Grand unveiling (Debs)

I’m one of those people who is very good at creating mental images of people that I’ve never met, and especially good at making up mental images that are nothing like the real person. So, I was wondering if we could have a big unveiling and get everyone (if they wanted to) to post a picture of themselves on a particular day.

Now before anyone starts saying “I hate the way I look in photos” please let me explain why. Firstly it’d be great for those of us who don’t know each other in person to have a small glimpse of what everyone else looks like. Secondly, it’d be a great way to spur ourselves on - we could re-post after a month, or 3 months or whatever, and actually be able to see how we’d changed. That would encourage us that even if things are slow, that changes are happening (and also a warning to ourselves that we don’t ever want to be that big again!).

Personally I do hate looking at photos of myself - I don’t feel that they’re actually who I am. However, they are what the world outside is seeing, and it’s good to remind ourselves of that. I’ll share an example of that from today - As I walked home from swimming this morning all the kids were coming out of the sixth form college (16-18 year olds). You always look at people as you walk along the road, right? Well I was feeling all glowing after swimming and I know that I’ve already lost 11 pounds, but I was thinking about what they’d be thinking if they looked at me “Oh look, there’s some sad fat loser walking along the road” (sad in the sense of loser, stupid person etc. Not sure if you use it like that in the States). Sometimes it’s good to remember how far we’ve come, but sometimes we have to be realistic and look forward to how far there is to go.

Does that makes sense to anyone? And what do you think about the group ‘unveiling’?

UPDATED - I just wanted to add that you can do head only or full view, which ever you’re most comfortable with. That’s ok isn’t it Blest?

  1. I’m all for it but hey…I didn’t have a problem posting a picture. I hate the way I look in pictures but it really is my only form of reality as to how I look. I can stand in front of a mirror and still not “look” as big as I really am.

  2. First of all, I rebuke those nasty-bad thoughts!!! Ya just gotta think about how hard you’re working and that you will someday know the pride of an accomplishment that few people ever know!!! You WILL get there Debs - You will!!!

Second. Everybody knows I’ll put up a pic. I’ve done it a coupla times already. But for those who are shy, we could do password protected posts. That way only the team members, and privileged friends, would get to view.

    Whadya think?

  3. Yeah, I wasn’t saying I thought them, I was just just thinking how other people might think! But thanks for standing up for me Blest. It was probably a bit harsh and I hope I didn’t offend anyone, I just wanted you all to understand where I was coming from :-)

Ooh, password protected posts. Didn’t know you could have them. How exciting! I will put up a photo of me once I’ve got my dad to lend me his camera. I’ve also been trying to work out how to put on my profile on my blog, but haven’t been brave enough to try ;-)

  4. Oh crumbuckets. I was wrong. (alert the media, I don’t say that often) I saw a box on the write page where you could check “private” and thought it would make a password post - I’ve seen those on other sites. But no. I think it just makes your drafts private or something… Phooey.

If there is a way to do it, I don’t know what it is. We’ll just have to be gutsy after all!

I will give a +1 to the average for any team which has at least 3 people post photos.

  5. Do we wanna pick a day to do it, or just whenever?

  6. I support picking a day and getting a picture on that day from everyone… I guess those of us “friends” can just email our team leader a picture to be posted?

  7. Yeah, email it to me and I’ll get it up there Anne :o ) In fact, maybe I can do a whole team post of our pics?? I’ll email everyone - should be interesting.

Question though - is this just a headshot or what?

  8. So, what do you think….spandex shots anyone? *giggles* Yeah, me neither. ;) I can post a normal-ish picture of myself though. I love to know who I’m talking to, in a visual sense. *grins*
