Back in the Swing . . . sorta (Stephanie)

Well, we’re almost 8 weeks post-baby, and it’s time to get focused. :) I’ve been lurking around lately, trying to figure out the best way for me to work on losing the baby weight and retrain myself to healthier eating habits. When I started with OWOA last year, pre-pregnancy, I was all set to do Weight Watchers, and am still a HUGE fan of their program, having used it very successfully before having kids. (By that, I mean losing and keeping it off).

However, I’ve spent the last couple weeks looking at our lifestyle and realizing that WW isn’t the plan for me this time round. I have three littles, three and under, and the time it would take me to count points and figure out what the points for a dinner would be … just the thought of that overwhelms me right now. Last night I read the South Beach book, and think that may be the way for me to go. I need to break the hold that breads/carbs have on me, and this looks like a way that I can get by making only one meal and I just omit those parts that aren’t on the plan for me.

Thoughts? I’m feeling a little overwhelmed and half-hearted about this. But, I know, that putting off starting doesn’t get me anywhere so I just need to bite the bullet and start. Right now, I’m just going to be working on food - how to make better cooking choices, figuring out easy lunches for me when the littles are eating other things, and how to do it within our budget. Later, I start adding in exercise and figuring out a plan for that (and it will be easier to do that with the baby is a little bit bigger and goes a little longer between feedings).

  1. Have you looked into the WW “Core” plan?

  2. I have somewhat. When I was doing WW pre-baby, they hadn’t come up with the core plan, so what I know about it is what I’ve been able to put together piece-meal from friend and the internet. I’m not sure I feel completely comfortable trying that without having to pay for the meetings to go and really learn the nuts and bolts of it. And from what I understand it’s fairly similar to phase 2 of south beach, right?

  3. I wish you success at whatever you decide to do. I’ve been doing the WW flex plan for a while and I know a lot of people find that counting points takes too much time/effort. But, that really hasn’t been my experience. However, everyone is different, which is what is so great!

I tried South Beach a couple of years ago and I absolutely hated it because having a list of “off-limits” food was much too frustrating to me and made me feel deprived. I may not eat a cookie for a year, but if you tell me I can’t have it, it seems to be the only thing I think about! Having said that, I really admire people like Blest who have been able to follow SB so loyally.

Ultimately, you know yourself the best. You have to do what will work for you and your lifestyle. Thankfully, there isn’t just one way that works.

Oh, and the core plan is very similar to Phase 2 of South Beach! (But, I’ve never tried it)

  5. I have a three month old and am doing WW. I started with Flex, switched to Core for the same reasons you stated… this is my 6th child and didn’t lose any weight.. i have switched back to Flex and have been losing weight and am not hungry because I just plan my meals in advance for something balanced and that way I don’t waste my points on frivolous things. It isn’t time consuming as long as I don’t feel like I have to log everything into the computer right then. I usually write it down and log it later. I have cereal every morning to make it easier.

  6. Just want to say that I LOVE the Beach! But the truth is, all diets “work.” It’s just really what you can stick to. We have really enjoyed the Beach. And I have tried just about every major diet out there (and lost weight on all of ‘em too.) South Beach is by far my favorite.

  7. Well…you know how I feel about the Beach!  Are you still nursing, though? Cause if so, you need to go straight to phase 2.
