Freezer cooking today... (Blair)

…and likely tomorrow also.

I told you guys I don’t enjoy cooking so about once a month (sometimes longer) I spend a couple of days cooking up dinner entrees. So far I already have 5 in the freezer - woohoo. Anyway, just wanted to let you guys know where I’ll be for the next couple of days. I’ll pop in when I can (everyone needs breaks).

You guys rocked on weigh in! I’m excited to see so many coming face to face with that number….not letting it define who we are but seeing the reality of where we are. I see that some newbies have introduced themselves - can’t wait to “meetcha”.

Alright, back to the kitchen for me!

Rewards? (Lady Laura)

Since getting serious about this weight loss/healthy body thing, I have been having flashbacks to about 18 months ago. At that time I was at my thinnest point ever in my life. Even thinner than when I was in high school, those years when many seem to have been at their prime.

Background: I had always been a “thicker” girl, never knowing what life was like in single-digit clothing sizes, but always imagining that life was finer in a size 5 (or even 8) than it was in a size 12. Then about 6 years ago, I began to get bigger than I had ever been. There were lots of things going on in my life at the time, such as the final failed attempt at reconciliation with my ex-husband (and his almost immediate engagement to a “friend” of his), and looking back now, I can see that I was in a mild depression. It was a sad, sad day when I had nothing to wear that fit me (and was stone cold broke), and a friend offered me some of her old clothes. She neglected to tell me that they were plus-sized, and as I tried each piece on and it fit, I cried.

Though I had always taken care with my appearance, I began to let myself go. I rarely wore makeup, I hardly ever cared about my hair beyond its being clean, and I ate whatever, whenever I wanted; what was the point anyway? I wanted to be as invisible as I felt.

As I began to grow in Christ and to experience the joy that is found only in Him, things began to change almost imperceptibly. I was busy with new friends I met in women’s ministry, and when I began to lead small groups, I was busy with the study and preparation that required. My hands were filled with things besides donuts and M&Ms. Without my really noticing, the weight began to fall off and soon the “new” clothes didn’t fit anymore. Then the next size down didn’t fit, then the next, and so on. It was so slow(took about a year) and unpurposed; I was just busy living life. It seemed as if one day I woke up and was that size 6 I never thought I would ever be.

But. I was tired all the time, I was over-committed, I was not healthy, I was not strong. And even though I was “thin”, Prince Charming didn’t come, which I had secretly expected to happen if only I was thinner and more attractive. Something had to give; I had to back off from my busyness. I also had to quit smoking (a powerful stronghold in my life), which I was still doing in secrecy, and which brings me to my point: rewards.

When I began the process of quitting smoking, one of the things I began to do was pay attention to why I was wanting each individual cigarette. I noticed a pattern in when the desire was strongest and at what times of day I was most likely to smoke. Turns out, smoking was a “reward” for putting in a long day (I only smoked in the evenings), and was my guarantee of time alone and at rest as I only smoked in private, away from my son. As I began to consider that, I made a list of other things that would offer the same “payment” but did not involve killing myself with cigarettes and unhealthy modeling. I also got some ladies to pray for me and hold me accountable. It worked, and much more easily than I would have thought possible. (It will be two years in October since I was a smoker, by God’s grace.)

Since joining this group of wonderful, inspiring ladies, I find myself having to revisit those things I did in order to quit rewarding myself with cigarettes, but this time with an eye on my relationship with food and exercise. Some of my rewards have become food, others have become sedentary things like bonus blog-time, or a video. That getting to watch a video is a reward and tinkering in the garden is not, is all in how I look at it from the outset, as is baking (eating) cookies versus riding bikes with my son. In some ways, the rewards I found for myself were no better than what I was replacing. They were just hid themselves in a “better” package.

Just as a clean house is the natural reward for the work it takes to get it that way, and a closer relationship with the Lord is the natural reward for seeking after Him through prayer and reading His Word, making choices that please God and bless my family are a reward in themselves, and it is a lie that I have told myself that I need to add an artificial bonus. So this time around I am checking myself with each thought that I “deserve” this, and prayerfully considering what it best in that moment. Sometimes that may be having an ice cream with my son, but more often it will probably be tying on my walking shoes and taking a stroll with him; sometimes that will be staying up to read, post, or sew, other times it will be getting to bed early so as to have extra study time in the morning and more energy to face the new day. All the time it must be bathed in prayer.

  5. Great post. I remember that “I deserve” monster came up for me when I had three kids in three years and thought I “deserved” to be able to sleep! I had to die to my right to sleep. Now I need to die to my right to overeat. Why can I only learn one thing at a time?

    Comment by Carrie — July 31, 2006 @ 2:30 pm

  6. Laura, this is great, and sounds much like my own weight journey as well. I will add that because I was never that “perfect size 6″ in high school or college, I allowed myself to carry weight that I knew was extra on my small frame. I also lost weight by letting busyness substitute for eating, but not in an unhealthy way. I was also eating better.

I find that my discipline in my eating choices carries over to other things in my life. I’m an “all or nothing” kind of gal, but when I am disciplined about other things, like housekeeping, and quiet time, then the eating thing seems to sometimes be better, too.

Hi, I'm Andrea

Hi everybody!

My name is Andrea and I am so glad to finally be doing something about this weight thing. I have lived in denial the past few years, saying I will do something about this weight when I’m finished having kids. Well, my youngest is three so no more procrastinating!

My goals are:

1) Have more energy to keep up with the kids!

2) Feel better when I get dressed (clothes look like they are supposed to!)

3) Change the habits of our whole family so we all eat better/healthier.

Pretty logical, I suppose. I am terrible at self-discipline and I absolutely love to eat so this will be a challenge for me. I loved seeing the recipes that were posted. They sound delicious and good for you. That will be a huge help to me.

So, here we go girls! We can do it!

Water Goal

Ok, I’ve weighed in, and now that I know my weight I know I should drink apx. 110 ounces of water today. SO, I thought I would challenge y’all to try to hit your water goals today! So, if you want to do this with me, then post your goal of ounces below and then let us know if you met your goal!
FYI: water, juice, milk, and decaf tea count. However, you shouldn’t count your caffeine drinks in the total as they act as a diuretic! If your water tastes ‘treated’, lemon will get rid of the chlorine taste (and it’s good for you). AND, it uses more calories when your water is cold!

  1. I’m in! According to that calculator - I have to drink 140 ozs!! (I have to drink more, I think, due to living in a high altitude desert and drinking coffee)

    Comment by blestwithsons — July 31, 2006 @ 10:22 am

  2. I can’t get results from the calculator but I am going for 100 ozs a day.

    I better get drinking!

    Comment by Maria — July 31, 2006 @ 10:36 am

  3. My standard goal is somewhere between 64 and 128 oz./ day.

I actually don’t count beverages that include calories (or caffeine as you mentioned) toward my totals though.

Raising my glass!! I’ve already downed over 40 oz this morning :o )

  4. 165 ounces - and guess what? I’ve been naughty and haven’t had any yet.

Off I must run… to go guzzle up!

  5. I’m working on it. I’m at 64 oz but….I’d stay and post a longer comment, but gotta run and tee-tee…for the bazillionth time.

    Comment by AJ — July 31, 2006 @ 2:14 pm

  6. Ok I’ve lost count 3 times already how many glasses of water I’ve drank.

So - how do you all keep count?

Tomorrow - this is my plan… 1 gallon jug= 128 ounces. So once that gallon is gone - I will drink 2 more 16 ounce glasses and I’ll be set.

Shew - who wants to be that we all have the best complexions ever??!?!

    Comment by Kat — July 31, 2006 @ 3:29 pm

  7. I’m only at 60 ounces… only 1/2 weigh (ha ha) there. {{groan}} I think one of the benefits of all this water is ALL the exercise one gets from running to the bathroom all the time.

Hey, that’s an idea! If you have a two story house, only use the upstairs bathroom so you have to go up and down everytime you need to go! Obviously I live in a one-story! (hee hee)

About AJ

Morning Girls!

I’m so happy to be joining you on this blog! Losing weight surely is a pain in the patootie, esp for someone like me who prefers ice cream, instant gratification, and birthday cake! HOWEVER, yesterday afternoon I went shopping for some new clothes.

Enough said.

My goals in this are simple.

I no longer want to feel my boobs resting on my tummy. In Texas we live in a perpetual state of *hot* and I am tired of having to do the “tuck and drive” (when I tuck my shirt under my boobs while driving. Cuts down on the sweat) for comfort.

I want to feel good about myself! Energy! Motivation! Spontaneity!

I want to set an example for my girls.

Finally, I am done being consumed with what I think I’m supposed to look like. Laying this at the feet of the Father! Let’s see what happens.

But I guess I will anyway. But not tonight.

Of course, the pain serves another purpose just now. It reminds me why I want to lose weight. I want to be able to keep up with my family without ending up in pain!

Food for Thought (Lorri)

In church this morning, our pastor was talking about how our enjoyment of eating is God-given. Sometimes in my quests to lose weight, I view my desire to eat as a bad thing. I view it as a wild beast that must be restrained, locked away, lest it destroy me. But it doesn’t have to be that way!

God created us to enjoy the process of nourishing our bodies. That sweet tooth is there so that we’ll seek out the ripe peaches and berries. When I eat more of God’s cuisine, I find that it’s easier to stick with a healthy diet. It’s when I use that sweet tooth & other senses to eat over-processed foods that I find myself eating not for enjoyment, but for sheer mass consumption. Sure, the first few potato chips taste & smell wonderful, but after the fourth or fifth handful? Am I really enjoying them at that point in the way God intended us to enjoy food? Honestly, no. By that point it’s all about feeding the salty dragon.

For me, cooking from scratch is a way to enhance the pleasures of eating. I enjoy a meal more when I’ve made it myself. The meals that I just reheat in the microwave or empty from a plastic bag onto a cookie sheet just don’t have the same effect.

So my challenge to myself for the week is to search for the enjoyment of eating healthy, the way God intended it. I’ll be trying to ask myself when I’m eating, “Am I enjoying this?” If I’m not, I need to find out why.

Happy health!

  1. Good words, Lorri! Thanks!

Yeah…I’ve been pondering something similar in thinking about sweeteners and the whole “For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude…” thing. If we look at the foods God created - we see meat, vegetables, dairy and fruit…. And the Bible says “If you find honey, eat just enough. Too much of it and you will vomit.” I don’t think God intended us to live a life laden with sweets. (or excess salt for that matter)

    Comment by blestwithsons — July 30, 2006 @ 3:20 pm

  2. those are both excellent points. I have realized that a lot of my weight gain and reflux has been caused by enjoying food too much. By that I mean, eating larger portions and having seconds on foods I really like. That is a problem for two reasons, at least, I tend to like foods high in sugar and carbs, and I rush through my firsts to get to my seconds etc. I have been concentrating on learning to eat, and like, healthlier foods. And to slow down and enjoy the first normally sized portion.

Did somebody say icecream?

Well, have I got the answer for you. At my WW meeting on Monday evening I discovered these and they are oh so good! And if you are doing WW then they are only 0 points for 1. They are sweetened with Splenda, no fat, and 5g of fiber. Have you ever heard of ice cream being high in fiber? So, here it is…Blue Bunny…Health Smart…Vanilla Fudge Bars. Mmmm good! Now remember, if you have more than 1, it does not mean that it is still 0 points, you will have to recalculate! They are a nice, satisfying size. Oh BTW, I found mine at WalMart.

    Comment by Carrie — July 29, 2006 @ 10:23 pm

  4. I don’t know much except that it’s made from sugar and if you eat too much of it you can experience some digestive repurcussions. I don’t like artificial stuff, myself. But I did pick up a small box of splenda for some of the recipes in the SB plan. I figure my weight is going to kill me before a few teaspoons of Splenda will. ;-)

I’ll poke around though and see what I can find.

Weekends (Carrie)

I don’t have (much) trouble sticking to my points allowance on weekdays. Something about the nromal routine and schedule makes it relatively easy. But then the weekend hits…

What is it about Friday night that makes me think I deserve to celebrate? And why do I always associate celebration with food? Actually, I know why. I come by it naturally. When I was growing up, my mom went on a health food kick. Rice and beans was a frequent dinner dish - the main course, no less. We took herbal supplements by the handful and I still shudder when I think about the parsley tea she forced us to drink for urinary tract health!

My dad was pretty understanding, but he is a meat-and-potatoes kind of guy. It wasn’t easy. And the no sugar allowed thing was a big struggle. After a long time of feeling completely deprived (and lots of sneaking candy at friend’s houses and at school), Mom came up with a compromise: Friday Night Junk Food Nights. This was my dad’s night to say what goes. And since Dad loves any form of sweets, we had a good time. I won’t regale you with tales of the amount of junk my dad and my sisters and I would consume, wouldn’t want to tempt anyone. ~wink~

I don’t think a little bit of junk every once in a while is a bad thing. But we didn’t know how to do moderation. For my kids, I’ve tried to maintain a healthy menu, but I do allow them small portions of dessert a couple times a week. They think they’re terribly deprived, to which I reply, “When I was your age…”

Anyhow, Friday night hits and I need ice cream. Or at least I think I do.

Then Saturday morning dawns, when my husband likes to either cook a huge breakfast of eggs, bacon, and chocolate pancakes - or run to McDonald’s for an egg mcmuffin. It’s like a mine field, ladies!

So I guess what I’m saying is: help! I need extra prayer for the weekends. I failed miserably last night. But I’m pulling myself up by my sandal straps and getting right back on that horse. Cause it’s worth it. Right?

  1. (((Carrie))) Weekends can be a minefield, that’s for sure. The best I ever did on weekends was when I had a Saturday weigh-in with Weight Watchers. I would behave on Friday night b/c I knew I had to weigh in on Saturday morning, and then I would generally be good on Saturday because I would be pumped from the meeting … of course at the time I was single and didn’t have a husband who asked me to dish him up ice cream.

Hang in there! I’m not sure what I’ll do when our normal Friday night pizza happens next week. I was blessed with a week off b/c my husband had a couple wisdom teeth removed and couldn’t chew it … hence the ice cream snare!

    Comment by stephanie — July 29, 2006 @ 1:42 pm

  2. I understand Carrie – I so understand. For some reason growing up my family always considered Friday nights and the weekends as either “free for all” or “junk days”. This mentality has invaded the current life as well!
This weekend has been a struggle that is for sure. I am comforted to know that I am not the only one with weekend issues! ;) Thank you for sharing, it IS worth it and I will pray for you right now.

    Comment by Kat — July 29, 2006 @ 3:34 pm

  3. Hey sweet lady! First of all, let’s find another word instead of “failed”. It just sounds too…

How about “detoured”? You veered to the left for a minute and now you’re getting back on track, eh?!

I know you probably know the stategies already, but let’s go over them anyway. Eat super well on Thursday and Friday. Lots of veggies, lots of water. Have a big salad - with a healthy dressing - before the pizza arrives. Decide beforehand how many pieces you will have - 1 or 2? (not my standard 4). Then make sure you eat your portion sloooowwllly. And don’t read while you eat! (I’m speaking to myself here) As for breakfast, maybe your husband could forego the big breakfasts for awhile?

I know around here, we’ve explained to the boys that we won’t be ordering pizza for awhile, because mommy can’t have it. They aren’t thrilled, but this is a chance for them to learn about being supportive and sacrificing for others.

As far as the ice cream, I think Angie wrote on her blog about some really good frozen treats - I don’t remember what they were…

    Comment by blestwithsons — July 29, 2006 @ 3:35 pm

  4. Oh, Carrie. As I was logging on, it was to say the same thing as you–weekends are dangerous for me.

I also come by it be conditioning as my family always went out to eat on Friday nights (back in the day before pizza delivery).

Maybe while hubby is making up that big breakfast (unless he puts it on hiatus) you can go out, like yard saling, or walking, or what-have-you.

    Praying for you all!

  5. weekends are hard in general. You can do it - I agree with Blest - it’s a DETOUR, not a failure. If at first you don’t succeed, etc.

    Comment by Tracy — July 30, 2006 @ 11:01 am

  6. Hey Carrie - weekends are my most difficult time also. I do take Friday’s off from any meal plan but I try not to dive off the deep end with it. I call it my “diet sabbath” lol. This actually isn’t a problem as long as I’m back on track come Saturday morning. Of course, when Erik is home it’s harder because all routine is out the window.

We can do this though! This journey isn’t about perfection - it’s about doing well MOST of the time lol. More wins than losses in the battlefield.
