Too much water?

In case you have ever wondered… yes, there is such a thing as too much water. I’d heard of this when we were training to walk a marathon. But, here’s an article that was on the BBC news this morning. They just didn’t say how much is too much. I’ll have to go hunting around to see if I can find an estimate somewhere.

Update: I did find this article on Prevention Magazine. They recommend 8, 8-ounce glass a day as a general guideline. But you need to pay attention to your own body. For you, it could be more or less. Here’s the article I ran across when training for the marathon.loan calculator mortgage 2loan mortgage 2nd refinanceconsolidation 125 loans debtamerican services education loanaccepted loanagent mortgage loan financeloans unsecured aboutadvance loan payday america Map

  1. And I know somewhere back in the first month we had a link to a calculator which factored in weight, climate, activity level, and the amount of non-hydrating beverages consumed. I need more water, for example, cause I live in the desert and drink a lot of coffee…

  2. Here’s more info on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_intoxication

The woman in the original article was not allowed to urinate during the competition - that could very well have complicated things. What a stupid competition.

Of course, the 8/8oz recommendation does not take into account exercise, body weight, weather…etc. Some of the articles I’ve read recommend drinking half your body weight in ounces per day. So, a 150 lb person would drink 75oz a day and this may increase as you exercise heavily or if you consume products such as caffeine/alcohol that act as diuretics.

Obviously too much of a good thing…any good thing, could be very bad.

  3. I think I’ve read also that you shouldn’t need to pee more than approximately every two hours if you’re properly hydrated. I know it’s hard to gage at the beginning of weight loss since a lot of us lose water weight. But it’s an interesting thing to think about.

  4. Anne– I have heard that too, but if one’s is in the bathroom more often than that, does it mean they are over-hydrated? Or under? I get so confused….
