Veggies Galore . . . I Hope (Bethany)

I’m getting ready to plant my first ever vegetable garden. I’m hoping to plant tomatoes, zucchini, squash, eggplant, and cucumbers. I’m twisting the arm politely soliciting the help of a friend who has been successful in his past gardening endeavors…and well, he’s my best friend, so he has to help. Or we can’t be friends anymore….

But anyway, I was curious, do any of you grow your own vegetables? What is easy? What is hard? Should I try anything else?

  1. We’ve planted a garden each of the last three years, and I am extremely bad with plants so if I can do it, you should have no problem.

Corn is pretty easy, and I’ve always had beans grow really well. Zucchini seems to be pretty hearty, too. In my particular garden, tomatoes go absolutely wild and take over half the garden, so I need to remember to plant them far away from everything else this year.

Things I couldn’t get to grow well were spinach, carrots, yellow squash, and cabbage. I had some carrots and squash, but not much, and absolutely none of the leafy vegetables. And we even put up a fence to keep the bunnies out.

Good luck! It’s a lot of work to start out, but then so much fun to see the veggies growing and then coming up with new ways to cook them!

  2. I would love to have a garden but haven’t had one since I was a kid (my parents used most of our backyard for all kinds of veggies and fruit too).

    Have fun!!

  3. Oh, I wish I could have a garden. You are so lucky! I love fresh green beans from the garden! And once, I had a green pepper from a garden and there is no comparison to grocery store peppers. The garden one was crisp and juicy. I almost started liking green peppers. Right now, I tolerate them.

  4. I’m just sure I commented on this yesterday. Hmmm…

What I said was that I have only done container gardening in the past and that the radishes were really easy and very tasty! I just planted them in a window box planter and voila! Much better than store-bought.

  5. Since I’m lurking (like always) I thought I’d throw in some input.

The easiest for me have always been tomato, corn, squash, zucchini, and cucumbers. Peppers seem to grow reasonably well too.

I have never been able to sprout carrots or broccoli. I think they just don’t like me. Really!

good luck. It’s wonderful to cook with things you’ve grown yourself and as a plus, gardening can be a good workout too!
