Fridge troubles (Mandi)

Right now my fridge is stocked with all sorts of healthy and nutritious foods and plenty of speciality things that are “just for mommy and daddy” — like my sugar free Jello cups or my lemon juice (I use it for just about everything!) and my Laughing Cow cheese wedges. My problem is that my 3 year old keeps trying to SABOTAGE (I said S-A-B-O-T-A-G-E) my eating plan.  He is constantly getting into the fridge and taking things.  Today he ate about 4 of my Jello cups (at 2.50 a pack I consider these a small indulgence and covenience), he drank BOTH my bottles of lemon juice — I didn’t discover this until I went to make my marinade, he polished off 4 cheese wedges (just ate them plain out of the wrapper!), he stole about 2-3 of my mozzarella cheese sticks and last week he almost single-handedly ate a whole container of hummus. The standard child lock (the one that wraps around the side and door and you press the button to open) no longer keeps him out. He’s had the figured out for months now.  I have tried everything I can think of to keep him out. There has been crying, gnashing of the teeth, temper tantrums, screaming, shouting (and this is just on my part!).  ;o)  Seriously though, if ANYONE has suggestions I would greatly appreciate it!  I’m to the point where I have considered duct tape (and I ain’t talking about the fridge….)

  1. Your own dorm fridge hidden in your bedroom? Joking. :-)

Hmmm, how about snacks that look like yours but are cheaper. And then put them on the lower shelves and in front… and your snacks on top and in the back where they are not easily visible?

  2. I worked with a family a while back who, for various reasons, actually had a cobination padlock and chain on the fridge. Can’t remember exactly how they had it fixed on, but might be worth a try?!

  3. The padlock is our last resort (although it would also keep the older kids out….) lol — I was hoping that someone knew of a childproof gadget that I had not previously heard of. Anita - if I did get cheaper snacks Kaeleb would merely polish those off in a day or two and then he’d be right on to mine. I hid my Jello under all the produce in the vegetable drawer and he STILL found them. He is a sneaky little thing.

  4. Those Laughing Cows are good. I don’t blame him.

  5. We got an oven lock and put it on the top of the refrigerator to hold the door shut. Of course, once he starts pushing a chair over to the fridge, he’ll figure that out too. Anyway, they sell them with other safety stuff. You attach one piece to the top of the fridge and one to the door and then they clip together. One caveat - don’t leave open containers in the fridge because the child yanking on the door to open it will cause spills. :P

  6. Jana - We did have one of those but he knows how to open it. He just pushes the button right in and opens the door.

  7. The one I’m talking about isn’t a button - it’s a two-sided latch that you have to hold both sides of in at the same time or it won’t open. My 5 year old can’t do it.
