Question

When I get up in the morning, I do not feel like eating. The thought nearly makes me sick (No, I am not pregnant, this is normal for me.) I drink water. Sometimes I get hungry around lunch, sometimes I might have a few pangs that go away. I am hungry at supper but don’t eat huge amounts. Then I might have a snack in the evening, just because Hubby does. (The later is not normal for me, just the breakfast part.)

What gives? Has my stomach shrunk? Am I having “food issues”, because nothing really sounds good that I am fixing for the family? If it helps me lose weight, that is great, but if this is unhealthy I want to do something about it.

The only other time I lost interest in food was before my wedding when I was depressed, but I am not depressed now, though I have my moments. This makes it hard to cook for the family, because it is hard to think of things that I want to cook. It is hard to get motivated about cooking when you know you aren’t going to enjoy eating it. Even though Hubby will eat anything, since it doesn’t appeal to me I feel like he won’t like it, and I am depriving him.

Help. What is wrong with me?

  1. Interesting. I know everyone says that to have successful weight loss you’re supposed to eat breakfast. But if it makes you sick than don’t do it.

I feel your pain about not liking your own cooking. I sometimes try to imagine that I’m at someone else’s house when I’m eating. It works for about two seconds.

Try some new recipes or a new cut of meat. Comb allrecipes.com for your favorite ingredients and maybe something appealing will come up.

Oh, and on the breakfast thing: don’t limit yourself to just breakfast food. I once knew a lady who ate a ham sandwich for breakfast sometimes (me, I’m saying heat that baby up and add a scrambled egg and some cheese and now you’re talkin’…but I digress)

  2. I’m not a breakfast person either…but it really IS important. Every nutritionist I’ve ever read harps on breakfast. It really kicks your metabolism into high gear. And every good diet plan I’ve ever seen recommends three meals and two snacks…again - to keep the metabolism going.

I think the trick is to find what works for you. A small turkey rollup, or maybe some natural peanut butter? I’m an oatmeal gal, myself. Or even just some whole wheat toast with a glass of milk? There’s gotta be something you can deal with first thing.

As far as the total loss of interest in food - if it were me, I’d say it was hyperfocus. I get to where I like being hungry, and enjoy seeing how far I can go without eating…but that’s not healthy. Eat your breakfast and you will probably want your lunch… You might get more calories than you’re getting now, but your metabolism will be working much better.

How’s your energy level, by the way?

  3. I can definitely get like that … when I was working a full time job (outside the home) I would find that my body/mind was just not awake enough to be hungry until later in the day and that’s when I ate, but like the others have mentioned, everything I’ve read has said that breakfast is vital to starting your metabolism. What worked for me was non-traditional breakfasty kind of stuff. When I was pregnant, because I didn’t feel like eating, but knew I needed to eat to kill the queasies and get some protien into me, I ate peanut butter almost every morning from the day I found out I was pregnant (usually in the form of a peanut butter and cheese sandwich, but also just on crackers). Something about it did the trick for me when nothing else sounded good.

  4. I’m with Christine–are there ANY foods that sound good in the morning (within reason, of course!)?

Maybe you just need to have a bite or two of something to wake up those taste buds and get those gastric juices flowing.

I have a friend who doesn’t eat breakfast, nor lunch (says she doesn’t feel hungry for either), but does eat a “normal” dinner. She is a bit overweight and cannot figure it out why she isn’t losing with eating so little. Her doc told her that her body is in starvation mode and is storing every bite she eats. I thought that was interesting information; she thinks he is a quack-lol.

  5. Thanks for the tips. Maybe a little soup in the morning. That has a nice ring to it. We will see. I definitely don’t want every bite to be stored:-). Maybe that is what is happening because I am not losing tons of weight.
My energy level hasn’t been that bad. But with the heat and all I don’t know what has the most affect on that.

  6. Did you know that pizza is the perfect breakfast food? Just get yourself a whole-grain english muffin, pop on that pizza sauce, some veggies and some cheese and BAM! You have the perfect combination of protein/carbs/vegetables to start your day. And I’m not making this up, I learned it from a nutritionist.

Basically, I’m saying what the other gals are. Breakfast doesn’t have to mean cereal or oatmeal. Quite often I have a bean & cheese burrito!

  7. Wow, this is a topic that totally affects me. I sometimes don’t eat until 3 in the afternoon. Then, I have a hard time cooking for the family because I’m full and nothing sounds good. When I was pregnant, I managed a piece of bread with cheese melted on it in the toaster oven. One of my personal challenges is to get something in my stomach by 10 these days. Usually it’s dry Cinnamon Life. These suggestions sound good too! Good luck!!

  8. Totally understand. I despise breakfast foods. I’d rather have … actually I’d rather have nothing other than coffee. BUT since I can have oatmeal now - he he - I’ll have that. Lunch is iffy but I love dinner and my before bed snack. I think that is why too I am so large… confuses the body. So… my latest breakfast foods have been the following:

    Sauerkraut (don’t laugh)
    Steamed Caulifolower
A pickle and a piece of cheese
    Ricotta in Celery
    Anything with F.E.T.A.

And concerning liking the food I cook (shiver, shiver) - why is it that everything tastes different when I make it?!?!!?!?!? A chef told me once that sometimes continuous odors mess with your psyche… maybe that’s it? Smelling a food item while cooking it - and then when you go to eat it - it’s overwhelming? Whatever it is - I’m right with you… and I totally understand.

  9. Anything I’ve ever read emphasizes the importance of breakfast. And I think eating more protein than carbs is better for breakfast. Protein for breakfast is what is recommended for overcoming jet lag. It doesn’t have to be considered a “breakfast” food, just eat something. It will help jump start your metabolism. Fasting, which is the same as not eating for several hours, just makes your body want to hang onto whatever calories it gets even more.

BTW, my husband is the same way. It’s hard to get him to eat in the morning. He says that the coffee curbs his appetite, but coffee has never worked that way for me. Rats! I wish it would. :-)

  10. Wow, Kat. Sauerkraut? Pickles? You like strong tastes, eh? LOL

  11. I have done the cauliflower for breakfast because it seemed like something that would not weigh me down. I don’t want something that will sit there like a lump.
When I was preg. the first time, I wanted to do everything by the book, the What to Expect…. book. Well, when I tried the oatmeal loaded with wheat germ and blueberries, my tummy revolted. Now that is all I can think about with oatmeal.
