C25K: Week 2! (Anne)

How did last week go? Did you survive the walking?

This week’s task: 3 days of walking 27 minutes + running/jogging 3.

How are you going to do it? Are you going to run the 3 minutes straight? Will you do it in 30-second intervals?

Woohoo! One week down, and only 15 more in between us and running/jogging for 30 minutes! I signed myself up today for a 5k women’s run on July 29th. Has anyone else signed up for a race?

Last week was good for me! The first day was a little rough, but by the time I walked the 3rd time — it felt more “normal.”

I’m curious to see how I feel run/jogging tomorrow. Ideally, I would like to do 3 x 1 minute intervals, but I may do something like 4 x 30 seconds + 1 x 1 min on the first day, then 1 x 30 sec + 2 x 45 sec + 1 x 1 min on the second day to built up to trying to do 3 x 1 min on the 3rd day.

I actually walked an hour three days last week. I’m kinda excited about adding in the running. I haven’t run since I hurt my knee…so this is gonna be good for me. I think I’m gonna try to do all my at one time.

I only got two days in last week. But it wasn’t for lack of trying, the weather has just been horrible. I tried to do an indoor cardio workout as replacement (30 min walking in place did not interest me) but I think it was only 20 minutes. It was way harder than the walking though!

I am shopping for an inexpensive treadmill or elliptical machine this week.

I am using Robert Ullrey’s Podcast for Running and he breaks the running down in intervals. I did one 60 second interval of running this week and it felt good (not good enough to do again, though!)

How do you find out about 5K’s in your area?

missy —

try to do a search on google for a runner’s club in your nearby area (or in the closest big city) — they typically have lists of races. also, the good running shoe stores typically know what’s going on in the area.

*also as a side note: robert ullrey’s podcast is for a nine-week plan for couch-to-5k…. and we’re on a 16-week plan so use with care — or if the faster ramp up is working for you, go with it!! just make sure to stretch!!!

I, too, only got in two days last week due to bad weather. And I’m also using the Podcast for Running. Very helpful - I don’t have to look at my watch so much.

I’m not signed up for any races, but our town does have a two-mile charity walk in the summer I’ll do. Last year it took me about 33 minutes, and I hope with less weight/better training I’ll do better this year!

Thanks, Anne! I will look into it and update later - gulp!

Right now, I’m using the podcast to keep my walking pace up. Now that I have an idea of where my pace needs to be, though, I’m thinking of making my own music selection so I am not listening to his week one podcast over and over and over.

The first walk I made the mistake of taking the kids. I pushed a double stroller with two kids in it up some monstrous hills. I was in pain the next day. I wanted to chart how far I went in the 27 minutes but my gps died before we made it around the first corner.

The second one I had to do indoors. My “free-time” windows of opportunity were not matching up with the “rain-breaks” outside. I ended up doing a three mile indoor walk instead.

The third one I was able to hit the pavement and this time put fresh batteries in the GPS. I averaged about 3.04 mph (which I thought was great since MOST of it was at a fairly steep incline). When my watch alarm went off I was sill more than half a mile from the house and facing my fourth gigantic hill. I pressed on and ended up doing 43 minutes total. Several times I really wanted to break out into a run but decided to wait until this week for that.

I plan to split up the 3 minutes of jogging with 9 min walk, 1 min run, 9 min walk, 1 min run, 9 min walk, 1 min run.

Well . . . I am too out of shape for running quite yet.

I walk a lot in my day to day life–I now know I average 8000 steps a day. But, running I am not ready for yet. Even just three minutes.

I think I need the 7 month couch-to-5K.

Just letting you know I am bowing out. For now, I am sticking with the Walk Away the Pounds videos and an at home weight lifting DVD.

Maybe after I’ve lost some more weight I can attempt running again.

Blair, talk about upping the intensity! They say to do the same thing when training on a bike. Add the kids to the back for a few rides and when you ride with the extra weight, you will notice you are faster and stronger.
