What are your old standbys?

I know people have shared this before, but I would like to hear what everyone’s current “standbys” are. Those meals or snacks that you eat several times per week; week in and week out. And why. Here are mine (random, I know…)

1. Plain non-fat yogurt with 2 T ground flax seed and stevia to taste. It is so yummy and healthy; I eat it for snack almost every morning.

2. Planter’s Deluxe Mixed Nuts. Easy and healthy and yummy. (I love the fact that they don’t have peanuts.) Almost always my afternoon snack because I can eat ‘em and drive.

3. Raspberry tea with lime and stevia. I love water, but want something that has flavor with lunch and dinner. This is healthier (and tastier) than diet colas. And limes are cheaper right now than lemons :-)
4. Beans. Easy to make in the crock pot and very cheap and healthy. My lunch is usually some leftover meat from dinner the night before and beans. I have grown especially fond of lima beans lately.

What about you?

  1. This may not sound like a standby, but I have 2 pieces of bacon and 2 fried eggs every morning for breakfast.

I don’t usually snack. Hmm.. maybe I should hardboil some eggs…

  2. Hummous and mange tout (snow peas) or celery sticks or peppers for my morning snack.
    Porridge for breakfast.
Evening meal standbys - stir fry with soy sauce and ginger or sort of Thai sauce - tahini (sesame seed paste, which I use instead of peanut because it’s something I always have in the cupboard), green curry paste, ground ginger, soy sauce and a bit of hot water, maybe with light coconut milk too.
Tomato sauce with veg and some sort of meat, like oven baked chicken or grilled pork.
I like trying out new recipes whenever possible. Kalyn’s Kitchen is great for that, or just googling whatever ingredients I’ve got and seeing what I find.

  3. Oatmeal Muffins and Oatmeal Cookies. I gladly forego carbs with meals to have those items.

1 can Pinto Beans, drained and rinsed, mixed with one can Rotel Mexican Festival Tomatoes. I eat that for lunch almost every day. I even get a little irritable if I can’t have it. (what is in those tomatoes?! They’re addictive!!!)

My favorite car snack is an apple.

And asparagus…lots and lots of asparagus.

  4. I eat cottage cheese and oatmeal (strawberry flavored as I’m not fond of plain oatmeal) mixed with water just about every morning.

For snacks, hard boiled egg and nonfat yogurt or I’ve been buying the special K protein bars or the myoplex lite protein bars or myoplex lite protein shakes.

For lunch, I usually have a south beach meal tortilla wrap kit. I really like the frilled chicken caesar and the sesame chicken.

I also like cucumbers with lime and chile powder.

  5. What is flaxseed? Do you use that for taste or is there a health benefit to it?

  6. Flaxseed has LOTS of omega-3’s. I put it in my oatmeal every morning for the (hopefully) cholesterol-lowering effect. It’s kind of nutty (I use a ground meal version). It’s just good fat :)

Blest, I’m thinking about making your muffins and cookies at some point… which do you like better, if you had to choose just one? ;-)

  7. 1. String cheese.

    2. Boiled eggs.

    3. Tomatoes.

  8. Hmmm. I love them both, but the race goes to the muffins. Which are made even more delicious by the addition of a tsp of allspice, by the way.
