Dealing with illness (Tracy)

I had a great day yesterday - starting with my weigh-in (hey, didja notice that I LOST 3 lbs while on vacation? I was the last one writing on the weigh-in post!). We’re in crunch time with all the end of summer activities and start of school (next week) and figuring out who is taking what and when and all that routine stuff.

And then I got sick.

I wasn’t feeling well when I went to bed, nor did I sleep well. I ache all over. I am sniffly, congested, achy, and my throat hurts. I’m fretting a bit too much - is this strep again? I don’t think I can cope with strep AGAIN. (would be the 3rd time since March) Nor can I cope with the thought of an adult tonsilectomy which is the path I’m on if I keep getting strep. But I digress from the main point of this post, which is comfort eating.

I want to eat. I want noodles. I want pasta. I want strawberries. I want 7-UP, and not diet 7-UP either. You know - Comfort eating, because I feel absolutely lousy.

Any ideas how to fill that void? I’m praying, drinking water, trying anything else to distract me that I feel up to. Don’t suggest walking - I’m in pain here with the headache and more, and it’s super hot outside (think 105), and I’m not up to that.

Any other ideas?

  1. Tracy, unless your diet strictly prohibits pasta and strawberries they are excellent for you. Strawberries are FULL of vitamin C and you need that right now. You could even pair pasta with some sauteed veggies and make yourself a spinach and strawberry salad and you have a very healthy meal.

I am praying you feel better soon!!!!!

Wanta know more about pasta and it’s health benefits you can check out www.ilovepasta.org

  2. Oooo… here ya go Tracy… do you have any chicken broth in the house??? I make this for me and the kids at the first sign of illness. I usually boil a chicken and then skim off the broth but you can use a can of broth if you have it. Boil it up and then add some salt, pepper, garlic and a bit of onion. Then I do add pasta to it to boil. What you have is a very healthy and almost medicinal form of chicken soup. It is good for what ails you, that is for sure!!!

  3. I also suggest chicken soup or broth. It is very restorative.

I know what you mean about wanting comfort foods. What about making some of that mock mashed potatoes that someone posted as a recipe (if WW allows it). Or something with plenty of garlic, which I think is good for the immune system.
Or whole wheat pasta, if regular is not on your plan?

    Praying you feel better soon!

  4. I ditto what the other said about chicken broth … and when I need some cold to drink on my sore throat, I do diet ginger ale, and sometimes add a splash of juice (my favorite is cranberry). You can do that with diet sprite or 7-up, too, and even just that little bit of juice makes the flavor taste so good on your throat. (((hugs)))

  5. One of my many “cures-what-ails-ya” recipes is Black Bean Chipotle Soup

Chop up one onion and two or three cloves of garlic

Saute them in a little olive oil. Dump in a 28oz can of diced or crushed tomatoes, a can of Rotel Mexican Fiesta Tomatoes, and a can of green chiles. Add 1/2 tsp of chipotle powder, a tsp of chili powder, and about 1/2 tsp of cumin. Simmer a little while and chow down! It’s loaded with immune boosting ingredients, and very filling and warm and comforting. Plus if you put in enough hot stuff, it’ll clear your sinuses!

    Hang On, Buddy! Hang on!!!

  6. Carbs are not prohibited on my diet, but they’re not good in overload. I did end up making some noodles for myself. And had a strawberry smoothie, which helped a lot.

Feeling some better this evening - hopefully this is a little bug and I’m kicking it! Thanks for the help and listening!
