A Fine Kettle of FIsh (Debs)

I was reading earlier that it was National Cliche Day in the States on Friday. We’ve missed the boat slightly on this one, but it got me thinking of food related cliches. Here’s one I came up with

A moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips.

Can anyone think of any more?

  4. This question reminds me of a podcast my sister has of a British writer/comedian named Ricky Gervais. There is a guy on his show named Carl Pilkinton, and he’s pretty dense. In one episode, Carl had never heard of Ben Franklin and Ricky and the other host, Steve Merchant, were trying to see if he heard of some of his sayings. One of them was “Waste not, want not.” Carl could not believe that someone could become famous for saying things that, in his words, basically amounted to “Hey! Don’t go chucking that. You might need it later!” They were going to have a contest to see if Carl could hone down any more pithy sayings to their bare bones meaning.

I guess we just get so used to hearing these sayings, and never question them or how they got so well known.
