C25K: Week 6! (Anne)

That’s right, folks. This week’s assignment is 12 minutes running (out of 30 total) — so, if you’re like me and run at a s-l-o-w but steady 5mph pace, this is the dreaded MILE! Hip, hip, hooray!

This past week was a tiny bit rough on my knees, but I ended up being looked at by a sports medicine doctor yesterday and now have brand new, perfect-for-me inserts in my running shoes — and I feel great! I also have lowered the incline when I run; I have been running at a 3-3.5% incline on the treadmill, which could have been exacerbating my issues. Thus I’m back to a 0% incline until I’m fully pain-free.

How about you? Who else is out there and running? Blair, how’s the 27/3 plan and your new (to you) treadmill treating you? Missy, how’s the jogging in place going at Curves? Can you up the intensity? ;-) Bethany, where are you? How’s your running going? Anita, what about you… want to join in on week 1 this week? Tami, how’s your running going? I saw a post of yours that said you were up to 5 miles in 55 min — congrats!! Do you have a distance goal or a race in mind to shoot for? Is anyone else out there running for exercise?

  1. Does running away from responsibilities count?

How about running away from home in general?

    No?

    Drat.

  2. I have been thinking about joining you guys. My hip pain is nearly gone. It still flairs up but it’s not nearly as bad as last fall. I’m just a little concerned about starting too soon. I’ve been walking on the treadmill after biking and it hasn’t been too hard on my hip. Maybe I’ll either a) start running on the treadmill, or b) walk on the street rather than the treadmill and see how it goes. Thanks for remembering me!

My sister-in-law invited us to sign up for a 5k walk/run in their small town in July. We haven’t decided yet if we are going to do it. But it would be a good goal to work towards!

  3. Anita,

Yay! Jump in and join us. If you want to do it a little slower than moving up by 3 minutes at a time — you can move up your minutes running by 2 minutes at a time to see how your hip does. You could jump in to “Phase/Month II” here:http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=27. It’s up to you whether you want to run on the treadmill or the street, but I would think that the treadmill would be initially less impact on your hip. Just my opinion, though!

  4. Anne,
Thanks for asking. I am steady at 5 miles in 55 mins. That’s a steady pace of almost 5.5 miles an hour. My goal is to stay between 5 and 6 miles in an hour not including warm up and cool down. I was planning a 5k the first of April but with all the illnesses around our house the crud from bronchitas lingering in my lungs, I decided not to. I now have met my goal for that race though…3 miles in 33 minutes. I would like to do a 10k still this year (but will definitely wait until the fall when it is cooler and then I would like to finish up the fall and winter training for a 1/2 marathon next April. You know, people have told me for the last little bit “I’m so glad you like running. I just can’t do it” Well, until recently I HATED running but now I prefer it to walking. It feels so good! Anyhootems, I had better get to knitting! Must finish Emma’s sweater…Must finish Emma’s sweater.

  5. Blest, how fast? It might count, hehe!

Anita, yea! The street has been tough on me, but the last time I ran was in dirt and I was only 12. I tried a treadmill this weekend and it felt good!

Tami - WOW! I am starting to like the feeling that running gives me, but I couldn’t say I love it yet :)

Anne, keep up the good work. No pressure, but I am following your example, Sis ;) And you are so sweet to put me on the spot! That’s okay - ’cause I am very happy with where this is going. I did 3 workouts at Curves Mon., Tues, and Thurs. adding a fourth lap on Thursday - so I did 9 minutes of running! I got sent out of town as a Mommy treat - but I used a friend’s treadmill Saturday morning and did 6 minutes running in 3 intervals. It felt much better than running on pavement - ugh! Maybe I should get better shoes and inserts?

I plan on continuing with the 4-lap Curves this week to get in 9 minutes for 3 days and continue walking on the others.

Best of luck to everyone in whatever your goals are!

  6. Missy — YES!! Please, please get yourself to a dedicated running-shoe store and get properly fitted for shoes and inserts — it makes all the difference in the world!

  8. Char — I sent you an email. As long as you’re up to walking (at a good clip!) 30 minutes at a time, 3 times a week and you’ve maintained that for at least 2 straight weeks, welcome aboard! (That goes for anyone else thinking about joining in… your body needs to be ready! We don’t want any unnecessary injuries, ok? ;-) )

  9. Anne, I just noticed in the title that we are starting our SIXTH week!! Have I really been exercising for six weeks?

Has anyone seen any flying pigs?

  12. Ok - I posted a big ole’ long comment to this and it’s gone…hmmm.

Anyway. I broke the 15 minute mile last Friday and I was thrilled with that since I don’t move as fast as I once did. I’m up to 5 minutes running (at least 6.0 mph) - of course this isn’t five minutes lumped together - I split it up over the 30 minutes. I’m hoping to add a sixth minute by the end of this week. I know I’m behind you gals but I’m moving at a pace that my ankles and knees are more comfortable with:)

Thanks for asking about me Anne - you’re a doll and you’re doing sooooo awesome!!
