The virtures of biking (anita)

Lately I’ve been having some hip pain and I know it’s because my muscles are weak. Three years ago I injured my knee and had surgery. My injured leg is STILL weaker than my other leg. I just didn’t realize how much weaker until I decided to take a break from the eliptical machine and switch to the bicycle. The bikes at the health club have a cross country program. Wow! It’s been a challenge for my weaker leg.

If you are suffering from hip or knee pain, I recommend riding a bike for exercise. It doesn’t put any added stress on your joints and will strengthen the muscles and ligaments around those joints. I found a great web site that covers hip joint health and strengthening exercises. And another on knee joint health.

After two days of bike riding, my hip is already feeling better. So, go ride your bike!

  3. So far, the answer to that is yes. I’ve done a smidgen of hand weights, but 99% of my intense exercise has been on my bike. My bike is something like this one at Sears. Only mine was purchased over four years ago, and has a built in weight bench.

I get a pretty intense workout by upping the resistance- like I’m going uphill - and by pushing as hard as I can. I also use the preset workouts, and sometimes I do exercises with my arms up in the air while I ride. Whew!

However, after two months, I must admit to being a bit bored and to wanting more. Besides, I need some more serious weight training. So I’m getting ready to join Curves! I’ll either go tonight or tomorrow (hubby has a four day weekend - huzzah!) and I’ll report back!
