considered “low” by a majority of the population. I’m not sure they’ll ever shake that “stigma”.

And, to echo everyone else’s sentiment…you are definitely obsessed…although, being basically immobile would have my mind going a million miles an hour too lol.

  9. Thanks for that link Blair. That was interesting!

And I think I’m gonna have to write a post for my own site about the fact that I have finally come to terms with my own personality. All my life I’ve felt like a failure because of my all-or-nothing, achieve in obsessive spurts, ADD type makeup. But I’ve finally realized that I accomplish a TON when I am obsessed - and very little when I’m not.

I’ve decided to just be who I am. It’s working. And if I weren’t obsessed, there’s a lot of weight-loss related activities that I would probably forget all about.

  10. I tend to be an all-or-nothing gal myself so I can totally relate….and as far as I know I’m not ADD. I think it’s good that you’ve come to terms with yourself - this journey has a habit of changing people.
