Shake it up baby, work it out

Filed under: Exercise blestwithsons @ 12:15 pm

Since we’re focusing on moving our bodies these days, I wanted to reprint some quotes I put up in the infancy of our site…

Check what trainer Bob Greene has to say in his book Making the Connection:

For many years, were told in order to burn fat, you must exercise longer and slower. […] …that’s because lab tests show that when you exercise at lower levels, you burn a higher percentage of stored fat versus stored carbohydrates. As you increase your intensity, you begin to burn a higher percentage of stored carbohydrates. This is true.

But keep reading….

The truth is, energy is energy. It doesn’t matter what fuel source you burn during your 20 to 60 minutes of exercise. What does matter is raising your metabolism for your 20 to 60 minutes of exercise and all the hours afterward. Low intensity exercise doesn’t do much for your metabolism. But moderately high intensity exercise does. And when you increase your metabolism, you decrease your set point and your body fat.

Bob goes on to explain that working out at 70-80% of your maximum heart rate, or at a 7 or 8 on his modified scale, is the best zone for an effective workout. Here is how he describes 7 and 8.

7. This is the feeling you might get when you are exercising vigorously. There is a definite feeling of fatigue, but you are quite sure you can maintain this level for the rest of your exercise session. Your breathing is deep and you are definitely aware of it. You can carry on a conversation, but you would probably prefer not to. (unless you are Blest and will only stop talking when you are unconscious :lol: ) This is the baseline level of exercise that you will maintain in your exercise sessions.

8. This is the feeling you might get when you are exercising very vigorously. There is a very definite feeling of fatigue, and if you asked yourself if you could continue for the remainder of exercise session, you think you could, but are not 100 percent sure. You breathing is very deep, you can still carry on a conversation, but you don’t feel like it. This becomes the feeling you should experience only after you are comfortable reaching a level sevenand are ready for a more intense workout. This is the level that produces rapid results, but you must learn how to maintain it. Exercising at this level is difficult for many people.

Okay! So it’s important to remember that you need to be doing more than just plodding along dreamily while you read a magazine or plan your grocery list. You should be WORKING! If I want the same heart-pounding, sweat-dripping workouts I’ve become accustomed to, I have to pedal much faster and at a much higher resistance than I did back in the Fall. If you’re in better shape now, than you can do more!

2 Comments »

  1. Yes, mom. :-) I would like to learn more about the whole heart rate thing. I have also read that mixing up your intensity is good too. And I try to do that as well.

    And I have to say that doing an hour-long work out is hard. I’ve been working into that for my Around the World Fitness Challenge and it is making me work!

The leader board

Filed under: Challenges blestwithsons @ 8:02 am

heart.jpgThis is Blest coming to you live with an update on the extremely exciting, superbly sweaty Happy Heart Competition. Participants have been working hard for weeks now, moving and grooving their way to the prize of better health and….for the champion, a sterling silver and crystal necklace!! Together, these hard-working ladies have logged over 110 hours of exercise in the last three weeks! Let’s give them a big hand, folks! And now, the news you’ve been waiting for…. Here are the current top ten contenders:

Update: Okay…y’know how I say below that anything can happen in the Happy Heart Challenge? Uhh.. well something already did. I made an error in tabulating the points! :oops: The Leader Board is now correct. My most humble and abject apologies for this mistake.

Tami 48

Blair 45

Anita 39

Jana 35

Laura 32

Sarah (a.k.a. natasha) 31

Blest 31

Debs 30

Bethany 26

D’aun 20

Now you might be thinking that this is a run-away victory. But let me remind you, anything can happen in the Happy Heart Challenge! And it’s worth observing that at least one of the top ten started this competition with a mere 2 points in week one. Don’t let a bad week throw you! There’s plenty of points still out there to earn!!

I also want to tell you that in 2007, the official members of OWOA have lost 41.1 pounds. And friends of OWOA (those who regularly weigh-in with us) have lost 12.3 pounds, bringing our total weight lost in this first month of a New Year to more than FIFTY pounds!

No one can understand the truth until he drinks of coffee’s frothy goodness. ~Sheik Abd-al-Kadir

consciousness.jpgAlright now… I see how it is. I’ve given up sugar. I’ve given up white flour. I haven’t had a bite of pizza in six months, nor a cold and invigorating Pepsi. I have touched nary a tortilla chip and let ice cream come not near me. But now…. Oh now you think you can come between me and my beloved brew, my delicious dark obsession. Well think again! Take that!!

From an article on WebMD:

Want a drug that could lower your risk of diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and colon cancer? That could lift your mood and treat headaches? That could lower your risk of cavities?

If it sounds too good to be true, think again.

Coffee, the much maligned but undoubtedly beloved beverage, just made headlines for possibly cutting the risk of the latest disease epidemic, type 2 diabetes. And the real news seems to be that the more you drink, the better.

{…}

“Overall, the research shows that coffee is far more healthful than it is harmful,” says Tomas DePaulis, PhD, research scientist at Vanderbilt University’s Institute for Coffee Studies, which conducts its own medical research and tracks coffee studies from around the world. “For most people, very little bad comes from drinking it, but a lot of good.”

Still there? Well, here - have another dose!

Consider this: At least six studies indicate that people who drink coffee on a regular basis are up to 80% less likely to develop Parkinson’s, with three showing the more they drink, the lower the risk. Other research shows that compared to not drinking coffee, at least two cups daily can translate to a 25% reduced risk of colon cancer, an 80% drop in liver cirrhosis risk, and nearly half the risk of gallstones.

Wanna hear from the other side? I can take it!

On the flip side, it’s clear that coffee isn’t for everyone. Its legendary jolt in excess doses — that is, more than whatever your individual body can tolerate — can increase nervousness, hand trembling, and cause rapid heartbeat. Coffee may also raise cholesterol levels in some people and may contribute to artery clogging. But most recent large studies show no significant adverse affects on most healthy people, although pregnant women, heart patients, and those at risk for osteoporosis may still be advised to limit or avoid coffee.

rule.jpgI’m not pregnant. I don’t have a heart condition. I don’t have osteoporosis…. So check this out!

The bottom line: “People who already drink a lot of coffee don’t have to feel ‘guilty’ as long as coffee does not affect their daily life,” says Hu. “They may actually benefit from coffee habits in the long run.”

Ha! Kudos to Kat and you other java-jilters, but to quote an unknown genius, “I’d stop drinking coffee, but I’m no quitter. ” :lol:

giveme.jpg

Although I’m serious as a dark roast about not giving up my coffee, this post is, of course, tongue-in-coffee-soaked-cheek. And the signs you see here are just a tiny portion of my coffee home decor. Come not between me and my coffee! :razz: big porn producers namenip big tits pornbig porn partyporn bigmovies big pornthumbs big pornclips porn big pussystar roger big porn Map

    Comment by Debs — January 30, 2007 @ 3:46 pm

  5. And here I was limiting myself to 3 cups of full-throttle a day, thinking that more would be bad for me. Though I really wanted more, like in the afternoon. I do want to get some decaf for that though. And now, with your permission ;) , I can! Free at last :)

    I do feel sorry for those with whom coffee, God’s good gift, does not agree.

  10. Hear, hear!! Let us imbibe with impunity!

    Comment by Jana — January 31, 2007 @ 7:05 am

  11. Yeah well, “Natasha”, too little coffee doesn’t do much for your mood either! :wink: You don’t need to abstain, you just need to scientifically determine your optimal consumption quotient! :lol: Come stay with me and we’ll figure that out! :razz:

    The metal sign came from Hobby Lobby. The little plaques -of which I have four - were a Christmas gift from my mommy. I also have cool coffee hooks, cutting boards, trivets, framed pics, dish towels, coasters, message board, and a gigantic tin coffee pot. And yet somehow it’s not overwhelming…as a matter of fact- there’s not quite enough. You know what I need…a coffee wall quilt! Yeah! That’s it! And I know just where to get one…. :wink:

    Comment by blestwithsons — January 31, 2007 @ 7:08 am

  12. You know, my husband thought I was crazy when I told him I was addicted (and dependent) on coffee. It and sugar were my drugs of choice. When I went off it I noticed a HUGE difference in how I felt. He was a coffee junkie himself. I challenged him to quit and see what happened. He swore coffee did nothing for or against him….well, he was wrong. He’s off it now and says the difference is unbelievable. He hadn’t realized how he was medicating himself throughout the day with it.

    Different people may have different tolerance levels but I still believe that most people don’t realize how dependent they are on the caffeine. Have you noticed all the “sleep aid” commercials? Makes me wonder if America is on caffeine overload? I don’t think most coffee drinkers (or caffinated soda drinkers for that matter) stop at one cup (or can) in the morning.

    Just my opinion and all you caffeine drinkers can stone me if you like lol. Just for the record, I do like the taste of coffee so it’s not like I’m “anti-coffee”. Oh and I do like coffee memorabilia and decor - very cool.

    Comment by Blair — January 31, 2007 @ 8:07 am

  13. Oh I know how dependent/addicted I am. I just don’t care!! :razz: Besides, I’m ADD. Better coffee than Ritalin!

    Oh- and I don’t have a problem sleeping at night.

    Comment by blestwithsons — January 31, 2007 @ 9:27 am

  14. ROFL - you’re too funny Blest - at least you aren’t in denial :)

    Also, you may drink 8 cups but it’s not full octane either - that does make a difference.

(waving hands wildly and jumping up and down)

Ok, so since my last post here we moved, unloaded and then I went out of town for a while to visit family and pick up my kids. The hubby gave the wrong address to the cable internet guys and so it took longer than we thought to get hooked up (have I mentioned that Comcast is a pain of a company?). Anyway, I’m back online and am almost completely unpacked…sigh…

My weigh in had me down 1.8 for the week but I only got 8 points for the challenge. Last week was crazy and to be honest, I’m amazed I’m down and got in any exercise at all. I don’t want to be in a plane or a vehicle for more than 30 minutes for a while.

We’re so ready to feel settled and have less stress for a while (the new company messed up hubby’s pay check and deposited less than half what it was supposed to be…praise the Lord for savings!). I am far from caught up on my blog/online/email stuff but have made a bit of progress today lol. I just wanted to check in and let you gals know that I’m alive and kickin’.

I’ve got to go help the kids organize their rooms (this place is much bigger than our place in KS - another praise!) and I have a 4 pt earning workout to get in - tee hee :) Thanks ladies for all the encouraging words last week - I wish I had been able to read them before today - it would have helped me a lot as I was feeling really low. ((HUGS)) And thank you Debs for the sweet words on my blog - I’ve missed you too :)

Rough stuff

This past week (starting the Monday before last) has been the hardest week in the past….ohh… well a long time.

Please find a seat.

I quit coffee*.

Migraines, shaking, cold sweats, and severe nausea for DAYS. Why? Because I was addicted to having 2 pots of REGULAR coffee (strong enough to hold the spoon up by itself, and no sissy additives – hee hee) A DAY! Then add in the few… cough… several … times a week for a cup of regular coffee with 2-3 shots of espresso. I was a mess.

Isn’t that crazy? Isn’t that WRONG? Like wrong in the sense of the word that means: bad, faulty, in error, awry.

I feel so incredibly sitting here right now. I now CRAVE sleep at 10:00 pm, I am not a psycho jittery mess that is constantly acting as if PMS has me in its grip, and I am actually even a little nicer to be around. So while that was the hardest thing for me to give up – even more so than chocolate – I feel like I have made some serious strides in taking better CARE of myself. I won’t lie though, walking through the mall, I smelled that incredibly coffee aroma and nearly drowned myself in drool. But it is ok – I think that this is the best choice that I’ve made in a long time. :)

Katie

*I would like to be free from coffee for a month. After a month, I am limiting myself to 1-2 cups a day of DECAF coffee.

  1. I’m so proud of you Kat!!! I’d just about be willing to bet that giving up the coffee will aid in your weight loss too. Caffine is such a water retainer! You can do it!

  3. I feel your pain. I give it up for Lent for the first time last year and intend to do it again. I have already warned everyone in the house so they know what to expect. But the pain is so worth it - I feel incredible after the withdrawl symptoms go away. The psychological factor is big though. I crave and want coffee more then I want chocolate (and that’s saying something!). HANG IN THERE!

    Comment by natasha25461 — January 30, 2007 @ 9:50 am

  4. You’re a better man than I am Gunga Din!! :lol: Though in my defense - the 8-10 cups a day I drink are mostly decaf. It probably adds up to about 2-3 cups of “real” coffee.

    I am SOOOO proud of you! If you can conquer this - you can conquer anything!!

    Comment by blestwithsons — January 30, 2007 @ 10:19 am

  5. Oh Girl!!! I went through this a while back!! I did a whole blog series on it because I felt so terrible lol. I know how awful the withdrawals are! I was a mess for days but was soooo much better when I got on the other side. You’re doing awesome and I am sooooo proud of you Kat!!!

    Comment by Jana — January 30, 2007 @ 2:12 pm

  10. Okay… See now. In the morning it’s 3 cups of 1/3 Caffeinated - which comes out to 1 Cup of Real Coffee. After lunch - about the same. After dinner, some decaf. So yeah - about 8 Cups - but nowhere near that much in caffeine. And I’m NOT quitting so don’t even.

    Comment by blestwithsons — January 30, 2007 @ 2:13 pm

    Now root beer? That was a problem. Especially if it was in a glass bottle. I would drink 3-5 IBC root beers a day!

    I’m proud of you!

My computer is working again!!! I felt like the world was coming to an end last Thurs. First my hubby decided to cancel cable (we agreed to it) and then Thurs evening the desk top crashed (I had a lap top that got a virus 3 1/2 yrs ago and he never fixed it but decided to) and then Fri. afternoon he informed me that he cancelled internet because on Sat we were going into a new billing cycle and he wanted to get an air card. Might I also add here that I have NO radio either. I had NO connection to the outside world and no music except for the music my children and I make. I was lost…until last night.

Anyways, Blest, will you post stats for the Happy Heart challenge? It would be nice to see where we all are as well as possibly stir some of us on to get moving!

Where have all the people gone? Long time passing…

Where is everybody? Actually, that reminds me of a BA (British Airways) advert from a few yeays ago. I think it was BA, anyway, some airline or other. There was this poor little cartoon giraffe, and he’d be in a room and look around and see there was no one else around. And he’d say “Where is everybody?” And then it would show lots of other cartoon animals off partying in Barcelona (only £299 return) or Paris (only £149 return)…. Yeah, basically it was trying to say hey, look at our amazing offers, don’t get left behind. I never did take up any of their offers (I’ve never actually been on an aeroplane, but that’s a whole other post), but the advert stuck with me!

Hmmm, I think what I was going to say in this post was “Hello everybody, I’m back from my internet break (as dictated by our modem not working) and the break has felt great, I’d been feeling a bit stale in my blogging, and now I’m all fresh and more coherent”. However, my last paragraph might just have proved me all wrong. I plead residual tiredness from my weekend with three delightful children (see pictures on my blog)

So, actually I don’t think I’ve really got anything much to say in this post. Just didn’t want Blest to feel all alone in the blogosphere (how do you spell that word? If it even is a word). Ok, so now I’m just displaying my general lack of ability to stick to a topic for more than two lines at a time. Deep breath, focus….

If you haven’t yet reported in then DO SO AT ONCE, and if you have, then it was lovely to see you. Think it’s time I wondered off back to my own little world (before I regret all the randomness I’ve written in this post!)

    I’m putting myself back to Phase 1 for a week and then trying again for Phase 2, learning from this week, i.e. start with small amounts of the right carbs and keep away from the chocolate.

  5. Starting over - how many times must I do this before I “get it”?

    SO here we go again - 275/275/250 . Short term goal for the time being. I’m beginning to think taking the Pill has aided my weight gain in the last year. For year and years I leveled out at a hefty 256 - and stayed there. This year I started the Pill and crossed that threshold.

    Anyhoo…new Nordic Track Elliptical will be delivered tomorrow. I promised myself that this is IT. Once I have the elliptical in hand (been waiting 2 weeks), I’d use it for 20 minutes a day minimum, 5 days a week.

    Wish me luck!

  6. 147/139/130 no change.
    16 exercise points.

    This is the most exercising I’ve done in months and it feels good. My health club’s Around the World Challenge starts today - going for the next 8 weeks.

    No change… I’m thinking it’s the imminent arrival of you-know-what. That and four consecutive nights of really crummy sleep. (hubby out of town and sick toddlers in my bed)

    12 points

  8. 294/268/260 (short term goal) which is (I think, correct me if I’m wrong Blest!) 1.2 down from last week. - I’m still tired, and trying to keep all those numbers in my head was tricky!

    Only 10 points this week.

  9. whoa… where is everyone?

    Comment by Anne — January 29, 2007 @ 11:58 am

  10. Beats me… it has been strangely quiet around here for the last few days. Even with the “party” - not nearly the response I had hoped…. Ah well. Waxes and Wanes, dontcha know! :wink:

  11. I was wondering where everyone was too. Hey Blest and Anne, how are you guys doing?
    Maybe I’ll write a post..

    No change this week, but I can feel a change in the way my clothes fit, so something good is happening!

    And 19 points for me this week.

  14. 264/252.8/130 (250 short term)

    down .2 lbs. okay…

    two big changes in my life this week
    1) I started going to a church study/support group for weight loss, which meets every Monday. We’re going through Lose It For Life.

    2) I joined Curves. I’ve gone there before and liked it a lot. I joined up for a year with a monthly bank draft, so now I have to get my money’s worth. I do better with people around me exercising too.

    exercise points - I’m not in the running, though I did 8 points this week.

  16. Don’t lose courage Natasha - I’ve had lots of weeks like that, and you’ve just gotta put the last week behind you and say ‘this is a new week, with new opportunities to make great decisions’ - pretty much what I need to say to myself every week actually, cos I’ve never had a perfect week yet. But we’ll get there, one weigh or another!

    Doing the happy dance (imagine Snoopy dancing - ears flapping and feet moving so fast you can’t see them!)!

    I lost 5, yes count them, 1,2,3,4,5 pounds this week!!

    O.K., O.K., I didn’t do South Beach exactly, but I limited my carbs to “good carbs” and ate lots of extra veggies. The family mostly didn’t rebel. My husband fixed his version of “oatmeal cake with the kitchen sink thrown in” in the microwave for dessert for himself and the kids when they wanted dessert. I stayed out of the kitchen and let them enjoy!

    Food is tasting great too! Now I’m inspired to try to eat more low carb dishes and stay on track, budget wise, at the grocery store tomorrow night. I have to say that having the right snacks on hand for the afternoon slump helped tremendously.

    Thanks for the inspiration ladies!

  18. Ha! I am so not a contender! 2 points this week. I’m also recovering from the stomach flu, so while my current numbers are 215/209/150, which is down 3.5 pounds, I’d expect that I wouldn’t maintain all that loss. We’ll see!

    Comment by Christy — January 29, 2007 @ 3:40 pm

  19. My points! I fogot to add that I have 14 points for last week.

    Thanks!

  20. 216/199.5/140

    Down 3.5! And broke the horrid 200 lbs.! I’ve been wanting to do that so badly. Before I became pregnant the third time I was inching (pounding?) my way towards 185 and was horrified! I couldn’t believe how big I got while pregnant. This was my first experience over 200 and NOT pregnant (although I only got over 200 with this last pregnancy) and I did not like it!

    So, my exercise is terrible. I only have 8 points again. My knees just stopped hurting (still not sure what I did because I’ve never had knee problems before). I guess I’ll have to eat humble pie after that post I wrote! I’m sure it’s South Beach friendly! :D

  21. Go D’Aun and Bethany!!! We might even forgive you for leaving it so late in the day to weigh-in (it’s nearly 11pm for me - Talking of which, I ought to be in bed!)

  22. I am posting so late but it still Monday! Our desktop totally crashed on Thurs…dear hubby got my laptop up and running Thurs evening however he brilliantly decided on Fri. morning to cancel internet service since it was getting ready to go into a new billing cycle. He figured he’d order an air card…grrrrrrrrrr………ah well, we got the air card this evening and I am now up and running.
    212/192/185…no loss this week…lets go with you know what came and I got the tummy bug with it this time

    exercise 4/7
    water 7/7
    memory verse 1

    Happy Heart - 12pts (ouch!!! so much less than the previous weeks! ah well…better get back on track this week now that I feel better)

  23. I was down another 2.5 on Sunday. I want to start exercising more, but my energy seems totally zapped in the evenings and I am NOT a morning person! Maybe its just the nasty weather that has me feeling blah!

    Now slash me in 1/2 ;)

  25. Sorry for being late - crazy-busy day, plus not feeling real great. No exercise points this week, I’ve been fighting a nasty sinus thingy that has affected my ears and makes me dizzy. And no change in my weight as a result.

    Comment by Carrie — January 30, 2007 @ 8:24 am

  26. up 6. I am so sick of being sick. I am actually sick of everything right now. I’m not doing well at all right now. off to find a tissue…

  27. Now Debs, I try to post first thing on Monday mornings, but I have to get to work. I always check to see if the weigh-in post is up, although I don’t expect Blest to have it up by 5:30 (and she’s an hour later than me as well!)I always post as soon as I get home from work. I thought about posting at work but I hate to waste everyone’s tax dollars! Well, maybe not yours…but all the American chics that blog here! :D

    Hope all you sick girls start feeling better real soon!!

  28. Hehe Bethany! It just felt like really late for me, cos it was past my bedtime (I was meant to be getting an early night!) But for you guys it was only really the middle of the afternoon\early evening. I don’t post my stats till I get home from work, because when I go to work some of you might not even have gone to bed the day before. Oooh, the more you try to figure it out the more it gets even more confusing I know that on the days I’m looking after the little one (and a bit more flexible than when I’m in school) there’s not much chance checking OWOA till after 2pm (for me) which is 6am (blog time - I know some of you are different to that…)
    Ok, enough already. See, I also have a tendancy to babble when I ought to be in bed (10.30om for me right now…)
    Must go to bed :grin:

LAte but ... (Leann)

Real life got in the way this weekend and my computer (you may want to sit down for this one Blest) has been TURNED OFF COMPLETELY for THREE WHOLE DAYS!!! LOL So, without further adieu…

The last six months have brought…

* No more sodas

* Way more vegetarian eating

* More walking

* More drinking of normal water amounts each day - about 80 ounces a day
* Some really cool SPUNKS (4 this week alone from a fellow chef sister, church members and my darling hubby)
* Less weight (10 pounds total)

* A smaller girth! LOL

* Smaller pants

* Smaller bra

* Smaller tops

* My wedding ring spins around on my finger now instead of being swollen in place

* More energy to play with my kids

* Almost NO PMS anymore and the cramping is to a delightfully tolerable minimum

* My skin looks better

* My hair is healthier

* Almost completely sugar free!!! WOOT - this one is BIG BIG BIG!!!!!

* Much fewer headaches and joint pain

I still have about 13 pounds to go and I am back on track with eating, water, exercise and such since Christmas.

Now, with all that being said… I am taking some time away from the glow of the lovely lulling computer screen for an unknown period of time. I am resigning from the heart contest because I just won’t be here to check in. I am also not turning this thing on to report weigh-ins. It is a God led thing and I am going to obey. If that means I need to step down from here then that is fine. I understand if someone else needs to take my place here. I will still read when I do get online but I am not sure I will be able to post much anymore. You can read a bit more on my main blog, if you like, about the whole thing…

Happy 6 months and here is to another great 6 months of lots of pounds lost and lots of lives changed through One Weigh… *raises sparkling water to all you ladies* Love to you all!!! :)
