In which I recant (Carrie)

Okay, Blest and Leann have talked me into sticking around. I admit Blest’s comment - that during the holidays we’ll need all the help we can get - hit home! So if I can do weigh-ins and comment when I can, and post hit or miss - and not feel like I’m letting anyone down - then I’ll stick it out. Next week I’m planning on going sugar-free to deal with this yeast issue and try to get out of this “no-loss/no-gain” place I’m in, so I’ll need extra prayers - for me and my children! No Weight Watchers fudge bars - ack!

Spunkalicious

I have not been posting most of my SPUNKS (because the ladies I work with at the pregnancy center shower EVERYONE with compliments). But last night when I was at work there was a board meeting going on. Our Executive Director’s husband came in and said, “Mandi??! Is that you?” I said “Yeah it is me” (Thinking he just didn’t remember who I was since I don’t see him all that often). He then said, “Good Grief!! You look great!!”

This is hands down my favorite SPUNK so far!

Priorities (carrie)

I hate to do this, but I’m going to have to say goodbye to the One-Weigh-or-Another blog. When I signed up, it was summertime, and I was much too optimistic about how much time I have for such things during our homeschool year. Now that we’re four weeks in, I’m barely having time to read or blog on my main site or keep up with my Club Mom writing commitments. I will still be checking in as much as possible and I’m going to try to still participate in the weekly weigh-ins to keep myself accountable, but I can’t commit to posting regularly - so I thought it would be best to bow out. You ladies are all so wonderful and I have learned so much from all of you. Thanks for the opportunity.

Love in Him,

Carrie

Yes, it’s a Seinfeld quote but it is fitting these last few days. I haven’t actually vomitted yet but dry heaves and other stomach ick have been going on. I’ll spare you the gory details.

Anyway, if you guys think about it, please pray for me to get better soon. As we all know, moms don’t have time to be ill. I’m running out of energy fast here (sitting up makes me feel worse)…I wrote more in my daily check in for today.

Biggest Loser (LL)

Does anyone watch that television show The Biggest Loser? I just saw it tonight.

First of all, wow! Those people are so brave to put themselves out there for all the world to see as they sweat and grunt. In their workout clothes!
Second of all, I was surprised at how low the calories allowed for the women were. It has made me wonder how many calories a day I consume, ’cause I don’t keep track at all. I look at fat, fiber, and protein but that’s it. I think I might turn an eyeball that direction. I might just shock myself. ;)

And by the way, while I was watching it, I was doing sit-ups and using my dumbbell. (It was the only way I could justify watching television.) Even my son joined in! Family fitness at its finest. Sorta :)

  1. Cool! - The exercise part, I mean.

I’ve never seen the show. But they are doing a similar contest here on the military base. If I didn’t live so far from the base - and didn’t have four kids - I would have joined it. But it’s a several day a week commitment and I don’t have that kind of time to be out of the house!

Is your hubby along for the ride? (Jana)

For those of you who are married, is your husband doing the whole weight loss thing with you? Mine is, and let me tell you, it’s annoying! He’s lost more than I have, he still weighs less than I do, he’s dropped a pants size, and I’m frustrated! Not that I want him to be unhealthy, but he doesn’t have nearly as much to lose as I do.

It doesn’t stop there, though. He gets annoyed if I work out without him. So, do I wait until he’s available (um, midnight or so, once the kids settle down), get up at 6 (yeah, right), or just work out without him and hear him whine? We have a weight machine, which means taking turns. Plus, it means we can’t work out unless the baby’s in bed, because he’ll come along and get his fingers pinched. I’d just rather do it in the afernoon when he’s napping than wait until night. And as far as my treadmill, it’s in the room we’re finishing, and Hubby’s got it pushed into a corner with a sheet over it to keep dust off (so at least I can say my treadmill’s not gathering dust, haha). How am I supposed to use it?

I don’t mean to be complaining. I’m glad he wants to do things with me, believe me. But I kind of feel like he’s blocking me at every turn. I’m not even sure I want advice here, I just felt the need to vent, and to find out if anyone could commiserate.

  1. I guess I’m blessed. My husband always says that he rides on my coat tails when I loose weight. He won’t do it unless I do. I have to say. This time I am loosing more than him though. Maybe that’s because I walk faithfully everyday and am now also doing a 30 min ab video 3 days a week. Oh, did I mention that I also have to push a double stroller on my walk? He comes home and gets on the Tony Little Gazelle for 30 mins. I keep telling him it’s not the same thing. I think it’s great that your husband is in full suport of you though. Have you talked to him about what you want to achieve and the time you want to achieve it in? Maybe give him a synopsis of your day. I have to remind mine occasionally of my “daily scedule”. It couldn’t hurt to talk to him.

    Comment by Tami — September 20, 2006 @ 5:16 am

  2. Yep, and mine is losing faster than me, too. The thing is, though, that men have a higher muscle to fat thing going on which gives them a naturally higher metabolism. My husband is also just a little under 100 pounds heavier than me (and nearly a foot taller) so he needs to lose more than me.

Women also tend to hold onto fat more in their 30’s and early 40’s because they are still fertile (even if you have had a tubal or other surgery and still have your ovaries - *Leann just used the word ovaries on the internet - snickering childishly*). Your body is still in “having a baby” mode and does not want to give up fat easily. Men do NOT have that issue - at least not until Dr. Frankenstein science catches up with them. ;) Whether we want to admit it or not our bodies are very different and our dietary needs are very different from that of our husbands. Sickeningly frustrating but true… *sigh* The great thing is that most husbands see our efforts to lose and not the pounds themselves and think we are hotties anyway. (you might want to check out the book by Shaunti Feldham called For Women Only - men are turned on when they see us doing something to change our bodies - so the effort is the most important part for them) I think what you are experiencing with him is not sabotage but a very personal need for him to spend time with you and maybe even pride in the fact that his wife is changing for the better.

    Comment by Leann — September 20, 2006 @ 7:31 am

  3. Well… I’m married to a six foot tall lean mean fighting Marine (actually he’s not mean- he’s very sweet) so I have the frustration of a husband who has no clue what I’m going through. But he’s very supportive and has never reproached me for my size.

How about you exercise twice?? Get your good workout during the day and then maybe a family walk in the evening? I definitely think you should have a talk with him about finding ways to do things together without compromising your workouts. After all, the more you get what you need fitness wise- the more energy you will have to do things (wink wink nudge nudge say no more) with him!

  2. I’m saying I maintained because everytime I stepped on the scale it seemed to shift a bit. If it has changed, I’m up 1 at the most … which I completely blame on the fact that I need to nibble something right before bed or I go to bed feeling nauseous!

  3. I am down 2 pounds bringing me to 212. Yah! I think I finally broke a plateau that was hanging over my head for almost 2 weeks!!.

  4. 210 / 184.4 / 145 — I am down 3 lbs (total loss so far is 25.6 lbs). I’m also really excited because yesterday I had to go shopping for clothes b/c mine are literally falling off of me. So far I have gone from a size 18/20 to a size 14!!!! My goal of being a 12 by Christmas seems completely reachable to me right now.

    Comment by Mandi — September 18, 2006 @ 7:37 am

  5. I’m up 1. However, I didn’t exercise at all last week due to my shoulder. It’s finally feeling better, and I’m hoping that I’ll do better in the excersize, diet, and water departments!

    Way to go girls!

    Comment by Kimberly — September 18, 2006 @ 7:55 am

  6. Down 1.4! Which I think is pretty good for being on vacation and not being able to do high cardio exercise! (time and childcare issues) But I did TONS of walking…

If I have a good week this week - I should have twenty gone by next Monday which will keep me on track for my goal of losing ten a month. (oh please oh please)

I’m also pretty psyched because I just did my exercise and found to my surprise that I didn’t lose any conditioning while on vacation! YIPPEE!!!

  7. This SUCKS!!! I am up 2 this week after a really stressful week with a sick baby…

I ran this morning and felt good. I did 9 miles last week. I took my measurements and they are the SAME FOR TWO WEEKS in a row but I still gained 2 WHOLE POUNDS - did I mentioned that this SUCKS???

Back to it this week with PMS on the horizon…

    That would be 163/157/135

    Comment by Leann — September 18, 2006 @ 8:08 am

  8. Oh, btw, my husband is down 15 pounds!!! *grrrrrrrrrrrrr* It is just NOT fair…

    Comment by Leann — September 18, 2006 @ 8:23 am

  9. (((HUGS))) Leann - I share your frustration. This week I was down 1 and my husband (who isn’t really trying at all) was down FIVE!! You are soooo right is is NOT fair at all.

BTW, how often do you take your measurements? I’m only doing mine once a month (last friday of the month). There are also online calculators you can use to calculate your lean mass/body fat percentages. I know this helps me some when I seem to have gained or haven’t lost much. I’ll do the calculators and find that I actually put on lean mass (which is good).

Anyway, I just wanted to give you some hugs and let you know that I’ve been there.

    Comment by Blair — September 18, 2006 @ 8:55 am

  10. I completely hear you all on the hubby weight loss. My husband and I started at the same time and he is down over 40 lbs already. But if you calculate the percentage of weight loss we are both down almost the same percentage.

    Comment by Mandi — September 18, 2006 @ 9:10 am

  11. 147/143/129 - Down 3 pounds. But at least 2 of that is because the last couple of weeks my scale has been on carpet. This last week I rearranged and found a place for it in the bathroom on hard vinyl floor. Lesson learned - Do NOT put your scale on carpet! Otherwise, I’m not sure that I lost anything because I only exercised once and had a couple of really bad snack days. But I’m trying to squeeze the exercising in again this week.

    Comment by Anita — September 18, 2006 @ 11:28 am

  12. Not up, not down. Which is pretty good considering my hubby and I went out to dinner at a Mexican restaurant Friday night to celebrate his birthday.

  15. 260/247/130 (240=short term goal) - down 2 lbs!

I’m thrilled to be in the 240s for a third week in a row. I’m hoping to get past 245 lbs next week - which will be the first time in at least 9 months that I was that weight!

Not doing well in other arenas, so feeling very quiet in general. But I’m not overeating, so I guess I’ll be okay eventually.

    Comment by Tracy — September 18, 2006 @ 12:36 pm

    Comment by blestwithsons — September 18, 2006 @ 1:10 pm

  18. Okay… Now I don’t wanna brag or anything  But I’m just so excited that I have to share.

First of all - I started today. So that means that I lost 1.4 pounds on vacation and PMS!! (insert happy dance here)

AND I just put on my black shorts that were too tight the last time I tried them on (and were too tight when I bought them two years ago…so they were unwearable, then too tight again) and now they fit comfortably - almost getting LOOSE!! YEEEHAW!!

I will be posting clothes for someone to take of my hands this week. They will be first come first shipped - so if you’re somewhat short and are heading for a Lane Bryant 18 or 16, be ready!

    Comment by blestwithsons — September 18, 2006 @ 1:13 pm

  19. down one this week!

I also have a new to be outfit that fits wonderfully!

    Comment by Maria — September 18, 2006 @ 3:48 pm

  20. Down .2! Not much, but I’ll take it!

    Comment by Jana — September 18, 2006 @ 5:32 pm

  21. up .2
which I guess isn’t too bad. I really did very well this past week. I even joined the gym (BWS…thanks) so they said that muscle weighs more than fat so it will take a couple weeks to really start seeing a difference in the pounds. I worked out 4 days last week and then again today. I.LOVE.IT!
I feel so good! And my clothes are not even fitting. I have already given half of my digs to another friend who is losing. Now I am waiting to fit into my sister’s clothes she grew out of too. (She hit her goal about 3 weeks ago.)
    Great job, ladies!

    Comment by Angie — September 18, 2006 @ 6:14 pm

Are your children overweight? (Kimberly)

I am sick to my stomach right now. My son, 10 years old, just stepped on the scale and weighed 145 pounds. Here I’ve been trying to make changes for our family to be healthier, but he just keeps gaining. He looks obese… he IS obese. I’m now at the point where I’m going to have my hubby buy locks for the cupboards and fridge. He sneaks food, and it’s part of his compulsive behaviour from his ADHD. My oldest daughter (11) is slightly overweight and needs to loose 10 pounds. My youngest child is our healthiest, and the only one that is not “fat”.

I just feel so hopeless.

Edamame Me!

Okay… so I traveled all the way to Colorado Springs to go to a grocery store. But not just any grocery store. Tonight I got to play in a Whole Foods Market! I love that store! I got tahini, finally. So I can make authentic hummus when I get home. And I got some good coffee (hotel coffee not so good, yes?). I bought a frozen entree made by Kashi to try for lunch tomorrow. It looks really good - and VERY healthy. I also bought my favorite candy bar (gasp!) to be eaten in tiny pieces over the next month or two. It’s an Endangered Species Tiger Bar. Dark chocolate with roasted espresso beans…oh yeah baby! Dark chocolate is actually allowed on South Beach - in small quantities. This bar is so rich and decadent that a little square is all I can handle.

But what I really wanted to tell you about was these—> wasabi.jpg Dry Roasted Edamame with Wasabi! Ohhhh man! These things are awesome!! And check out this label…

    Comment by lady laura — September 14, 2006 @ 7:36 am

  2. edamame is soy beans. Count me out. But you don’t want to get me started on the horrors of soy.

I am so jealous that you got to go to a whole foods market! The closest one to me is 90 minutes away, and I’m hoping to make the trip soon! It has such awesome stuff!

  3. Yes- roasted soy beans. And Wasabi is Japanese horseradish - so it definitely has a bite! But that’s the way - uh huh uh huh - I like it - uh huh uh huh! They also have lightly salted if you aren’t into spice.
